Notes: Abstract We present a patient with vertebrobasilar insufficiency, with vertigo and horizontal nystagmus, induced by turning the head to the right. Angiography demonstrated transient occlusion of the left vertebral artery at the atlantoaxial joint during rotation of the head. The pathogenesis and angiographic findings are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was applied to the detection of IgG and IgM antibodies against outer membrane vesicles (OMV) antigen ofHaemophilus influenzae type b. In this ELISA system, IgG antibody titers were about 40 fold higher than those in indirect hemagglutination assay (IHA). The IgG antibody titers by this ELISA of rabbit sera obtained after immunization were comparable with those by radioimmunoassay (RIA) of the same sera. A significant correlation was established between these two assays (r=0.973,P〈0.001).

Notes: Summary An ultrasound scan revealed an ovarian cyst in the fetal lower abdomen at 29 weeks of gestation. Repeated examinations demonstrated that the cyst increased in size to 6.5 cm×6.1 cm×5.0 cm at 33 weeks of gestation, and the cyst showed no complications between 29 weeks of gestation and early infancy. The female infant was vaginally delivered at 41 weeks of gestation without any complications. Transabdominal needle aspiration of the cyst fluid was performed on the 14th day after birth. The concentrations of estrone, estradiol, estriol, and progesterone in the cyst fluid were almost the same as those in the infant’s serum, while the concentration of pregnenolone was six times that in the infant’s serum. Cytology of the cyst fluid was negative. The cyst thus seems to have been a non-functioning simple cyst of ovarian origin. Follow-up until the baby was one year old showed no recurrence of the cyst.

    Topics: Medicine
Notes: Summary The effectiveness of calcium antagonists on a chronic cerebral vasospasm after an SAH is still under debate. Calcium channel blockers such as nimodipine, nefedipine etc. can dilate spastic arteries by intrathecal administration, but not by systemic (iv or po) use. HA 1077 is a novel and potent calcium antagonist vasodilator which is considered to act by employing different mechanisms from the usual calcium channel blockers since it inhibits 1. calcium ionophore A 23187 induced contraction in arterial strips and 2. phenylephrine induced contraction in calcium free media, suggesting that its site of action is in the intracellular space. HA 1077 is water soluble and relatively stable in light. In the present study, the efficacy of HA 1077 was evaluated on dogs by using the spiral arterial strips in vitro and by angiography in vivo. In the arterial strips from the control dogs, a 50% relaxation of KCl (15 mM) induced contraction was obtained by a 10−6 M HA 1077 for the “intracranial” basilar and middle cerebral arteries, while a 10−5 M was needed to obtain the same effect for the “extracranial” common carotid and vertebral arteries, indicating that HA 1077 is more effective for the intracranial arteries. A vasospasm was produced by the “two haemorrhage” model of Varsoset al. The average angiographic diameter of the basilar artery was reduced to 60% of the control on SAH day 7. Intravenous infusion of HA 1077 (0.5–3 mg/kg/30 min) significantly dilated the spastic basilar artery (up to 20–30%), for over 2 hours. A fall in the systemic BP remained less than 20% during this time. Such spasmolytic effects by intravenous administration could not have been obtained with the usual calcium channel blockers. HA 1077 may be suitable for the treatment of a vasospasm in humans as well.

Notes: Summary Plastid DNA (ptDNA) in albino rice plants regenerated from pollen by anther culture was investigated by Southern blotting. Of the 20 albino plants investigated, 7 contained ptDNA that had suffered large-scale deletion. The size and location of the deletions differed among the plants. In all cases about 30 kbp of the region containing the PstI-2 fragment (15.7 kbp) had been retained. The deleted ptDNA molecules were retained in calluses derived from the roots of each albino plant.

Notes: Summary Somatic hybrid cell lines were constructed by the fusion of protoplasts isolated from cell suspensions of Zea mays L. (maize, 2n = 20) and Triticum sect, trititrigia MacKey (trititrigia, 2n = 35), a perennial hybrid of T. durum Desf. and Elytrigia intermedium (Host) Nevski. Iodoacetamide-inactivated protoplasts of maize were fused with trititrigia protoplasts, which were sensitive to the PEG/DMSO fusion treatment at high pH and high calcium. Based on physiological complementation, approximately 0.002% of the total protoplasts cultured following fusion treatment developed into cell colonies, and 79 lines of them, almost a half, were singled out and subcultured. Among the subcultured lines three were, in comparison with the parents, identified as somatic hybrids by their coupled XbaI restriction patterns of total DNAs probed with the ribosomal DNA of rice. Southern analysis of the digested total DNAs with a mitochondrial gene, atpA., from pea, or a chloroplast gene, trnK, from rice, revealed that all the hybrids carried only the organellar DNAs of trititrigia, which excluded the possibilities of a chimeric callus or any DNA contamination. Cytogenetically, one hybrid was mixoploid with a 2n of 46–67 in which chromosomal endoreduplication, characterized by the appearance of diplochromosomes, was occasionally observed. Its hybridity was reconfirmed by the fact that it bore the satellite chromosomes of both maize and trititrigia, which were distinguishable from each other by size. In contrast, the other two hybrids were aneuploids. The potential of gene transfer between Zea and Triticum species was thus conclusively established.

Notes: Summary Since mucosal colonization may be an important determinant in the pathogenesis of otitis media with effusion (OME), we studied the adherence of Haemophilus influenzae (HI) to human nasal, nasopharyngeal, and buccal mucosal cells obtained from patients with OME. Non-typeable HI adhered in significantly greater numbers than type b HI. HI bacteria adhered to both nasal and nasopharyngeal mucosal cells in significantly greater numbers than to buccal ones. Non-typeable HI adhered to the epithelial cells from children with chronic sinusitis in more significant numbers than did those from children without chronic sinusitis. These results indicate that non-typeable HI adhere more readily to epithelial cells and that the nasal and nasopharyngeal mucosa may be an important route for HI infection in OME.

Notes: Summary The adherence to and the absorption from nasal mucosal epithelium of type b and non-typeable strains of Hemophilus influenzae were studied in guinea pigs. H. influenzae bacteria were administered to the nose as 4×107 organisms in 1.0 ml saline. The outer membrane vesicles (OMV) of H. influenzae were used in the absorption study. Scanning electron microscopic studies showed that H. influenzae cells attached to both ciliated and non-ciliated cells of the nasal mucosa. Histological studies showed that OMV were absorbed through the nasal mucosa, mainly from ciliated cells. Further, penetration of OMV through the nasal mucosa of immunized animals was reduced when compared with that of non-immunized ones.

Notes: Abstract We report 6 cases of central serous choroidopathy (including pigment epithelial detachment in one case) which appeared in the course of systemic corticosteroid administration conducted to cure concurrent general diseases, and in one patient with a steroidreleasing pituitary adenoma. The majority of cases arose within about one month following the administration of more than 200 mg of prednisolon. It is postulated that corticosteroids operate as a kind of stress intervening in the hypophysis-adrenal system, leading eventually to the development of central serous choroidopathy.
