Notes: Abstract In fusion reactions of58Ni beams with54Pe and58Ni target nuclei neutron deficient evaporation residues have been produced and separated from the beam in an electrostatic deflector with large acceptance. The recoil nuclei were implanted and detected in an array of 100 PIN photodiodes, where also their particle decays were recorded. The assignment of the 0.81 MeV proton line to the decay of109I could be experimentally proven by the observation, that it is followed by the 3.31 MeV alpha emission from108Te. A proton decay from112Cs was not observed. The decay energies of a number of known α emitters have been measured with better precision.

Notes: Summary A bending theory for thin shells undergoing finite deformations is presented, and its associated finite element model is described. The kinematic assumptions are of Reissner-Mindlin type. The formulation is based on the introduction of a mixed functional with independent in-plane rotation field and skew-symmetric part of membrane forces. The resulting Euler-Lagrangian equations yield the equilibrium of stress resultants and the couple resultant with respect to the surface normal. Furthermore, the equality of the independent rotation field with the displacement dependent rotation field is enforced. Hence, the symmetry of the stress resultants is fulfilled in a weak sence. Naturally, the development of a quadrilateral finite element includes drilling degrees of freedom. The displacement field is approximated using an Allman-type interpolation.

Notes: Abstract A numerical model for layered composite structures based on a geometrical nonlinear shell theory is presented. The kinematic is based on a multi-director theory, thus the in-plane displacements of each layer are described by independent director vectors. Using the isoparametric apporach a finite element formulation for quadrilaterals is developed. Continuity of the interlaminar shear stresses is obtained within the nonlinear solution process. Several examples are presented to illustrate the performance of the developed numerical model.

Notes: Abstract In the analysis of nonlinear elastic shells often the stability and postbuckling behaviour governs the response. Here we discuss problems which also include contact constraints. A nonlinear cylindrical shell element is derived directly from the associated shell theory using one point integration and a stabilization technique. Within a general solution algorithm a simple but effective branch-switching procedure is presented. Additional considerations allow the treatment of bifurcation problems with contact constraints. Several examples of beam and shell problems show the performance of the developed algorithms and elements.

Notes: Summary Fifteen xenograft tumour lines (4 osteosarcomas and 11 squamous carcinomas) were established on nude mice in numerous passages. Over a period of 4 years, samples were taken and studied systematically in more than 4000 histological slides. Of the tumour lines, 12 (4 osteosarcomas and 8 squamous carcinomas) showed remarkable dedifferentiation, but also redifferentiation towards a higher grade. There was a correlation between the rate of tumour takes in mice and poor prognosis in patients, but none between tumour doubling time and the phases of the cell cycle. Altogether, the results showed a great heterogeneity of human xenotransplants in terms of biological behaviour and morphological changes.

Notes: Summary It was shown in the present study that irradiation of a multiclonal tumor may destroy near-diploid cell clones preferentially, while the stemline with high DNA content continues to grow after temporary arrest. This experimental observation confirms recent clinical studies.
