Notes: The powder-in-tube method using an Ag sheath is applied to achieve high current capacity in the tapes of Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (BPSCCO) with the high-Tc phase (Tc=110 K), by a combination process of cold working and sintering. Two kinds of the BPSCCO powder with and without Ag doping are used as the materials for tape fabrication. The morphology, structure, and critical current density Jc are investigated on the tapes by x-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, scanning electron microscope, magnetic susceptibility, and I-V curves. The optimum sintering conditions to obtain a maximum in the value of Jc at 77 K and 0 T are presented in the Ag-doped tapes and the nondoped ones. An improvement in the Jc vs B properties up to 1 T at 77 K is presented in the BPSCCO tape by Ag doping. The Ag doping causes neither change in the value of Tc (=110 K) nor decomposition of the high-Tc phase.

Notes: Interdiffusion and interfacial reaction between a sputter-deposited YBa2Cu3Ox thin film and substrates (MgO, sapphire, quartz, and Si) have been investigated by 2.7 MeV 4He+ Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. The diffusivities of Cu in the substrates and of the substrate elements (Mg, Al, and Si) in the Y-Ba-Cu-O thin films have been determined over the annealing temperature range from 876 to 1226 K in an oxygen atmosphere. Among three metallic elements of Y, Ba, and Cu, Cu diffuses the fastest into the substrates. Copper silicide is observed in the interfacial region between the film and the Si substrate. Among these substrates, MgO is suggested to be the most stable on annealing.

Notes: The kinetics of reversible resistivity changes during structural relaxation in various Co-Fe based metallic glasses was examined using a nonlinear kinetic form Ψ=exp[−(t/τm)n]. It was found that the data excellently fit the nonlinear kinetic form. The compositional dependence of the kinetic parameters (distribution parameter n, activation energy Ea, and preexponential factor τ0) were obtained, and the microscopic mechanism of atomic rearrangements during the relaxation is discussed.

Notes: The hot working conditions were examined for Nd-Fe-B die-upset magnets. The Nd14Fe80B6 ternary composition has the best workability (die upsetting) from stress-strain curves for the initial stage of die upsetting at hot working temperature. The compression ratio defined as the inverse of reduction in height should be larger than 4 to have materials aligned. Alignment of c axis along the compressive stress direction is obtained, but grain coarsening occurs during die upsetting. Of several additional elements investigated, Ga is the best for enhancing the coercivity with a little sacrifice of remanence and no deterioration in hot workability. Typical magnetic properties for Nd14Fe79.25B6Ga0.75 die-upset magnets are Br =12.4 kG, iHc =19 kOe, and (BH)max =36 MGOe. The irreversible loss after exposure up to 160 °C is under 10% (Pc =2). The iHc of powder made by crushing the die-upset magnets is nearly independent of particle size. Decrease in iHc by pulverizing to several hundred micron is about 2 kOe. Anisotropic bonded magnets were developed using this powder. Best energy products of injection and compression molded magnets with Ga addition are 10 and 15 MGOe, respectively. The irreversible losses after exposure up to 120 °C is lower than 5% (Pc =2), which is enough thermal stability for polymer-bonded magnets.

Notes: We report a 3-month-old male infant with marked folding of the skin, who manifested mental retardation and delayed growth at the age of 31 months. Histological examination of the folded skin disclosed smooth muscle hamartomatous changes. To our knowledge, this represents the third reported case of folded skin with an underlying smooth muscle hamartoma.

Notes: Summary The Pavlik harness was applied to a group of outpatients to treat CDH (group I), to a group of hospitalized patients (group 11), and to a third group who received additional treatment to prevent avascular necrosis of the femoral head, based on the theory that the weight of the lower extremity plays an important role in the successful reduction by the Pavlik harness (group III). The results of the three groups were carefully compared in order to determine the ideal management of infants after application of the harness. No difference was found in the therapeutic results between group I and group III, when the reduction was attempted on the outpatient basis. However, the rates of reduction and anatomical healing were lower in the hospitalized patients of group III than in group 11 patients, but there was no difference in the incidence of avascular necrosis of the femoral head between the two groups. In the treatment of CDH using the Pavlik harness, application of the harness on the outpatient basis should be the first choice. It is fundamental to let the weight of the lower extremity help in effecting abduction of the hip joint, but the general and local reactions of the infant must be watched constantly, because too much pressure on the hip joint could invite avascular necrosis of the femoral head. If reduction at the outpatient clinic fails, the patient should be regarded as having the treatment-resistant type of CDH, and should be treated further with traction of the lower extremity, muscle release, and adjustment of the hip joint angle.

Notes: Abstract As treatment for malignant tumors in the acetabular region of the pelvis, radiotherapy, mainly in the form of intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT), was carried out in four patients. One had a malignant fibrous histiocytoma of bone and three had metastatic tumors from the stomach and lung. Over follow-up period, ranging from 3 to 46 months, satisfactory limb function was preserved in three patients; the fourth suffered from femoral nerve palsy as a complication of IORT. Cessation of growth was observed radiologically in all the tumors, and curative local control was proven histologically in two patients at autopsy.

Notes: Abstract To investigate the development of the blood vessels forming the secondary ossification center in the femoral heads of growing rats, we observed the specimens of the proximal femurs having vascular casts using both an optical and a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Histologically, the vascular invasion occurred from the lateral part of the cartilaginous epiphysis, prior to the appearance of the ossification center. The vascular casts were prominent within the cellular spaces consisting of a few hypertrophic chondrocytes. The SEM study suggested that the vascular buds had peculiar structures and invaded the cartilaginous epithysis by breaking through the cellular spaces. The blood vessels budded out from the arch of the lateral epiphyseal vessels toward the femoral heads. The sizes of the large-caliber vascular buds of about 50 μm in diameter were similar to those of the cellular spaces, and they penetrated into the epiphysis by repeated merging and branching. Many deep impressions were noted on the surface of the vascular buds, and the tips showed the peculiar shape similar to a suction cup.

Notes: Summary We report a patient with spontaneous recovery and recurrence of a jugular foramen syndrome secondary to an accessory nerve neuroma. He showed sudden onset of unilateral palsy of the ninth, tenth and eleventh cranial nerves in 1982. He recovered almost fully and in 1990 the palsies recurred. MRI revealed a small mass in the right jugular foramen. The tumour was resected via suboccipital craniectomy, and diagnosed as a neuroma of the eleventh cranial nerve.
