    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Ionenes with the formula {[NMe2(CH2)5NMe2(CH2) n ]2I}p (where Me=methyl group;n=3, 4, 5; andp the degree of polymerization) have been prepared. Their NMR and IR spectra are shown and discussed. When these compounds are associated with silver iodide they give conducting compounds which obey the Arrhenius law. The highest conductivity of the AgI−N-pentylene, N′-alkylene, N, N, N′, N′-tetramethyl diammonium polyiodide system, at 25°C, is 0.01 Ω cm−1, corresponding to a compound containing 80% of AgI equivalent. This study has been carried out with the purpose of achieving solid generators.
    Notes: Résumé Les ionènes de formule {[NMe2(CH2)5NMe2(CH2) n ]2I}p (avec Me=radical méthyl;n=3, 4, 5; etp le degré de polymérization) ont été préparés. Leur spectre RMN et IR est présenté et discuté. Associés à de l'iodure d'argent, ils donnent des composés conducteurs qui suivent la loi d'Arrhénius. Le système AgI-polydiiodure de N pentylène N′ propyléne tétraméthyl N, N, N′, N′ diammonium possède à 25°C une conductivité maximale de 0.01 Ω cm−1 pour une composition renfermant 80% en équivalent de AgI. Cette étude se place dans une perspective de mise au point de générateurs tout solide.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Morphin und Codein wurde mittels C18-Säulenextrak-ktion isoliert und mit Pentafluorpropionsäureanhydrid (PFPA) derivatisiert. Die PFPA-Derivate wurden gaschromatographisch und massenspektrometrisch untersucht und hinsichtlich ihrer optimalen Nachweismöglichkeit verglichen. Aufgrund unserer Untersuchungsergebnisse ist die C18-Säulenex-traktion in Kombination mit der negativ-chemischen-Ionisation (NCI) besonders zum Nachweis von derivatisiertem Codein und Morphin geeignet. Die Bestimmungsgrenze liegt derzeit bei etwa 2 bis 5 μg Morphin oder Codein pro Liter Blut.
    Notes: Summary Morphine and codeine were isolated from blood with C18 Bond Elut columns and derivatised with pentafluoropropionic anhydride (PFPA). The PFPA-derivatives were examined by means of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry using electron impact and chemical ionisation (positive and negative mode). The negative chemical ionisation, as most sensitive, was applied for the quantitation of both examined substances in forensic blood samples.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Tierexperimentelle Untersuchungen mit der transvenösen Katheter-Elektrode MIP 2000 bei insgesamt 20 Hunden (Verweildauer der Elektroden zwischen 1 und 12 Wochen) ergaben, daß durch den dargestellten Mechanismus der Elektrode der Elektrodenkopf am Myokard fest verankert war. Eine überschießende Bindegewebsreaktion durch „Ausfahren” von 4 Kunststoffborsten in das Myokard findet nicht statt, ebenso bewirkt der Mechanismus der Elektrode keine erhöhte Reizschwelle.
    Notes: Summary Experimental investigations with the transvenous catheter electrode MIP 2000 (the electrodes remained inserted from 1 to 12 weeks) on 20 dogs proved the tight fastening of the electrode point to the myocardium by the outlined mechanism. There is neither an excessive reaction of the connective tissue by the “intrusion” of the 4 plastic bristles into the myocardium nor does the electrode mechanism produce an elevated stimulus threshold.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Das Verhalten glatter Muskelzellen unter experimenteller Hypertonie, Hypercholesterinämie und Transplantation wird untersucht und verglichen. Glatte Muskelzellen können sich in Abhängigkeit von den experimentellen Bedingungen transformieren und die charakteristischen morphologischen Merkmale glatter Muskelzellen weitgehend verlieren. Es wird aufgezeigt, daß die in pathologisch veränderten Gefäßarealen anzutreffenden Zellen von glatten Muskelzellen abstammen.
