    Notes: Interfacial tension is one of the most important parameters that govern the morphology of polymer blends and the quality of adhesion between polymers. However, few data are available on interfacial tension due to experimental difficulties. A pendant drop apparatus was used for the determination of the interfacial tension for the polymer pair polypropylene/polystyrene (PP/PS). The effects of temperature and molecular weight were evaluated. The range of temperatures used was from 178° to 250°C, and the range of molecular weights used was from 1590 to 400,000. The interfacial tension decreased linearly with increasing temperature. With only one exception, higher molecular weight systems showed weaker dependence of interfacial tension on temperature than lower molecular weight systems. Also, polydisperse systems showed a stronger dependency on temperature than the monodisperse systems. The value of the interfacial tension, which increases with molecular weight, appears to level off at molecular weights above the entanglement chain length. For the polymer pair PP/PS, the dependency of the interfacial tension on the number average molecular weight appears to follow the well-known semi-empirical (-2/3) power rule over most of the range of molecular weights. Comparable correlations were obtained with values of the power between -1/2 and -1.0.

    Notes: Hydroxyl terminated polybutadine (HTPB) based composite solid propellants have gained prominence in advanced missiles and launch vehicles including the Space Shuttle's Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) motor (1). To achieve a blow-hole free well performing casting, the knowledge of the processability characteristics and rheological behavior of the propellant slurry are of vital interest. In our earlier communication (2) we had discussed the effect of compositional aspects, namely solid loading, oxidizer particle size distribution, and aluminum content on the rheology of HTPB propellant. For an optimized solid loading with corresponding oxidizer particle size distribution and aluminium content, the effect of temperature on the processability and the pot life are studied and reported in this paper. This study establishes the fact that the HTPB slurry shows a complex rheological behavior having thixotropy and yield stress. The thixotropic index and yield stress show minimum values at an optimum temperature. This optimum temperature shifts to lower values as time elapses. Activation energies have been calculated for the cure reaction based on yield stress and viscosity. It is observed that the activation energy values reach asymptotic levels after about three hours of curative addition.

    Notes: The objective this work was to determine the effects of selected polyester catalysts on the reaction of a polyester with epoxy functional polymers. Polyesters containing various catalyst metals were melt blended with either an ethylene-co-glycidyl methacrylate or a styrene-co-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer. The viscosities of the blends were monitored as a function of mixing time using torque rheometry. In addition, the molecular weight distributions of selected samples were analyzed using gel permeation chromatography. Both the torque rheometry and the gel permeation chromatography results indicate that the polyester reacts with epoxy functional polymers. This reaction occurs under conditions and at processing times which are readily obtainable in conventional melt processing equipment. Furthermore, the reaction kinetics of polyesters with glycidyl methacrylate copolymers are dramatically affected by the nature of the catalyst system used to prepare the polyester. Under the conditions used, antimony catalysts are particularly effective at promoting the reaction between polyesters and the epoxy functionality and the activity of the catalysts studied appears to decrease in the following order: antimony 〉 gallium 〉 tin ≃ titanium 〉 germanium. Manipulation of the polyester catalyst system may offer a method to control the extent of reaction obtained in reactive processing of polyesters with epoxy functional compounds.

    Notes: Room temperature mechanical properties, such as flexural strength and impact resistance, of epoxies and graphite/epoxy composites go through a maximum as a function of epoxy conversion. For tetraglycidyl 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM)-4,4′-diamlnodiphenylsulfone (DDS) formulations, the recommended cure cycle prescribes a maximum temperature close to 177°C. The maximum extent of reaction that may be obtained at this temperature is determined from the vitrification curve. At this maximum conversion, balanced mechanical and physical properties are attained in the partially cured specimen. However, if the standard cycle is used to cure thick parts, the maximum temperature inside the sample increases beyond 177°C. This leads to a complete conversion in most of the part and a consequent impairment of resulting physical and mechanical properties. It is shown how numerical solutions of differential energy and mass balances may be used to propose alternative cure cycles such that the maximum conversion at every point remains bounded by the vitrification curve. An illustration for a particular thickness is provided.

