    Notes: Summary In the decerebrate cat, recordings were made from neurons in the caudal medullary raphe nuclei to determine if they responded to electrical stimulation of the vestibular nerve and thus might participate in vestibulo-sympathetic reflexes. Many of these cells projected to the upper thoracic spinal cord. The majority (20/28) of raphespinal neurons with conduction velocities between 1 and 4 m/s received vestibular inputs; 13 of the 20 were inhibited, and 7 were excited. Since many raphespinal neurons with similar slow conduction velocities are involved in the control of sympathetic outflow, as well as in other functions, these cells could potentially relay vestibular signals to sympathetic preganglionic neurons. The onset latency of the vestibular effects was long (median of 15 ms), indicating the inputs were polysynaptic. In addition, 34 of 42 raphespinal neurons with more rapid conduction velocities (6–78 m/s) also received long-latency (median of 10 ms) labyrinthine inputs; 26 were excited and 8 were inhibited. Although little is known about these rapidlyconducting cells, they do not appear to be involved in autonomic control, suggesting that the function of vestibular inputs to raphe neurons is not limited to production of vestibulosympathetic reflexes. One hypothesis is that raphe neurons are also involved in modulating the gain of vestibulocollic and vestibulospinal reflexes; this possibility remains to be tested.

    Notes: Summary As part of our studies of the spinal circuitry of the tonic neck reflex, we have recorded extracellularly from Ia reciprocal inhibitory neurons of the decerebrate, labyrinthectomized cat. The activity of a majority of neurons driven by stimulation of the quadriceps nerve was modulated by sinusoidal rotation of the neck; such modulation was much less frequent in the case of neurons driven by stimulation of nerves to more distal muscles. The results suggest that some of the inhibition which is part of the tonic neck reflex is mediated by Ia reciprocal inhibitory neurons, but that other pathways must also play an important role.

    Notes: Abstract Measurements of the specific heat of the amalgam LiHg 3 are reported between approximately 7 and 300 K, and of CdHg 3 between approximately 10 and 300 K. The results are believed to be correct within uncertainty limits of ±3% at 300 K, rising to approximately ±12% at the lowest temperatures. Before seeking the influence of the addition of lithium and cadmium atoms to an assembly of mercury atoms, the quasiharmonic approximation has been applied to earlier experimental thermodynamic data to calculate the maximum frequencies v D (n) of the Debye distributions having the samenth moments as the crystalline mercury lattice for − 3 ≤n ≤ 6. This was followed by assessments of high-temperature limiting values of the Debye characteristic temperatures, which were subsequently used to express results at finite temperatures in reduced form for comparative purposes. From a survey of these and structural data it is concluded that: (i) vibrations parallel to the unique axis of each structure are probably more important than those at right angles in determining the cohesive forces; (ii) increasing the mean mass of the constituent atoms of the lattice results in an overall reduction of the vibrational frequencies; (iii) such an increase of mass is also accompanied by a reduction of the temperature at which explicitly temperature-dependent anharmonic effects assume significant proportions; and (iv) the temperature dependences of these effects resemble one another in the three lattices.

    Notes: Abstract An experimental method is described which allows the shear modulus and Poisson's ratio of a polymer material to be determined as functions of temperature. Using commercial thermal mechanical analysis equipment, measurements are required of the thermal expansion coefficients of both unconstrained and constrained specimens, and of the Young's modulus. The constraint on a small disc-shaped polymer specimen is applied by a copper annulus. The basis of the method is that the apparent thermal expansion of the constrained specimen depends on the Poisson effect, and an analysis is given which enbles the Poisson's ratio to be determined. Some illustrative results are presented for a silicon rubber.

    Notes: Abstract The thermal expansion behaviour of several fibre-reinforced PEEK composites is assessed. It is shown that thermal expansion behaviour is consistent, and changes in a predictable manner with changes in fibre type. Using a composite manufactured such that no interfacial bonding took place, it is demonstrated that compressive forces caused by differential thermal contraction of fibre and matrix are sufficiently large to dominate behaviour in a direction parallel to the fibres. This suggests that PEEK composites should be resistant to changes in thermal expansion behaviour with repeated thermal cycling, and such resistance is demonstrated for AS4/PEEK (APC-2/AS4). It is shown that conventional models for predicting laminate response from unidirectional composite properties are valid for such materials, but it is also shown that the common analytical models for calculating transverse fibre behaviour from composite properties are inaccurate.

    Notes: Abstract The following account describes investigations of dimensional and stiffness characteristics of representative polyacrylic and silicone rubbers over the approximate temperature range 20 °C–175 °C. The results have led to a quantitative understanding of distinctive features in the behaviour of these elastomers, encountered during the course of their repeated use as tool materials in composite component manufacture, conforming with an explanation in terms of thermally induced cross-linking. It is concluded that silicone rubber offers more promise than polyacrylic rubber in applications where behavioural stability and a reasonable degree of control are required.

    Notes: Abstract Thermal conductivity experiments are reported on unidirectional composites over the temperature range −150 to 130 ° C. Results for R-glass/Fibredux 914 specimens, and for carbon fibre GY-80/Code 69 resin specimens, in directions parallel and perpendicular to the fibre directions have been interpreted using standard theories. Experiments were also made on specimens in which the carbon fibres made angles of 30 °, 45 ° and 60 ° to the temperature gradient. An attempt was made to understand these data using a finite difference model.
