    Notizen: Summary A case with an ill-defined arteriovenous malformation in the parieto-occipital region is presented. Open surgery was unsuccessful in removing the AVM totally, and treatment with gamma knife radiosurgery was then attempted. At 14 months after this treatment the AVM was believed to be obliterated. The patient had a new intracranial haemorrhage 59 months after radiosurgery. Renewed angiography showed an obvious AVM outside the previously irradiated area. Retrospective analysis of the angiogram at 14 months after radiosurgery revealed early filling of a draining vein as a sign of residual AVM at this time. Renewed radiosurgical treatment was performed. It is believed that an ill-defined margin, laminar flow, and effects of previous surgery might add to difficulties in a proper visualisation and delineation of an AVM. Further, a small remaining shunt may be overlooked if the angiogram is not carefully analysed or if the angiogram is of inferior quality. It should be stressed that partial or almost total obliteration of an AVM is no protection against rebleeding.

    Notizen: Summary Rats were trained to perform a conditioned avoidance response to white noise in a conventional two-compartment “shuttle-box”. The partition between the compartments had two openings, however, and the correct passage (leftor right) was signalled by changes in background illumination. In this situation the psychotomimetic compoundsd-amphetamine (4 mg kg−1 IP) and phencyclidine (PCP) (2 mg kg−1 SC) were found to selectively disrupt the visual discrimination. Thed-amphetamine-induced abnormal behavior in this situation has previously been linked to excessive dopamine (DA) receptor stimulation, not controlled by nerve impulse flow and its regulation by important local feed-back mechanisms. Thus, the psychotomimetic effects produced by this compound should not only by due to increased DA receptor activationper se, but also to a disruption of normal patterns of firing and release in dopaminergic neurons. There is evidence to suggest that PCP via an excitatory amino acid (EAA) receptor produces a similar net effect on brain meso-limbic dopaminergic neurotransmission via an increased rate of firing, accompanied by regularization of firing (loss of burst activity). In support for a mediation of PCP-induced effects via EAA receptors, the local application of kynurenic acid into the ventral forebrain (4.7µg, bilaterally) was found also to produce a selective disruption of discriminative performance. It should be noted, however, thatd-amphetamine-induced loss of discriminative behavior, but not that induced by PCP, was antagonized by haloperidol (0.1–0.2 mg kg−1 IP) administration. It is thus possible that at least some effects of PCP in this situation are mediated on the efferent side of the dopaminergic neuron. It is suggested that the abnormal behavior, as evidenced by a loss of discriminative (but not avoidance) behavior, is due to disruption of normal, feed-back regulated, nerve impulse flow.

    Notizen: An attempt was made to improve the properties of filament wound glass fiber-epoxy composites by addition of carboxyl-terminated-butadiene-acrylonitrile (CTBN)-rubber to the matrix. The interlaminar GIc of unidirectional glass fiber-epoxy increased significantly with CTBN addition whereas the flexural strength decreased. The weepage stress in hoop loading of ±50 degree angle-ply pipes was higher for unmodified as compared with 10 phr CTBN-modified epoxy matrix pipes. However, the strain at weepage and the stress and strain at nonlinearity were higher for the pipes based on toughened epoxy. The reason for the lower weepage stress is that, although the toughened matrix pipes show higher resistance to cracking, their stiffness is lower. The addition of small amounts of CTBN-rubber (about 5 percent by weight is suggested) to the present epoxy matrix for filament winding can be done with only a minor increase in viscosity. This is a way of toughness enhancement for applications where the matrix stiffness reduction and increased moisture absorption are of minor importance.

    Notizen: A new technique was used to fabricate performed glass fiber/polypropylene GMTs. The method utilizes thermoplastic powder and fiber roving in a spray-up procedure in which a porous perform in fabricated, heated and molded. The objective was to compare the properties of various preformed GMT composition with two commercial GMTs and to relate the mechanical properties to the microstructure of the materials. Preformed GMTs were fabricated with various fiber lengths and with or without a fiber/matrix adhesion promotor. Processing observation, microstructure, tensile creep modulus, and tensile strength of these preformed GMTs are reported. Fiber length and the addition of a fiber/matrix adhesion promotor had generally little effect on the modulus and strength of the preformed GMT. Comparisons with two structurally different commercial GMTs also showed negligible effects on modulus and strength. The major reason for this is suggested to be the inhomogeneities of the materials. The mechanical properties are controlled by local inhomogeneities rather than by the general microstructure of the material. These inhomogeneities arise from the fiber arrangement in the semi-finished sheet or perform. Since the microstructure of preformed GMT can be controlled, this material is well suited for future studies on the effect of better fiber dispersion.
