Notes: Recently, Asano and Stutzmann [J. Appl. Phys. 70, 5025 (1991) and J. Non-Cryst. Solids 137&138, 623 (1991)] examined the effects of in-depth nonuniformity on optical absorption spectra of thin films, and reported that the amplitude of interference fringes is related to the depth profile of absorbing centers. They used this effect to analyze photothermal deflection spectra (PDS) of amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) films to get information on surface and interface defects. In a previous paper [Grillo and De Angelis, J. Non-Cryst. Solids 114, 750 (1989)], we introduced this technique to study surface/interface defects in a-Si:H, and gave the analytical formula for calculating explicitly the effect; here we show that application of this equation gives readily the shape of fringes for the cases of interest.

Notes: Abstract: A specific and sensitive gas chromatographic–mass spectrometric assay for measurement of normetanephrine (NMN) in different rat brain regions is presented. The results show that hypothalamus contains the highest concentrations of the norepinephrine metabolite. An increase of NMN concentrations has been detected in animals killed by decapitation in comparison with microwave–irradiated rats. This finding has to be taken into consideration when NMN is measured in the brain in order to assess the functional activity of noradrenergic neurons.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetic profile of Sobrerol, a mucolytic drug, has been studied in patients with acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and dense sputum. In addition to measurement of serum and urine levels, the concentration in bronchial mucus was also examined, and their correlation was calculated. Mass fragmentographic analysis was used to assay free sobrerol and its principal urinary metabolites hydrated carvone and glucuronidated sobrerol. After the doses and administration routes used, there appeared to be accumulation of sobrerol in bronchial mucus. This is a feature of great interest and value for a drug which has the specific action of liquefying mucus.

Notes: We previously showed that the adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) is a mitogen for myoblasts and is present in post-implantation mammalian embryos (Cossu et al. [1989] Dev. Biol. 131:331-336; De Angelis et al. [1992] Dev. Biol. 151:446-458). In this paper, we investigated the expression of the corresponding gene, pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC), by in situ hybridization and polymerase chain reaction. In situ analysis revealed low level expression in the basal layer of 10.5 d.p.c. neural tube and in several discrete areas around the dorsal aorta. By more sensitive Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis, expression was detected also in developing limb buds and in cultured myogenic cells, but not in fibroblasts. To investigate the possible role of POMC gene expression in myogenesis, we induced its over-expression in proliferating myoblasts. Upon sub-optimal growth conditions, over-expressing cells were found to give rise to clones larger than control cells. The differentiation potential of POMC over-expressing myogenic cells was unchanged. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: Summary Since 1985 the conditioning of fresh seafish muscle reference materials to be certified for trace metals has been studied by CBNM at the request of BCR. This paper describes the study of the production process of a codfish reference material to be certified for Pb, Cd, Hg, Fe and Zn and its subsequent preparation. In particular, the collection of the base material, its transformation into powder by cryo-grinding in all-teflon equipment, the production of dry powder by freeze-drying and the conditioning and bottling of the candidate reference material. Production control and final homogeneity assessment were carried out by solid sampling Zeeman atomic absorption spectrometry. Analyses at different stages in the production process indicate that heterogeneities existing in the starting material are gradually eliminated in the subsequent production stages and that no external contamination occurs.

Notes: Summary A method was developed to determine traces of silver in copper by direct Zeeman graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (ZAAS) on solid samples. The system is calibrated using quantitatively doped copper, whose blank silver content is determined using an iterative process. The method has been applied to the analysis of several candidate reference materials. Relative standard deviations of 2 to 5% are obtained in the range 1 to 12 μg·g−1. Furthermore, it was also applied to assess the homogeneity of a neutron dosimetry candidate reference material.
