Notes: The microstructure and magnetic properties of polycrystalline Fe films with thicknesses of 200–1000 A(ring) have been investigated. The films were prepared by rf sputtering onto SiO2 substrates. The investigation was prompted by the lack of data on sputtered Fe films in this thickness regime as well as disagreement in the data for evaporated films. In addition to thickness, substrate temperature and deposition pressure were varied to examine their effect on the microstructure. The film microstructure was characterized by x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Auger spectroscopy. The polycrystalline films did not display a strong preferred orientation and had average grain sizes of 60–85 A(ring). Surface oxide layers formed upon exposure to air ranged from 10 to 80 A(ring), the thicker oxides formed on films with lower density. Magnetic hysteresis measurements were made with a vibrating sample magnetometer. Below 1000 A(ring), porosity and surface oxidation result in reductions up to 25% in the saturation magnetization. An anomalous peak in coercivity at film thicknesses of 300–500 A(ring) was observed, which can be explained by the change in domain wall type.

Notes: As part of a fundamental study of interface magnetism in Fe/Fe3O4 multilayer systems, we have examined the magnetic properties of polycrystalline Fe3O4 thin films. Fe3O4 thin films, deposited by reactive evaporation and sputtering, have been previously studied because they serve as a precursor for the formation of γ-Fe2O3. The film thicknesses used in these studies have typically been greater than 100 nm. We have examined the magnetic properties and microstructure of Fe3O4 films with thicknesses less than 100 nm, a regime in which the magnetic properties have been reported to be strongly dependent on thickness.1 The films were deposited by rf sputtering. The processing variables examined include substrate material, substrate temperature, oxygen partial pressure, and film thickness. The microstructural origins of the observed coercivity and anisotropy will be discussed, as well as trends in the saturation behavior.

Notes: Recently, a new contactless Jc measurement technique by monitoring nonlinear responses from a coil mounted in the proximity of a superconducting film was reported by Classen et al. [Rev. Sci. Instrum. 62, 996 (1991)]. An improved method to measure the nonlinear inductive response is developed using an inductance bridge circuit, which discriminates the third-harmonic signal due to the nonlinearity from those of other origins. Moreover, in this technique, the phase of the third-harmonic signal can be used to determine the critical current.

Notes: We have investigated the magnetic properties of Fe3O4 thin films with thicknesses below 1000 A(ring). Previous reports had indicated an anomalous decrease in the saturation magnetization of Fe3O4 films with thicknesses below 700 A(ring). The films were prepared by reactive rf magnetron sputtering and effects of film thickness, oxygen flow rate, and substrate temperature were examined. A region of acceptable magnetic properties, which do not vary with film thickness, for Fe3O4 films has been found at both RT and 400 °C. Within the processing region for single-phase Fe3O4, the magnetic properties did not vary significantly with oxygen partial pressure but did change with substrate temperature. The RT films are characterized by low saturation magnetization, 250 emu/cm3, and modest coercivity, 250 Oe. The films at 400 °C have a higher saturation magnetization, 330 emu/cm3, but also a higher coercivity, 450 Oe. The increased saturation magnetization at higher temperature results from the higher film density and lower degree of cation disorder; the higher coercivity at 400 °C is anomalous. In addition, at RT we have discovered a processing region where ferrimagnetic wüstite, Fe1−xO, is formed. The Fe1−xO films have good soft magnetic properties and warrant further study.

