Notes: The electrical conductivity measured parallel and perpendicular to the layer planes of p-type GeSe single crystals was found to be anisotropic at low temperatures. Additionally, an irreversible increase of the conductivity parallel to the layer planes was observed at high voltages. This anisotropy is correlated to the stacking disorder of the crystal layers and to dislocation sets lying on the layers. Extended planar faults parallel to the crystallographic c axis are attributed to the conductivity switching observed perpendicular to this axis. The ratio σ(parallel)/σ⊥ obeys an exponential law, with an activation energy ΔE of about 25 meV. This effect seems to be the predominant one while the switching effect is of minor importance even in the low-temperature range.

Notes: Extended twinning bands with their walls oriented parallel to the c axis of layered GeSe crystals seem to influence considerably the electrical conductivity of this material at low temperatures. The ratio σ(parallel)/σ⊥ of the conductivities on the layer plane measured parallel and normal to the twinning bands is thermally activated. This behavior leads to a value for the barrier height h of 18 meV. On the other hand, ac measurements in the same directions clearly show that the conductivity anisotropy vanishes at higher frequencies, thus permitting a rough estimation of the effective thickness of the walls.

Notes: Abstract This paper reports a study of the influence of CO2 partial pressure and the cation of the supporting electrolyte on the electrochemical reduction of CO2 at copper electrodes in aqueous solution at 25°C. Both current efficiency (CE) and the rates of formation of the reduction products diminish linearly with decreasing CO2 pressure, while evolution of hydrogen increases. The product distribution was greatly influenced by the supporting electrolyte cation. The CE for the formation of C2H4 increased with cation in the order Cs+≈ K+ 〉 Na+ 〉 Li+, apparently in a manner related to the size of the cation radius. The non-metallic cation NH+ 4 allowed only hydrogen evolution with a CE of about 92%.

Notes: Summary The Corinth Canal crosses the isthmus of Corinth and is of great importance for Mediterranean navigation as well as the railroad and highway connections between southern and central Greece. In the century-long history of the Canal, the slopes have shown only minor stability problems despite their significant length, very steep inclination and, more importantly, the strong earthquakes that have frequently shaken the Corinth area. This type of unsual behaviour has motivated research into the mechanical behaviour of the bluish grey marl which is the main geological formation in the Canal area. Geotechnical investigation of the Corinth Canal marl was performed with an extensive laboratory testing programme on high quality undisturbed samples of the intact marl. The material was shown to exhibit brittle behaviour, high stiffness and significant apparent cohesion at low and moderate stress levels. These characteristics indicate that the material possesses significant structural bonding which is believed to be due to cementation between individual particles, caused by the deposition of carbonates at the time of material genesis. With stressing, the material yields due to a gradual bond degradation. The locus of the initial yield points (yield surface) seems to be an ellipse oriented along the isotropic axis. The testing programme was supplemented with a series of tests on the de-structured marl obtained by thorough remoulding. These tests showed a significant difference in the pre-yield stiffness and the peak strength at low stress levels, but comparable post-rupture shear strengths.
