Notes: Amorphous CoFe2O4 with metal ions coordinated in a manner similar to the spinal crystal was prepared by the ion-beam sputter deposition method. The study of magnetic properties was carried out by dc- and ac-susceptibility measurements and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The strong spin-freezing behavior was observed in 80-Hz, 1-Oe ac susceptibility at two spin-freezing temperatures: 284 K (Tf1), which is considered to be caused by a random anisotropy of Co ions coordinated in distorted octahedral sites, and 86 K (Tf2), which might be caused by the frustration of antiferromagnetic interactions due to the amorphous structure. The dc susceptibility showed irreversibility below Tf1 which decreased with increasing applied field. However, a distinct change was not observed at Tf2. The Mössbauer spectrum revealed that some of the paramagnetic Fe ions were frozen below Tf1, with relaxation phenomena, and that the residual paramagnetic ions were frozen at Tf2. The time decay of the thermoremanent magnetization observed below Tf1 showed different behavior compared to that above and below Tf2.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer measurements, in conjunction with magnetisation and susceptibility studies, show that in Fe2TiO5, and other insulating spin glasses, spin freezing occurs via cluster formation where spin glass phase diagram transitions occur not for individual spins but for groups of correlated spins (clusters) whose effective spins' longitudinal and transverse (or vice versa) components successively freeze.

Notes: Abstract Fe-sitting sites and the origin of magnetic order in YBa2(Cu0.95Fe0.05)3O7−δ have been studied by comparing the Mössbauer spectra observed before and after heat-treatments at 300°C in vacuum. Both of the major quadrupole doublets D-1 and D-2 are assigned to originate from Fe’s replacing Cu1’s. It is also suggested that fluctuations of Cu2 spins play an important role for inducing the magnetic order.

Notes: Abstract Magnetic states of Cu1 sublattice in YBa2Cu3O y : 1%57Fe compounds with 6.09 ≤y≤6.98 were investigated by57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy at 1.68≤T≤300 K. It has been found that, upon reducingy, the magnetic transition temperatureT ml changes from 3.3 to 12 K aroundy≃6.4 where the superconductivity disappears. The magnetic phase diagram for the Cu1 sublattice is plotted.

Notes: Summary The response of adenylate cyclase to GTP and to dopamine (DA) was investigated in striatal membranes from desipramine (DMI)-treated rats (10mg/kg, b.i.d., for 5 days). GPT exerted the same biphasic effect on basal and DA-stimulated enzyme activity in membranes from DMI-treated rats as on saline-treated rats. Rats were injected intraventricularly once with islet activating protein (IAP), pertussis toxin, and given extended treatment with DMI in order to study the effects on the inhibitory GTP-binding protein (Gi). Gi loses its function as a signal transducer on being ADP-ribosylated selectively by the IAP. D2 inhibition of adenylate cyclase by DA was attenuated by the IAP treatment in both DMI- and saline-treated rats; peak levels of DA plus GTP stimulation shifted from 1 μM to 100 μM GTP. D1 stimulation of adenylate cyclase by DA was also attenuated by the IAP in the DMI-treated rats. Since long-term treatment with DMI (15mg/kg, once a day, for 3 weeks) resulted in suppression of D1 stimulation similar to that seen in the present findings, uncoupling between D2 receptors and Gi due to IAP treatment might accelerate DMI-induced adaptive changes of dual control of adenylate cyclase system by DA.

Notes: Abstract Phase separation in external fields has attracted much attention recently. The reason is twofold. Since kinetics of phase separation and morphology of growing domains can be controlled by external fields, it is of technological importance. The other is that existence of mesoscale domains causes curious dynamical properties in fields, which provides us with a fundamental statistical dynamic problem. One example is a phase separation of binary fluids under shear flow. Phase-separated domains are deformed under the field, which causes burst, fusion, and reconnection of domains so that extra energy dissipation occurs in these processes. Because of this large deformation of domains, the system exhibits quite unusual rheological behavior. The kinetics of phase separation of binary fluids is also influenced by an external electric field when the new phases have different dielectric constants. Deformation and interaction of domains in an electric field are investigated by means of an interfacial approach.

Notes: Abstract In order to clarify the direction of the easy axis of Co2B, we examined Co2B doped with 1 at %57Fe using Mössbauer spectroscopy. In the temperature range 4.2 K≤T≤r.t., two well resolved six-line patterns having equal intensity were observed. This shows that the easy axis lies in the c plane. The displacement of magnetically split absorption lines by quadrupole interaction also supports this conclusion. In the temperature region between 4.2 K and 1.6 K, the direction of the easy axis seems to begin to deviate from the c plane.

Notes: Abstract The experimental results obtained for various kinds of random mixtures with competing magnetic anisotropies are reviewed. We show that the nature of the phase transitions and the properties of the ordered phases in competing anisotropy systems are much different from those in pure systems.

Notes: Abstract Melanosomes from bovine eyes have been studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction as a function of temperature and of degree of hydration. The partially disordered structure of melanin is not modified by the interaction with the proteic matrix. The obtained values of 〈u2〉 indicate that high water contents stabilize the melanin structure, decreasing the amplitude of the atomic displacements.
