Notes: Abstract Acute haemorrhagic lesions in the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum (‘stress ulcers’) occur relatively often under clinical conditions and are always dangerous to the patient (lethality rate about 70%). Since conservative and surgical treatment are without significant success up to now, prevention by adaptation to stressors or by administration of drugs seems mandatory. An improved technique for producing acute gastric lesions in rats by immobilization and a new method for assessing this disease in the animals is presented in this communication. High precision is obtained within a single experimental series especially from day to day. Since histamine was suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of stress ulcer disease, (+)-catechin, a rather specific inhibitor of specific histidine decarboxylase from rat stomach, was tested in immobilized rats. It prevented the formation of acute gastric lesions by 80% in seven series of experiments lasting for half a year. Since the drug has low toxicity in man, it is recommended for clinical trials.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary These preliminary results indicate that Kawa pyrones, especially kawain, are potent anti-inflammatory and antipyretic compounds. Edema induced in the rat's paw by subplantar injection of formalin, serotonin, carrageenin or dextran were inhibited in most cases more intensely than by phenylbutazone or aminopyrin. The potency in preventing yeast-induced fever was similar to that of phenylbutazone, while fever induced by bacterial pyrogen was less affected. The data on combined administration of kawain with phenylbutazone in carrageenin-induced edema indicate that the anti-inflammatory effects of the two drugs are predominantly additive, while the lethal effects are less than additive, thus giving a somewhat higher margin of safety.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Kawa pyrones are the pharmacologically active constituents of the kawa root (Piper methysticum Forst). The spectrum of central nervous activity of these compounds has been found to be closely related to that of centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxants of the mephenesin type: Ascending paralysis with ataxia and loss of postural and righting reflexes without loss of consciousness, abolition of the tonic extensor component of experimentally induced convulsions, blockade of spinal and supraspinal polysynaptic reflexes while monosynaptic arcs were totally resistant. The tonic stretch reflex in the unanesthetized animal has been shown to be very sensitive to the depressant action of kawa pyrones, the action of which was three times stronger than that of mephenesin. Kawa pyrones left EEG arousal from stimulation of the reticular activating system unimpaired and had only little effect on the spontaneous cerebral cortex electrical activity.

Notes: Summary The bromide-82 dilution space (extracellular space, ECS) and blood volume (BV) were measured in 21 patients with esophageal and gastric cancer and in 27 patients 18–96 months after total gastrectomy. Resistance (R) and reactance (Xc) from bioelectrical impedance measurements were used to obtain multiple regression equations for ECS and BV. The variables weight, gender, and height 2/Xc were independent predictors of ECS (r = 0.767; P 〈 0.0001). Height 2/R and gender were predictors of blood volume (r = 0.856; P 〈 0.0001). The mean difference between the Br space and the ECS predicted from impedance measurements was 0 ± 1.54 (mean ± SD). The limits of agreement (± 2 SD) were therefore ±3.081 or 19.6% of the mean Br space of 15.71. The limits of agreement for BV were ±789 ml or ±19.7% of the average BV of 4008 ml. It is concluded that bioelectrical impedance plethysmography using a single frequency can be used for the estimation of ECS and BV The wide limits of agreement, however, may limit its used in clinical practice.

Notes: In a molecular beam experiment the chemiluminescence M+X2 → MX*+X in the reactive scattering of strontium atoms and halogen molecules Cl2 and Br2 has been studied below 4 eV collision energy. Relative integral reactive cross sections as a function of collision energy reveal large activation energies. Dynamical aspects of endothermic reactions are discussed. A simple kinematic transformation yields a classical limit for the rotational excitation of the product molecule.
