Notes: The gluing construction of lattices is used to generate and study a number of theta function densities. It is shown, for example, that Riemann's formula, a fundamental degree 4 identity, can be derived from a degree 2 identity. It is proved that all in a large class of identities can be derived from these lattice techniques. A list of 24 independent quadratic identities in the Jacobi functions cursive-theta1 and cursive-theta3, conjectured to be complete, with all but two of them seeming to be new, is given. The theta series of glue classes is also investigated, and it is shown that all of them, as well as the functions cursive-thetaa,b, satisfy polynomials whose coefficients are linear combinations of theta series of lattices; these polynomials have some interesting properties.

Notes: The gluing construction of lattices is used to generate and study a number of theta constant identities. It is shown, for example, that the Jacobi identity, a well-known degree 4 identity, can be derived from a degree 2 identity. A list of all quadratic identities in θ3 derivable from this lattice method, containing over 30 algebraically independent identities, and conjectured to yield all quadratic identities in θ3 derivable by any means, is included. In contrast, only two independent quadratic identities in θ3 have been found elsewhere in the mathematical literature. The theta constants of lattices and their glue classes are investigated, and the fact that the theta constant of each glue class is a root of a polynomial whose coefficients are linear combinations of theta constants of lattices is shown.

Notes: Prognosis in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is not only correlated closely with blast cell count in bone marrow and chromosomal abnormalities but also correlated with decreased leucocyte count and function leading to acquisition of lethal infections. Recently, clinical trials in MDS have focused on the application of haemopoietic growth factors such as G-CSF or GM-CSF, which have proven to increase neutrophil count and function. However, these cytokines carry the risk of stimulating the malignant clone, particularly in patients with increased blast cell count. Therefore, investigation of cytokines which are able to stimulate neutrophil function without the potential risk of stimulating haemopoietic progenitor cells may be relevant for MDS.As the stimulatory effect of interleukin-8 on neutrophil function is well known, we investigated whether recombinant human IL-8 is also able to improve the function of neutrophils gained from patients with MDS. Using three different techniques—the E. coli killing assay (8 patients), the production of reactive oxygen as determined by cytochrome c reduction (7 patients) and chemiluminescence (8 patients)—a significant stimulation of neutrophil function at a concentration of 10 nM IL-8 was found in all test systems. No correlation with FAB classification was evident. On the other hand, IL-8 only mildly stimulated growth of myeloid progenitor cells in bone marrow culture of healthy individuals and MDS patients. This minimal stimulation was blocked by a neutralizing antibody directed against GM-CSF, suggesting an indirect effect of IL-8 via secondary GM-CSF release. Thus, IL-8 is able in vitro to repair the functional abnormalities of neutrophils from patients with MDS but has only a marginal influence on myeloid progenitor cells.

Notes: Abstract Twelve enteric bacterial strains were recovered by differential centrifugation of urines which were collected from clinically diagnosed and microbiologically confirmed cases of urinary tract infection. The outer membrane protein (OMP) profiles of the clinical isolates were then analysed by sodiumdodecylsulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). It was found that 5 of the 12 isolates (3 Escherichia coli strains, 1 Klebsiella pneumoniae and 1 Proteus mirabilis strain) expressed 2 or more high Mr proteins in the range of 66000 to 85000. These high Mr proteins were expressed by the same organisms during growth in vitro in iron-restricted conditions but not in iron-sufficient media. In addition, it was found that the major outer membrane proteins expressed by the clinical isolates varied considerably and that, in many cases, fresh isolates expressed fewer porin proteins than the same bacterial strains after growth in vitro in trypticase soy broth. This is thus the first evidence the E. coli, K. pneumoniae and P. mirabilis grow under iron-restricted conditions in the urinary tract of humans and that the outer membrane protein profile of clinical isolates differ from in vitro grown bacteria.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, a quadratic programming model is developed to take into consideration a number of factors that can influence the process of optimal allocation of data among the nodes in a distributed database. The factors include communication costs, translation costs, congestion costs and storage costs. Beale's method is used to solve the resulting quadratic program. Some numerical examples are presented and the potentials of such an approach in the design and analysis of distributed databases are discussed.

Notes: Abstract We have annealed amorphous Fe78B13Si9 samples at temperaturesT a = 355 to 460 ° C for timet a = 10 to 60 min, in an atmosphere with purging of nitrogen gas. After thermal treatment, we examined the hysteresis loop, DSC curve, and the X-ray diffractogram of each sample. The coercivityH c, the peak inductionB max, and the lossW h were analysed to study the affects of annealing. Stress-relief and partial crystallization are two important parameters in determining optimal annealing conditions.

Notes: Two new internal friction peaks have been observed in single-crystal silicon in the temperature range from 100 to 270 K of the Arrhenius-type relaxation at kilohertz frequencies. The activation energies of the two peaks are 0.14 and 0.20 eV. We attribute them to vibration of trapped interstital oxygen and the oxygen-vacancy complex, respectively.
