Notes: Abstract The electroantennogram responses of synthetic (−)-periplanone-B (PB) and (−)-periplanone-A (PA) were evaluated by using the antennae of the unmated male American cockroachPeriplaneta americana L. The threshold concentrations of the pheromone activities for the two chemicals were similar. Neither a synergistic nor an inhibitory response was noted, and only an additive effect was detected when PA and PB were applied as a mixture.

Notes: Three-dimensional Stokes flow through a thin screen which has a regular array of holes with two orthogonal axes of symmetry has been studied. The governing equation is simplified by the Roscoe potential and solved by an efficient eigenfunction expansion and collocation method. The resistance is found for circular and square holes in square arrays, and circular and hexagonal holes in triangular arrays.

Notes: A population-balance-equation model is employed for the analysis of liquid-liquid extraction columns. This model considers drop breakage, coalescence, and exit phenomena for the drop phase caused by drop-drop and drop-continuous phase interactions. Drop breakage and coalescence rates are employed from a previous study on liquid dispersions in stirred-tank contactors. A drop exit frequency is developed based on a stochastic modeling approach. The model is tested by drop size distribution and dispersed-phase volume fraction (holdup) data obtained for a multistage column contactor of pilot-plant scale. Steady-state drop size distribution and transient holdup measurements are obtained by a photomicrographic technique and an ultrasonic technique, respectively. The model can predict flooding of the column. The effect of mass transfer on the hydrodynamic parameters of the contactor is also examined. The population-balance-equation model can be used for the control of extraction columns and can be extended to include mass-transfer calculations for the prediction of extraction efficiency.

Notes: Abstract Collinear laser/molecular beam photodepletion spectroscopy has developed into a powerful tool for the determination of electronic absorption in neutral alkali metal clusters free of perturbing matrix effects. We briefly discuss the method, present data on selected Na x and Li y Na x−y ,x≤20, contrast measurements with the known optical response of larger colloidal metal clusters, compare microcluster spectra with the predictions of various models and speculate on future experimental and theoretical developments in this field.

Notes: A new microvelocity sensor unit was developed to measure the instantaneous velocity of a projectile during the penetration process. The concept of this device is based on the induced current generated in a coil resulting from the passage of a magnet. A special digital circuit was designed to yield a spatial resolution of better than 2.5 mm by elimiating the problem of signal overlap. The time delays obtained from these signals were used to determine the slowing down or energy loss of a high velocity projectile. A light gas gun was used to propel aluminum projectiles to velocities up to 320 m/s. Energy loss of these high velocity projectiles in composites reinforced with polyethylene, polyester, and graphite fabrics was investigated. Two distinct energy loss mechanisms were detected, one due to the actual fracture process and the other to the generation of frictional heat. Extensive delamination was observed in the more ductile PE and PET composites, but not in graphite. Low velocity instrumented drop-tower impact tests were also conducted, using identical specimens and similar impact geometries.
