Notes: We have determined reduced absorption coefficients in far wings of the Yb (6s2)1S0–(6s6p)1P1 line broadened by He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, and Yb. We find a prominent blue-satellite peak for all perturbers and undulations between the satellite peak and the line center for Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe. Analyzing the satellite band with the aid of the unified Franck–Condon method, we obtain the position and the height of the extremum on the difference potential-energy curves concerned. We have also observed collision-induced-dipole absorption bands associated with the transition (6s2)1S0–(6s5d)3D2 of atomic Yb for Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe perturbers.

Notes: We have determined reduced absorption coefficients on far wings of the Ba 6s2 1S0–5d6p 1P1 line broadened by He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe. Using the unified Franck–Condon theory, we analyzed the blue satellite band observed for each of the He, Ne, and Ar perturbers and obtained the position and the height of the extremum of the difference potential-energy curve to be 6.5±1.5 A and 251±4 cm−1 for He, 7.6±2 A and 114±2 cm−1 for Ne, and 7.4±2 A and 70±2 cm−1 for Ar. We have also observed the collision-induced–dipole absorption bands associated with the Ba 6s2 1S0–6s7s 1S0 forbidden transition for all rare-gas perturbers.

Notes: Reduced absorption coefficients γBaBa were measured for the far-wing absorption of the self-broadened Ba6s2 1S0–5d6p 1P1 line, Ba(6s2 1S0) +Ba(6s2 1S0)+(h-dash-bar)ω → Ba*(5d6p 1P1)+Ba(6s21 S0)and the pair absorption Ba(6s2 1S0)+Ba(6s2 1 S0) +(h-dash-bar)ω→Ba*(6s6p 1P1 +Ba*(6s5d 1D2). The self-broadening shows the red-shaded asymmetric profile: γBaBa on the red wing is proportional to Δν−3/2, where Δν is the detuning from the line center. The pair absorption shows a broad asymmetric peak having a blue tail and a blue satellite. The estimated γBaBa, which is based on the quasistatic line-broadening theory and the long-range dipole–dipole interaction between the relevant atomic excited levels, shows reasonable agreement for the red wing of the self-absorption whereas it gives larger values by a factor of 3 for the blue tail of the main peak for the pair absorption.

Notes: We have developed a method for determining metal-atom number-density integrated over a line-of-sight (i.e., the column density) by measuring the optical depth in the wings of the pressure-broadened resonance lines. This method is capable of monitoring the column density in situ during photoelectric absorption measurement of metal vapors in a synchrotron radiation beamline. The present method requires measuring the reduced absorption coefficients of the metal–metal and metal–buffer-gas collisional quasimolecules γMM and γMG and the effective vapor length l before its use. We thus describe also the procedure for obtaining γMM, γMG, and l using He-buffered Yb vapor as a specific example.

Notes: The B KVV and Cl LVV normal and resonance Auger electron spectra in gaseous BCl3 have been observed with use of tunable photon beam from synchrotron radiation. The spectrum excited by photons with energy above the B K and the Cl L2,3 thresholds shows preferentially Cl LVV normal Auger bands. The pure B KVV normal Auger spectrum is obtained using the photons with energy between the B K threshold and the Cl L pre-edge excitation threshold. The spectator and participant Auger processes are observed at the B 1s→2a2‘(2pπB) and 1s→4e'(σBCl*) resonances. The spectator Auger processes are also observed in the Cl L2,3 excitation region, while the participant Auger processes are not significant in this region. The observed spectra are discussed with the aid of the one-electron properties of the valence orbitals.

Notes: Electron spectroscopy has been carried out to investigate spectator and participant resonance Auger decay processes following the B 1s→2a2‘ excitation in gaseous BF3 molecules using monochromatized synchrotron radiation. The resonance-enhanced satellite bands corresponding to the spectator Auger electron emission form six broad peaks showing good correspondence with the normal Auger bands. Resonance enhancement of the photolines corresponding to the participant Auger electron emission occurs only for the bonding orbitals having B character.

Notes: The spin–orbit selectivity of angle-resolved photoelectron spectra was used to provide new information on the electronic structure, symmetry, and decay dynamics of members of the autoionizing Tanaka–Ogawa Rydberg series in CO2. This represents the first time that spin–orbit selectivity has been used to obtain such information for a polyatomic molecule. The spin–orbit photoelectron branching ratios were used to show that the angular momentum quantum number λ of the excited Rydberg electron does not change upon autoionization. Furthermore, a consideration of the present results together with previous calculations of the relative intensities of the discrete and continuum ionization channels shows that the most probable electron configuration for the Tanaka–Ogawa Rydberg series is ...(πu)3(πg)4ndδg and that autoionization proceeds primarily via a dδg→εfδu process for the totally symmetric vibronic components of the ion. The asymmetry parameter β was determined for individual spin–orbit components of the various vibronic bands of the X˜ 2Πg state and is discussed in terms of recent theoretical calculations. The Rydberg series appears to be well described by Ωcω coupling, even for relatively low principal quantum numbers. The general utility of this technique for autoionizing Rydberg states and its extension to multiphoton ionization of Rydberg states that lie below the first ionization threshold are discussed.

Notes: Adenomatous hyperplasia, defined as a sizable parenchymal nodule in cirrhosis, was examined morphologically, Ninety-seven nodules of adenomatous hyperplasia were ained from 47 cirrhotic livers and were divided into ‘ordinary’ (44 nodules) and ‘atypical’ (53 nodules) types. The former consisted of hepatocytes similar to those of the surrounding liver, and showed regularly distributed portal tracts. The latter type was composed of hepatocytes showing nuclear atypia, relative to the surrounding liver, and showed irregular or sparse portal tracts. Atypical nodules were histologically heterogen, possessing areas of normo-trabecular, compact, pseudoglandular and/or scirrhous patterns. Several cytological changes, such as clear cell change, small or large cell change and fatty change, were intermingled variably within a given nodule. Atypical nodules showed expansive and/or replacing growth into the surrounding liver. Atypical hepatocytes also infiltrated into the fibrous septa and portal tracts. Foci of overt hepatocellular carcinoma were found in 11 of the 53 atypical nodules. These findings suggest that ordinary adenomatous hyperplasia may be a large-sized regenerative nodule, while atypical adenomatous hyperplasia may be a hepatocellular neoplasm, a peculiar form of low-grade hepatocellular carcinoma or borderline lesion, in which overt hepatocellular carcinoma is likely to evolve through multiple steps.