Notes: Abstract The linkage relationship between the semidwarf gene (sd-1) and the isozyme locus EstI-2 was elucidated using segregating populations derived from crosses between several semidwarf testers and tall rice varieties. Bimodal distributions for culm length were observed in F2 populations of three cross combinations, including Shiokari/Shiokari (sd-1), Taichung 65 (A,Pn,Pau)/Taichung 65 (sd-1), and Milyang 23/Kasalath. Taking the valley of the distribution curves as the dividing point, two height classes were apparent with a segregation ratio of 3 tall∶1 short, demonstrating this character to be under the control of a single recessive gene. An inheritance study of esterase isozymes, based on isoelectric focusing (IEF), showed that the EstI-2 locus had two active allozymes of monomeric structure and one null form, which were designated “a”, “b”, and “n”, respectively (Eun et al. 1990). Semidwarf testers such as Shiokari (sd-1), Taichung 65 (sd-1) and Milyang 23 have an active allozyme designated as EstI-2aa, while the tall parents, Shiokari and Taichung 65 (A,Pn,Pau), have the active allozyme, EstI-2bb, and Kasalath has a null form of the allozyme, EstI-2nn. By dividing F2 populations based on EstI-2 allozyme patterns, culmlength distributions exhibited trimodal curves. Most of the short plants had the homozygous EstI-2aa pattern of the short parents, most of the tall plants had the homozygous pattern, EstI-2bb or EstI-2nn, and most of the intermediate plants had the heterozygous EstI-2ab or EstI-2an banding pattern. Einkage analysis indicated that sd-1 and EstI-2 were tightly linked. These findings were also confirmed by segregation analyses in F3 progenies. No recombinants among 171 F3 families from the Shiokari/Shiokari (sd-1) combination, five recombinants among 267 F3 families from Taichung 65 (A,Pn,Pau)/Taichung 65(sd-1), and only two recombinants out of 237 F3 families from Milyang 23/Kasalath, were found. The recombination values were 0, 1.87 and 0.8%, respectively.

Notes: Abstract High spin states in115Te have been studied using the89Y (29Si, p2n) reaction at a beam energy of 108 MeV.γ-γ coincidence, Eγ, Iγ and excitation functions have been measured. The level scheme has been extended to 82 MeV excitation energy relative to the 11/2 state and several new states are established. The systematical behaviour in odd- N Te isotopes is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Stripped rabbit descending colon mucosae were studied in vitro in modified Ussing chambers to determine the effects of AlF 4 − and vanadate on Cl− transport. Serosal additions of AlF 4 − and vanadate increase short-circuit current (I SC) and tissue conductance, while luminal addition of the agents is ineffective. Addition of aluminium potentiates the effect of NaF on I SC. AlF 4 − and vanadate increase serosal-to-mucosal flux of 36Cl without affecting mucosal-to-serosal flux. The effects of these agents on I SC are markedly inhibited by serosal addition of bumetanide and depend on the presence of Na+ in the serosal bathing solution. The effects of AlF 4 − and vanadate on I SC are dependent on the presence of Ca2+ in the bathing solution, and are completely inhibited by indomethacin, but the effect of forskolin is not affected by the removal of Ca2+ from the bathing solution and the addition of indomethacin. AlF 4 − and vanadate significantly increase the level of inositol phosphate metabolites. The results indicate that AlF 4 − and vanadate increase Cl− secretion in the rabbit colon via an increase in prostaglandin synthesis which is mediated by the increase of intracellular Ca2+ concentrations.

Notes: Abstract The primary structure of adult marmoset hemoglobin has been determined. The α- and β-chains of HbA were separated on a CM23 column in 8 M urea using a sodium phosphate gradient. Tryptic digests of the α- and β-chains were fractionated on a Dowex 50W-X2 column using a pH and pyridine acetate gradient. Large peptide fragments were obtained by the cyanogen bromide cleavage of the α- and β-chains, as well as by tryptic digestion of the maleylated α- and β-chains. The sequence was derived from the amino acid compositions and sequences of the individual tryptic peptide, automated sequence determination of intact α- and β-chains, as well as automated sequence determination of cyanogen bromide fragments and tryptic maleylated peptides derived from the α- and β-chains. The complete structure of marmoset adult hemoglobin is closely homologous to that of other primate hemoglobins. The sequence of the marmoset α-chain differs from the α-chain of human HbA at positions 8, 19, 23, 68, and 116. The β-chain from marmoset HbA differs from the β-chain of human HbA at positions 5, 13, 21, 50, 87, and 125.
