Notes: Summary The study was carried out on a series of 42 patients who underwent surgery through a midline approach. Lesions were in the anterior part of the third ventricle in 32 cases, in the frontal horns in 6, in the trigone in 3, and in both lateral and thrid ventricles in 1 case. The third ventricle was approached through Monro's foramen in 22 cases and through an interfornicial route in 9 cases. Surgical mortality occurred in 2 cases (5%). Permanent morbidity occurred in another 2 cases (5%): it consisted of slight intellectual deterioration in one case and slight fixed pyramidal signs in the other. Transient mutism was the most frequently observed post-operative complication. Thirty-one patients were reviewed and submitted to neuropsy-chological tests in the late postoperative period to investigate the presence of intellectual deterioration or disturbances in the interhemispheric transfer of motor, somataesthetic and visual information. All patients showed only the presence of short-term memory disturbance. Furthermore, 12 patients tested before surgery also showed the presence of short-term memory deficits in the preoperative period. We conclude that a midline approach is the most direct and safe route to the third ventricle as well as to the frontal horns and trigone.

Notes: The system consists of a thin, transversely infinite horizontal fluid layer initially in mechanical but not thermostatic or speciestatic equilibrium. The top and bottom surfaces of the layer are assumed to be unconstrained, and the stability of the system to buoyancy driven finite amplitude roll cell disturbances is investigated. The system is capable of exhibiting both a subcritical stationary and oscillatory instability. The average vertical transport of heat and mass is computed and it is found that the convective transport associated with a stationary type of instability is much greater then that corresponding to an oscillatory instability.

Notes: Buoyancy-driven instability of a monocomponent or binary fluid which is completely contained in a vertical circular cylinder is investigated, including the influence of the Soret effect for the binary mixture. The Boussinesq approximation is used, and the resulting linear stability problem is solved using Galerkin's technique. The analysis considers various types of fluid mixtures, ranging from gases to liquid metals, in cylinders with a variety of radius-to-height ratios. The flow structure is found to depend strongly on both the cylinder aspect ratio and the magnitude of the Soret effect. Comparisons are made with experiments and other theories, and the predicted stability limits are shown to agree closely with observations.

Notes: The buoyancy-driven instability of a monocomponent or binary fluid that is completely contained in a vertical circular cylinder is investigated, including the influence of the Soret effect for the binary mixture. The Boussinesq approximation is used, and weakly-non-linear solutions are generated via Galerkin's technique using an expansion in the eigensolutions of the associated linear stability problem. Various types of fluid mixtures and cylindrical domains are considered. Flow structure and associated heat transfer are computed and experimental observations are cited when possible.

Notes: The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations - and their thermal convection and stratified flow analogue, the Boussinesq equations - possess solutions in bounded domains only when appropriate/legitimate boundary conditions (BCs) are appended at all points on the domain boundary. When the boundary - or, more commonly, a portion of it - is not endowed with a Dirichlet BC, we are faced with selecting what are called open boundary conditions (OBCs), because the fluid may presumably enter or leave the domain through such boundaries. The two minisymposia on OBCs that are summarized in this paper had the objective of finding the best OBCs for a small subset of two-dimensional test problems. This objective, which of course is not really well-defined, was not met (we believe), but the contributions obtained probably raised many more questions/issues than were resolved - notable among them being the advent of a new class of OBCs that we call FBCs (fuzzy boundary conditions).
