Notes: A digitizer was developed based on the operating principle of electromagnetic induction phenomenon and using high permeability amorphous wires as magnetic cores. The cordless advantage was realized by using a permanent magnet in the stylus pen. A high working height and high resolution of the stylus pen were achieved.

Notes: Spatial and temporal patterns of redd construction by Sakhalin taimen, Hucho perryi, were studied in small streams on northern Hokkaido, Japan. Spawning took place in late April with close relation to discharge patterns. Observed redd size (mean ± 95% C.I.) was 145 ± 11·8 cm in length and 84 ± 5·8 cm in width. The number of egg pockets per redd was either one or two, which is fewer than that of other salmonids reported in the literature. Spawning ground distributions in 1991 and 1992 were similar to each other in terms of the distribution mean and dispersion of the redds. Unlike other salmonids Sakhalin taimen probably constructed multiple redds during one spawning season.

Notes: Summary Cyclopentenone prostaglandins (PGs) such as Δ12-PGJ2 and PGA are potent inducers of growth inhibition in a variety of cultured cells, including epidermal cells. These PGs are actively transported into cells by a specific carrier on cell membrane and accumulate in cell nuclei with binding to nuclear protein. To clarify the mechanism of cytotoxicity of these PGs in epidermal cells, we examined the effects of Δ12-PGJ2 on protein synthesis and cytoskeleton in the PAM 212 transformed mouse epidermal cell line. Cycloheximide at 1 Μg/ml culture medium exhibited a protective effect on cell growth inhibition of PAM 212 cells by Δ12-PGJ2. The analysis of cell lysate protein patterns by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed that 12-h incubation with Δ12-PGJ2 increased the amount of 70 kD protein in PAM 212 cells. The amount of 70 kD protein in Δ12-PGJ2-treated cells was markedly decreased by cotreatment with cycloheximide. This 70 kD protein was also induced in PAM 212 cells with treatment at 43

Notes: Summary Effects of antineoplastic prostaglandins (PG) on human ovarian cancer cell growth were examined by using HR cells derived from ascites of a patient with serous cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary. With regard to inhibition of cancer cell proliferation in vitro, the effects of Δ7-PGA was most marked, followed by that of Δ12-PGJ2, PGJ2 and PGD2. When antineoplastic prostaglandins were administered to nude mice bearing HR cells, tumor growth in groups treated with PGJ2 and Δ12-PGJ2 alone was significantly inhibited 63 days after tumor inoculation, compared to that in an untreated group. Consequently, a significant prolongation of median survival was obtained with Δ12-PGJ2, compared to that in untreated groups and in groups with cisplatin alone. In addition, when prostaglandins were administered together with cisplatin, adjuvant inhibitory effects on the tumor growth were obtained 35, 56 and 63 days after tumor inoculation. Subsequently a significant prolongation of median survival was observed when cisplatin was combined with PGD2 or Δ7-PGJ1, compared to the results in groups treated with PGD2 alone, Δ7-PGJ1 alone or cisplatin alone. Combination of PGJ2 or Δ12-PGJ2 and cisplatin resulted in a significant decrease of hematocrit and body weight 63 days after tumor inoculation, suggesting a deterioration of the median survival. These results suggest that combination of PGD2 or Δ7-PGJ1 with cisplatin may be of clinical use for ovarian cancer resistant to cisplatin.

Notes: Abstract A complete description of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on the finite Sierpinski gasket is presented. We then demonstrate highly oscillatory behaviours of the distribution function of the eigenvalues, the integrated density of states (for the infinite gasket) and the spectrum of the Laplacian on the infinite gasket. The method has two ingredients: the decimation method in calculating eigenvalues due to Rammal and Toulouse and a simple description of the Dirichlet form associated with the Laplacian.

Notes: Summary A case of recurrent extradural cavernous hemangioma is presented. In contrast to secondary extension of a vertebral hemangioma to the epidural space, pure epidural hemangioma is rare. The location of this case was at the level of the 7th thoracic vertebra, and the tumor showed unusual dumbbell-like growth through an intervertebral foramen. The rarity of these lesions, as well as their clinical and radiological features, the diagnostic procedure, and the treatment are discussed.

Notes: Summary We examined the DNA in two families with ornithine transcarbamoylase (OTC) deficiency. Two point mutations of the OTC gene, a C-to-T (codon 141) and a G-to-A (codon 141), were identified. This allowed prenatal monitoring to be made for two fetuses in each family, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), followed by allele-specific oligonucleotide hybridization orTaqI digestion of amplified sequence. The diagnoses showed heterozygotes of a wild type gene and the corresponding mutant gene in these fetuses; each was confirmed postnatally.

Notes: Abstract A rapid and simple radioactivity determination method has been developed for food and related environmental samples of a radioactivity level corresponding to 5 mrem/y, Japan AEC's guideline, by pretreating with a modified microwave dehydration apparatus followed by radiation counting. An equation to estimate the heating conditions by the apparatus has been derived, and results calculated by the equation are in good agreement with experimental data. It took less than 4.5 hours to dehydrate by the propossed method, and radiation counting could be started on the day of sampling and dehydration procedure. The lower limit of detection for each radionuclide by the proposed method, using a Ge(Li) detector of 20% relative efficiency, is lower than one half of the needed detection limit to determine and evaluate the 5 mrem/y level. Radionuclide levels in food samples such as vegetables and crustaceans were determined by the proposed method and it was found that they were below the lower dection limit of the proposed method except natural radionuclide40K and fallout-originated137Cs.
