Notes: Five patients with long-standing seronegative arthritis resistant to conventional therapy and who also had psoriasis of the skin were treated with photopheresis. This mode of treatment combines a lymphocyte-enrichment procedure with 8–methoxypsoralen-photochemotherapy. There was a marked in vitro effect on treated lymphocytes, with a reduction of viability, proliferation and mitogen response. There was a slight to moderate clinical improvement in four of the five patients with regard to the strength of grip, swelling, pain, morning stiffness, the dosage of non-steroidal anti-rheumatic drugs and the radiographical changes. The skin lesions did not respond to photopheresis. Short-term side-effects were minimal and consisted of a temporary sensitivity of the eyes to light and signs of circulatory dysregulation immediately after treatment. This experimental therapy has some measurable but not dramatic effect in improving psoriatic arthropathy.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary An estimation of the electrolytic losses through the skin was evaluated in a run over a distance of 10 km on a 400 m Tartan-trac. Na, K, Ca, and Mg excreted by the skin were collected in standardised clothing and thereafter washed out. The remaining electrolytes on the skin were collected by washing the body with deionized water. In addition, the concentrations of hormones and metabolites in blood before and after the race were ascertained. Mean ambiant temperature and relative humidity amounted to 21 °C and 35 %, respectively. The mean performance was 40.5 min. and the average body weight loss was 1.45 kg. The only significant changes in the serum concentrations were the increases of free fatty acids and glycerol. This can be explained, together with a slight increase of glucose and a decrease of insulin, by a higher sympathoadrenergic activity. In the mean 20 mg calcium, 5 mg magnesium, 200 mg potassium, and 800 mg sodium were lost by the skin per kg body weight loss. Those amounts compared well with corresponding data found in literature. The described method can be proposed for further experiments.

Notes: Summary Rat VLDL were glycated in vitro in the presence or absence of a reducing agent. Prior to glycation, the VLDL triglyceride was endogenously radiolabelled with [3H]-oleic acid. Post glycation the VLDL B-apoprotein was exogenously radiolabelled with [131]I. The double labelled VLDL was then injected into normal rats and the decline in plasma radioactivity of the two isotopes was used as a measure of triglyceride and particle clearance. VLDL glycated in either the presence or absence of reducing agent exhibited a significantly slower removal of triglyceride and apoprotein B compared to normal VLDL. The ability of glycated VLDL triglyceride to act as substrate for lipoprotein lipase and hepatic lipase was examined. Increasing concentrations of normal and glycated VLDL triglyceride were incubated with post-heparin plasma. The kinetics of triglyceride hydrolysis were determined in a manner analagous to Michaelis-Menten analysis. Glycated VLDL was found to be poorer than normal VLDL as a substrate for lipoprotein lipase. Glycation of VLDL appears to interfere with the lipolysis of its triglyceride. This may explain the delayed clearance of glycated VLDL triglyceride in vivo. Glycation also extended the mean plasma residence time of the VLDL particle. These factors may, in part, contribute to the hypertriglyceridaemia observed in subjects with diabetes mellitus.

Description / Table of Contents: Competing Mechanisms in the Interconversion of Some Cycloadducts of 1,2-Dichloroethylene to CyclopentadieneSix of the seven products obtained in the cycloaddition of cyclopentadiene to cis- and trans- 1,2-dichloroethylenes were examined and found to undergo a variety of isomerizations above 300°C. The 2,7-dichloronorbornene 1 and the two 3,5-dichloronortricyclenes 2 und 3, which are the sole products of the rearrrangement of the 2,3-dichloronorbornenes in titanium tetrachloride, are absent in the product obtained when five of the seven cycloaducts are thermolyzed over quartz (450-500°C/0.6 torr). Under these conditions a reunion of the Diels-Alder reversion products is also not observed. In twelve such thermolyses (Table 4) 15% of the observed products represented Berson rearrangement products (consistent with „symmetryallowed“ inversion under HOMO control); 34% were consistent with subjacent orbital control; 29% with epimerization; 21% with ionic rearrangements and 1% with other reaction modes. The structures of the rearrangement prodcuts were established and the competing mechanisms are discussed in terms of known analogies.
