Summary The crystal structure of synthetic covelline, CuS, was refined by least squares with photometric precession camera data. A finalR-value of 0.056 was obtained for 59 crystallographically independentF(hk.l). The essential features of the atomic arrangement, known since 1932, are confirmed. The 3-coordinated Cu(1) either occupies the position 2(d) in space groupP63/mmc and has a strongly anisotropic temperature factor, or its position is split parallel to [00.1] by 0.25(6) Å—in this case its temperature factor is approximately isotropic. The interatomic distance within the S2-group is 2.04(1) Å. The lowR-value indicates that the structure is well ordered.
