Notes: We demonstrate, by both microwave experiments and numerical simulation, that a two-dimensional lattice of metal cylinders can form a complete photonic band-gap (PBG) structure. The band structure exhibits a single broad PBG extending from zero frequency to a threshold frequency, above which all modes may propagate in some direction. A single cylinder removed from the lattice produces a defect mode localized about the defect site, with an energy density attenuation rate of 30 dB per lattice constant. The frequency dependence of the transmission through a finite thickness of this structure is also calculated in good agreement with the measurements. We suggest that the defect mode resonant cavity when formed by appropriate low loss metals may be advantageous for use in PBG high energy accelerator structures that we are evaluating.

Notes: [Auszug] Blue-green algae enter into symbiosis with a variety of plant groups7,8 and for some of these, the phycobiont has been shown to fix nitrogen making it available to the host. It has been assumed8 that the same holds true for Gunnera-Nostoc, although Scott9 speculates that any contribution of fixed ...

Notes: Abstract A simplified theory for the performance of a digital optical receiver is developed. The receiver sensitivity is calculated in terms of circuit parameters, received and equalized pulse shapes, photodiode parameters and bit-rate. An excellent agreement between this theory and a more complicated analysis by Personick [4] is demonstrated. It is shown that the receiver sensitivity may be improved by launching reduced-width pulses into the fibre, particularly if fibre bandwidth is a significant limitation. Reduced-width pulses bring benefits in source power consumption and lifetime, and in timing recovery.

Notes: Abstract The effects of photodiode bulk leakage current and amplifier noise on receiver sensitivity are analysed using a model described previously [4]. The sensitivity of a receiver using a PIN photodiode can be greatly improved by employing a high-performance microwave FET in the input stage, to the point where its remaining technical disadvantage in comparison with a silicon APD receiver at 800–900 nm may be offset by economic and operational attractions. In systems operating at the optimum transmission wavelength beyond 1.1 μm, the PIN-FET hybrid receiver may offer better technical performance than an APD receiver.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Anatomie, radiographische Darstellung und pathologische Bedeutung der tentoriellen Arterie, die ein Ast der kavernösen Verlaufsstrecke der A. carotis interna ist, werden besprochen.
Notes: Summary The anatomy, radiographic visualization and pathological significance of the tentorial artery, which is a branch of the cavernous portion of the internal carotid artery, is discussed. Eighteen patients with an enlarged tentorial artery are described. The diagnoses in these patients were almost equally divided among tentorial meningiomas (4), malignant gliomas (6) and arteriovenous malformations (4). In addition there was a single case in which this vessel fed an acoustic neuroma; this relationship has not been previously reported. In three cases the enlarged artery was not recognizably related to the lesion present.

Notes: Abstract A study was made of the wall pressure fluctuations in the reattachment region of a supersonic free shear layer. The free shear layer was formed by the separation of a Mach 2.9 turbulent boundary layer from a backward facing step. Reattachment occurred on a 20° ramp. By adjusting the position of the ramp, the base pressure at the step was set equal to the freestream pressure, and the free shear layer formed in the absence of any turning. An array of flush-mounted, miniature, high-frequency pressure transducers was used in the vicinity of the reattachment region to make multichannel measurements of the fluctuating wall pressure. Contrary to previous observations of this flow, the reattachment region was found to be highly unsteady, and the pressure fluctuations were found to be large. The overall behavior of the wall pressure loading is similar in scale and magnitude to the unsteadiness of the wall pressure field in compression ramp flows at the same Mach number. Rayleigh scattering was used to visualize the instantaneous shock structure in the streamwise and spanwise direction. Spanwise “wrinkles” on the order of half the boundary layer thickness were observed on the shock sheet.

Notes: Abstract Approximately 11,500 seedlings from 510 lines of perennial rye-grass (Lolium perenne L.) were screened for tolerance to aluminium (Al) using a low ionic strength ‘still’ solution culture technique. Although none of the individual lines were consistently more tolerant than any other line, 23 individual plants were selected from 13 lines for superior vigour and colour in the presence of Al. The growth of three of these elite plants was examined on a reconstructed acid soil profile protected from prevailing weather conditions allowing control of the moisture status of the soil. The plants selected for Al tolerance in solution culture had significantly higher yields before drought and after recovery from drought than the rye-grass cultivars Ariki, Ellett and Droughtmaster and 4 other hill country lines which were previously selected for high yields in the presence and absence of nitrogen, and for drought and grassgrub resistance. Of the total number of plants tested from all cultivars and lines, 〈2% had yields that were greater than one third of the yields of the 3 Al tolerant plants. The better performance of the Al tolerant plants is attributed to better root growth in the acid soil. Three polycrosses were made from the 23 Al tolerant plants selected in solution culture. When tested in solution culture, the yields of the half-sib families in the presence of Al averaged approximately twice that of Grasslands Nui in one experiment, but were similar to Grasslands Nui in another. Heritability of total yield and relative yield in the presence of Al, calculated from half-sib measurements on a single replicate basis, averaged 0.33 and 0.24 respectively. Individual plants from the half-sib families from two polycrosses were grown in a nursery and heading date and vigour recorded. There were no significant differences in heading data between the polycross lines and either of the cultivars Grasslands Nui or Yatsyn. Although there were significant differences in spring vigour between lines, they were not significantly different from either Grasslands Nui or Yatsyn. Twelve of the polycross lines showed decreased vigour in summer and autumn. This decline in vigour was attributed to damage from Argentine stem weevil (Listronotus bonariensis) as a consequence of low levels of lolium endophyte (Acremonoim lolii).
