Notes: The v=1–0 vibration–rotation transitions in the X 2Π and a 4Σ− states as well as those between the two electronic states were observed with a difference frequency laser as a radiation source. The two electronic states (X 2Π and a 4Σ−) lie close together and interact each other strongly through the spin–orbit coupling. A merged least-squares fit was carried out with the present infrared transition wave numbers, some of the previous optical term values, and the recent far-infrared rotational transition frequencies to determine the spectroscopic parameters precisely. The equilibrium internuclear distance was obtained to be 1.0692±0.0002 and 1.0924±0.0001 A(ring) for the X and a states, respectively. The Λ-type doubling transition frequencies were calculated for several of the lowest J states with the molecular constants obtained and the hyperfine coupling constants determined from the far-infrared transitions.

Notes: A CuO/MgO epitaxial artificially superstructured film [CuO(50 A(ring))/MgO(40 A(ring))]40 was successfully grown and its structure was studied by x-ray diffraction (XRD). The film was found to have a texture in which the (111) planes of monoclinic CuO and the (001) planes of cubic MgO were layered perpendicular to the film plane. Its lateral structure was revealed by precession photographs where the CuO [101¯] axis is oriented approximately along the MgO [100] axis in the film plane. The XRD pattern, observed over a wide range of scattering vectors perpendicular to the film plane, was carefully analyzed by an extended step model. The fluctuation of the superlattice period was estimated to be as small as 1 A(ring).

Notes: Superconducting artificially superstructured films (ASFs) composed of MoN and TiN have been prepared by an alternate reactive deposition method. Alternate layers of MoN and TiN were epitaxially grown on MgO(100) single-crystal substrates. Those ASFs with the periodicities of [MoN(0.4 nm)/TiN(0.4nm)], [MoN(0.2 nm)/TiN(3.4 nm)], and [MoN(2.4 nm)/TiN(0.2 nm)] were successfully synthesized. It was confirmed that the precise thickness of ASFs could be controlled on the atomic level. Average lattice constants of ASFs were calculated from the positions of satellite peaks observed in x-ray diffraction. Structural analyses indicate the formation of a single B1-MoN phase when conditions are optimized. ASFs containing B1-MoN layers showed lower superconducting transition temperatures (Tc 's) than those of ASFs with γ-Mo2N. A few probable reasons for the lower Tc are discussed.

Notes: Summary Under the Antarctic coastal fast ice a light trap proved to be promising device for collecting not only planktonic animals, but also micronektonic animals like krill which have been rarely collected with tow nets. Sampling was conducted at night from May through November, 1984 in Kitano-ura Cove off the East Ongul Island in Lützow-Holm Bay. Design of the gear and the sampling procedure are described. A total of 37 samplings were made that resulted in the collection of seven species of copepods, eight species of amphipods, three forms of notothenid fish larvae, two species each of euphausiids and polychaetes, and one species each of mysid, cumacean, isopod and tanaid crustaceans. All were collected in satisfactory condition for laboratory experiments. During the winter Euphasia superba was found to be benthopelagic and it probably feeds on detritus on the sea floor at about 40 m depth under the ice.

Notes: Summary We previously reported that bladder overdistension led to denervation and subsequent supersensitivity of the detrusor muscle to acctylcholine. Therefore, to exclude the influence of bladder overdistension, we produced a low-pressure bladder in female mongrel dogs using an indwelling urethral catheter, and performed pelvic neurectomy (decentralization). We examined the effects of decentralization on the neuromuscular system of the bladder. The contraction response levels of bladder strips in dogs 1 and 2 weeks after neurectomy was low, and significantly different from that of bladder strips in the control group. The doseresponse curves of dogs 4 and 8 weeks after neurectomy showed a shift to the left when compared to those of the control group, indicating a significant increase in sensitivity of the bladder strips. Many cholinergic terminal and varicosity profiles had a normal ultrastructure in all of the groups subjected to neurectomy, while some had degenerating profiles representing clear axoplasm without any recognizable organelles. Microphotographs of bladders obtained from dogs with spontaneous catheter loss showed degenerating axons, which were observed more frequently than in bladders kept empty with indwelling urethral catheters. Micturition in the dogs with spontaneous catheter loss was achieved by overflow incontinence without catheterization. These findings suggest that post-synaptic nerve degeneration may be augmented by impairment of micturition, followed by decentralization. Our observations also suggest that post-synaptic nerve degeneration (denervation) plays an important role in the increased sensitivity of the detrusor muscle to acetylcholine in the parasympathetically decentralized urinary bladder, whether denervation is due to trans-synaptic degeneration or impairment of micturition.

Notes: Summary We previously examined the effects of overdistension on the neuromuscular system of canine urinary bladders and reported that bladder overdistension led to nerve degeneration and subsequent supersensitivity through a decrease of blood supply to the bladder. We have accordingly in this study evaluated these changes in human subjects with infravesical obstruction. The responses to acetylcholine of bladder strips obtained from patients with detrusor instability were not significantly different from those of bladder strips from patients without detrusor instability, but the dose-response curve of these groups showed a shift to the right compared to that of the unobstructed control patients. As compared with the response of bladder strips in patients without an episode of retention, the response in patients who received prostatectomy within 30 days demonstrated no significant difference, although in patients who received prostatectomy after more than 30 days there was a statistical difference. These results indicated a significant decrease in sensitivity of the detrusor muscle in patients with infravesical obstruction and suggest that bladder overdistension caused by infravesical obstruction may lead to supersensitivity of the detrusor muscle secondary to denervation.