    Notes: Summary Morphologic studies with the electron microscope were undertaken to point out the role of smooth muscle cells in experimental hypertension, hypercholesterinemia, and transplantation. Fine structural alterations are described and compared. It is shown that smooth muscle cells are able to transform under experimental conditions by loss of their characteristic morphological features. It is assumed that smooth muscle cells play an important role in the formation of pathologic intimal thickenings by migration into the subendothelial space and producing intercellular substances such as acid mucopolysaccharides, collagen and elastic. The smooth muscle cell is also considered to be capable of conversion into foam cell during lipid accumulation in the arterial wall following hypercholesterinemia. Smooth muscle cells are also important in the reparation of alterations in aortic grafts and hosts caused by ischemic and immunological reactions.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die submikroskopische Morphologie des Glomus caroticum der Katze wird beschrieben. Zur Anwendung kamen zwei Fixationsmedien: 1.5%iges Glutaraldehyd in 1/15 m Sørensen-Puffer (pH 7,35; 520 Milliosmol) und 2.1%ige Osmiumsäure in 0,1m s-CollidinPuffer (pH 7,35; 310 Milliosmol). Ein Vergleich der Strukturen nach Behandlung mit den beiden Mitteln ergibt erhebliche Differenzen, die in einer Entleerung der osmiophilen Bläschen, Eluation der Gewebsmatrix und der Anwesenheit von inocytosebläschen an den Hüllzell- und Endothelmembranen nach Osmiumsäurefixation (s-Collidin-gepuffert) bestehen. Nach Fixation in Glutaraldehyd (in Sørensen-Puffer) sind diese Erscheinungen nicht vorhanden, hingegen stellen sich die osmiophilen Bläschen immer gefüllt dar. Sie sind auch in Nervenendigungen und in den präterminalen Nervenfasern zu finden. Nach Iversen (1967a, b) enthalten die osmiophilen Bläschen wahrscheinlich ATP und Katecholamine im molaren Verhältnis von 1∶4. Zur Aktivierung von ATP bei einer hypoxischen Stoffwechsellage ist ein Einstrom von Ca2+ Ionen notwendig, die das Membranpotential der Chemorezeptorzellen verändern. Es wird ein Innervationsmechanismus aufgrund dieser Elektrolytverschiebung diskutiert.
    Notes: Summary Ultrastructure of the cat carotid body was studied after fixation in either 1.5% glutaraldehyde in 1/15 Sørensen buffer (pH 7.35; 520 milliosmol), or 2.1% osmium tetroxide in 0.1 M s-collidine buffer. After fixation in osmium tetroxide, the content of osmiophilic granules was depleted, elution of the tissue matrix was observed, and pinocytotic vesicles appeared at covering and endothelial cell membranes. After fixation in glutaraldehyde, these characteristics were not observed and osmiophilic granules were always filled. Osmiophilic granules were also present in nerve endings and preterminal nerve fibers. According to Iversen (1967a, b), the osmiophilic granules probably contain ATP and catecholamines in a 1∶4 molar ratio. To activate ATP in hypoxic states, it appears that Ca2+ ions must diffuse into the chemoreceptor cells to alter their membrane potential. The resulting electrolytic changes appear to be related to carotid body excitation.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Gefäße der zwischen Aorta ascendens und Truncus pulmonalis, an der Vorder- und Hinterwand des Truncus pulmonalis gelegenen Glomera, sowie das sogenannte „Glomus pulmonale“ der Katze lassen sich von den Coronararterien aus durch Tusche-Gelatine-Lösungen füllen. Die erwähnten Paraganglien sind als Chemoreceptorenfelder dem Coronarkreislauf angeschlossen und daher als Glomera coronaria zu bezeichnen. Licht- und elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchungen ergaben eine morphologische Übereinstimmung mit dem Glomus caroticum. Vagusdurchtrennungen verursachen eine Degeneration der an den Glomuszellen gelegenen synaptischen Formationen sowie Veränderungen in Glomuszellen.
    Notes: Summary The vessels of the glomera that lie between the aorta and the pulmonary trunk, on the anterior and posterior wall of the pulmonary trunk, as well as the so-called glomus pulmonale of the cat have been injected with gelatine-india ink mixture. The paraganglia mentioned above are associated with the coronary circulation as chemoreceptors and are designated as the glomera coronaria. The investigations demonstrate a morphologic similarity with the glomus caroticum. Section of the vagus causes a degeneration of the synaptic structures on the glomus cells as well as changes in the cells themselves.

    Notes: Summary The immunogold technique, employing antisera with clear-cut specificities, was used to localise different processing stages of pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) in rabbit melanotropic cells. While the antiserum against γ 3-MSH labelled all the secretory granules including intrasaccular condensations in the Golgi apparatus, antisera against α-MSH only labelled extra-Golgi secretory vesicles (SV). All extra-Golgi SV were likewise labelled with the three antisera against α-MSH used, despite their different specificities for the desacetylated, N-acetylated or C-amidated forms of the peptide. The antibody against β-endorphin also labelled the extra-Golgi SV, while only some SV were labelled with the antibody against γ-endorphin. These results correlate with biochemical data in favour of mainly — if not exclusively — intragranular processing of POMC. Except for γ3-MSH, the cleavage of which could coincide with Golgi packaging of secretory material, other post-translational modifications of the precursor seem to occur when SV are discharged outside the Golgi area. The cleavage of γ-endorphin appears to be a later step in POMC processing, occurring in some mature SV.
