Notes: : Specific capacity data obtained from Well Construction reports which are available from USGS offices, can provide useful estimates of tranamissivity (T), and hydraulic conductivity (K), of an aquifer. The Chicot Aquifer in Louisiana is one of the largest sources of fresh ground water in North America. Hydrologic data collected for the Chicot Aquifer indicate that specific capacity tests can be used in estimating local and regional values for T and K, if the Cooper-Jacob equation for transient flow is used with proper corrections for well loss and partial penetration. Where full scale pumping test data are scarce, specific capacity test data that are adequately distributed spatially can be used to map changes in T and K values and can be summarized statistically to indicate applicable regional values. A computer program called “TGUESS” which is available from International Ground Water Modeling Center, Holcomb Research Institute, was used in this study. The contour maps for T and K values are prepared for different well depth intervals to avoid wide variation of values.

Notes: Abstract A detailed ophthalmic evaluation including slitlamp biomicroscopy, measurement of corneal sensitivity using Cochet and Bonnet aesthesiometer, Schirmer's test and Goldmann applanation tonometry was carried out in 89 patients of Hansen's disease attending the leprosy clinic with or without ocular symptoms and willing to undergo eye evaluation. Thirty-one patients had lepromatous leprosy (8 with erythema nodosum leprosum), 56 patients had borderline disease (13 with reversal reactions) and 2 had tuberculoid disease. In addition to the well documented changes of lagophthalmos (6.7%), uveitis (7.3%) and cataracts (19%), we noted prominent corneal nerves in 133 eyes (74.7%), beaded corneal nerves in 19 eyes (10.7%), corneal scarring in 10 eyes (5.6%), corneal hypoaesthesia in 51 eyes (28%) and dry eye in 18 eyes (13%). Beaded corneal nerves and/or stomal infiltrates occurred mainly in the lepromatous group (75%). Ocular hypotony (IOP less than 12 mm Hg) was not seen more frequently in Hansen's as compared to age and sex matched controls with refractive errors or cataracts (33.7%, vs. 37.8%,p=0.33). Our study highlights the primary corneal involvement with corneal neuropathy as the predominant feature of Hansen's disease.

Notes: Abstract Pentasil zeolites of ZSM-5 type are synthesised hydrothermally using triethyl-n-proplyammonium bromide (TEPA-Br) and triethyl-n-butylammonium bromide (TEBA-Br). The crystallization kinetics, followed by XRD, SEM and thermal analysis, clearly demonstrate the influence of size and molecular weight of the templating quaternary ammonium cation (QAC) species on the rates of nucleation and crystallization. The values of the apparent activation energies for nucleation and crystal growth indicate that both nucleation and crystal growth are faster when TEPA-Br rather than TEBA-Br is used as a template. The quantitative identification of intergrown phases characterizes both the phases to be ZSM-5 zeolite. Thermoanalytical curves for both these zeolites in as-synthesised forms exhibit two-step oxidative decomposition of the occluded organic species. This suggests that the quaternary ammonium cation may be located at two energetically different sites within the zeolite channels. The equilibrium sorption capacity, however, is found to increase in the order of size and molecular weight of the templating species in both the zeolites. The nature of acid site distribution, obtained from the temperature programmed desorption of ammonia is found to be independent of the templating species used during the synthesis.

Notes: Abstract The nuclear quadrupole interaction at the100Rh probe nucleus in a Be host is measured from 4.2–968 K using time-differential perturbed γ-γ angular correlations of the 84–75 keV cascade in the de-excitation of100Rh. The sources were prepared by recoilimplanting the parent100Pd activity produced in a heavy-ion reaction. The temperature variation of the electric field gradient can nicely be fitted by aT 3/2 law. We discuss the electric field gradient and its temperature dependence in the light of various systematics. The data are also compared with the predictions of the conduction electron charge shift model suggested by Bodenstedt and Perscheid.

Notes: Abstract The large recoil energies offered by the heavy ion nuclear reactions were used to implant the100Pd(3.6 d) activity into different host matrices. The sources thus prepared were found to have good strengths and small background activities. The yields were quite high ∼3μCi/1μAh beam current of12C4+ and the efficiencies of implantation were in the range 60–70%. The difference in the recoil energies of the target and the catcher may be used to reduce activities due to unwanted nuclear reactions in the catcher foil. Using this method, we were able to prepare excellent sources of100Pd in Be, Mg, Ti, Zr and Re hosts. The quality of these sources is comparable to that of the100PdBe ion implanted sources for which data are available in the literature.

Notes: Abstract The electric field gradients (EFGs) at different probe nuclei in Ti and Re hosts are compared with the predictions of the conduction electron charge shift model. It is found that this model is successful in predicting the sign and, to a zero-order approximation, the magnitude of the EFG when the localized d-contributions are small and the universal correlation is obeyed.
