Notes: Two cases of melanocytic lesions in lymph node associated with congenital naevus are presented. The first was a 30-year-old man with a nodular melanoma arising in a small congenital naevus. The second was a 2-year-old male infant with a giant congenital naevus. In both cases, naevus cell aggregates were observed in the capsule, trabeculae, perisinusoidal areas and lymphatic vessels surrounding the nodes. In the first case, clusters of large atypical melanocytes were present amongst naevus cell aggregates in the perisinusoidal areas as well as in the lymphoid parenchyma. Between the naevus cells and large atypical melanocytes, transitional forms were observed which supports the idea that the presence of large atypical melanocytes is indicative of benign naevus cells. In the second case, marginal sinuses were packed with clusters of large melanin-rich cells. Immunohistochemically, these cells were S-100 protein negative, but ultrastructural studies proved them to be melanocytes. They were considered indicative of spread of benign naevus cells via lymphatic vessels. Arrested migration of naevus cells during embryogenesis and benign spread of naevus cells are possible explanations for the histogenesis of naevus cell aggregates in lymph nodes associated with congenital naevus.

Notes: Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNLs) are the most numerous cell population among the cellular infiltrates in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and play important roles in the host-defensive system in the gingival crevices. We determined the percentage of neutrophils, cosinophils and basophils in total PMNLs by light microscopic observation using Randolph-methylene blue staining, then assessed flow cytometric differences in the expression of CR3, FcγRIII, FcɛRII. LFA-1α, and LFA-Iβ on PMNL in GCF and peripheral blood (PB) from 21 patients with adult periodontius (AP) and 13 healthy donors. Percentages of basophils and eosinophils were higher in GCF than in PB. In both AP patients and healthy subjects, expression of CR3 and FcɛRll was higher while FeγRIII was lower in GCF than in PB. The statistical analysis showed that the expressions of FcγRIII and FcɛRII on GCF PMNLs were lower in AP patients than in healthy subjects. Expressions of LFA-1α and β on GCF were similar to those on PB PMNLs. PB PMNLs stimulated in vitro with Porphyromonas gingivalts culture supernatant and fMLP displayed an expression pattern of CR3, FcγRIII and FcɛRII on GCF PMNLs. However, C5a and IL-I failed to induce changes in FcγRIII and FcɛRII. The results indicate that GCF neutrophils are activated, present enhanced adhesion and a decreased IgG-binding ability which would reflect that they are at the terminal stage of activation, and that GCF contains a larger eosinophil fraction than in PB. Moreover, these GCF eosinophils appear to be activated.

Notes: Summary A screening method for detecting volatile hydrocarbons in blood has been developed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry with a wide-bore capillary column and a headspace method. Toluene-d8 and indan were used as the internal standards for quantitative analysis. Hydrocarbons with retention indices from 600 to 1200 were simultaneously and quantitatively detected in relatively low concentrations (0.01 μg/m1) in reconstructed ion chromatography. This method could prove useful in forensic cases in which urgent examination of complex hydrocarbon mixtures, e.g. petroleum components, is required.

Notes: Summary This Study was carried out to examine the post-mortem stability of hapten-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody in mice by the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis test in rats. In vitro IgE antibody responses in blood were stable for 3 days at room temperature. Even in cases when blood could not be obtained from the caver it was possible to measure the hapten-specific IgE antibody response up to 3 days after death using the supernatant of the visceral homogenates.

Notes: Abstract The etiological factors, clinical aspects and long term prognosis were studied in 200 patients with infantile spasms. Forty-eight (24.0%) died and the rest were aged 6 years or more at the time of final follow-up. In 73 (36.5%) the etiology was prenatal, in 44 (22.0%) perinatal, and in 17 (8.5%) postnatal: 18 cases (9.0%) were cryptogenic. The remaining 48 (24.0%) patients were doubtful cases. The mortality of the pre-and perinatal cases at 35.6% and 34.1% respectively was significantly higher than that in the other etiologic groups (P〈0.001). With regard to the onset of spasms, these were very carly in the pre-and perinatal groups, whereas in the postnatal group the onset was late. The onset in the doubtful and cryptogenic groups was in between. Some 44.4% of the cryptogenic cases showed normal mental and physical development after the age of 6 years, whereas less than 10% of the prenatal and perinatal group did so. Almost all of the doubtful cases became mentally subnormal. The incidence of a family history of epilepsy or other convulsive disorders in the first, second and third degree relatives was highest in the cryptogenic cases (40.0%), and lowest in the perinatal cases (9.3%) (P〈0.01). The incidence of laughing attacks was highest in the postnatal cases (42.9%), against no such attacks in cryptogenic cases (P〈0.01). The attacks seemed to be linked with organic brain lesions. Among various factors related to the etiology of infantile spasms, genetic propensity seemed especially important in cryptogenic cases.

Notes: Abstract Long-Term Potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampus has been considered to be a phenomenon closely related to learning and memory in the brain. In this paper, an integrated model of LTP is constructed based on hypotheses about both the mechanism of LTP induction and that of LTP maintenance, that is, the NMDA-receptor channel, protein phosphorylation and protein turnover. The validity of the model is discussed based on the results of computer simulations.

Notes: Abstract The EEG, visual and auditory evoked potentials (VEP, AEP) were evaluated in 16 full-term newborn infants who had intracranial hemorrhage documented by computerized tomography (CT). Three of them had supratentorial, three, supra- and infratentorial hemorrhage, while the other ten had infra- or peri-tentorial bleeding. Three died during the neonatal period. Eight of the 13 surviving infants were neurologically normal and five were abnormal at the time of the follow-up. Those who had normal or mildly abnormal background EEGs all developed normally, while those whose neonatal EEG was severely abnormal subsequently developed neurological sequelae irrespective of the extent of intracranial hemorrhage. The EEG, VEP or AEP is of little value in the diagnosis of intracranial bleeding but the EEG is valuable in assessing the degree of associated parenchymatous damage and is of great prognostic significance.