    Notes: Three parametric sensitivity criteria were examined for application to a pseudohomogeneous tubular reactor system, in which both methanol dehydration (exothermic) and methanol dissociation (endothermic) were catalyzed. The addition of the endothermic reaction was shown to lead to a desensitized reactor. It was illustrated, however, that the relative activities of the two catalysts should be somewhat similar to maintain the overall conversion of the resulting reactor for a given residence time.The three criteria investigated tended to disagree with one another more, as the system was made less sensitive by the addition of more endothermic catalyst. A potential application of the resulting nonsensitive reactor design would be in methanol-fueled vehicles.

    Notes: Column chromatography and electrophoresis are combined in electrochromatography, where an electric potential is applied to a chromatography column in the axial direction. These studies utilized a dextran gel stationary phase and an eluent of low ionic strength, which were chosen to minimize electric current and therefore column heating and undesirable dispersion effects. The gel, with a small ion exchange capacity of several microequivalents per mL, turned out to be more conductive than the eluent and was able to concentrate macromolecules in the presence of combined electric and flow fields. The model presented describes solute retention due to electrically induced concentration polarization of solute on the resin surfaces, as well as electrophoresis in the mobile and stationary phases. The polarization effect explains differences between retention of high-molecular-weight solutes with exclusion coefficients of less than 1 and that of a charged low-molecular-weight solute, which is hypothesized to pass through the gel matrix in the presence of an electric field and does not experience concentration polarization. It also shows the application of this effect for protein separation in a liquid chromatography system with a superimposed electric potential.

    Notes: A novel perfectly mixed laboratory reactor for determining kinetics of heterogeneously catalyzed gas-phase reactions has been developed. Perfect mixing is achieved by circulating the gas in the reactor using an axial flow impeller in a well streamlined enclosure. Pellets are fixed in a rectangular opening in the blades of the impeller. They rotate with the impeller, thus realizing high particle velocities in the reactor. Interparticle mass transfer was studied experimentally by vaporization of naphthalene pellets. The mass-transfer coefficient in the novel reactor was found to depend on the velocity of a particle in the reactor. Mass-transfer coefficients in an internal recycle reactor at equal impeller tip speeds are 4-6 times lower than those in the novel reactor, and conditions can be chosen easily where at higher rotational speeds the mass- and heat-transfer rates are 8-10 times higher than in classical recycle reactors. The recycle flow rate in a recycle reactor was found to depend strongly on the resistance to flow caused by the catalyst bed itself. The novel reactor was tested under reacting conditions using the hydrogenation of ethene.

    Notes: Earlier work of Sinclair and Jackson on the flow of gas-particle suspensions in vertical pipes is extended to the case of ducts of arbitrary inclination. As a result of the compaction due to gravity, it is necessary to take into account forces transmitted between particles at points of sustained, rolling and sliding contact, and a simple frictional model of this contribution to the stress is introduced. The resulting theory is shown to predict fully developed flows with the qualitative features to be expected, even in horizontal ducts. The effects of flow rates, duct inclination, and duct width on the solution are explored.

    Notes: A strategy for the automatic synthesis of plant operating procedures, through the integration of artificial intelligence and mathematical modeling tools is discussed. This “predicative/numerical” modeling paradigm integrates qualitative and quantitative aspects of the problem in a same framework. It uses a “process-centered” qualitative modeling approach together with MILP optimization techniques to automatically generate operating strategies. The operation procedures network (OP-Net), formulated in terms of processes from a generic library, describes abstract (hardware-independent) processing paths leading to the desired operational goals. In this approach, the model assumptions, conservation expressions and data are described at the same level of abstraction, using the same formal representation. This permits the direct, automatic generation and modification of operation procedures in situations involving changes in basic assumptions and initial scenarios. Thus, flexibility, an essential feature of batch processing, is safeguarded.
