    Notes: Abstract Leucocyte counts obtained from Wistar rats and CD1 mice following euthanasia with carbon dioxide were compared to leucocyte values obtained using other agents for anaesthesia or euthanasia. In rats, following euthanasia with carbon dioxide, lymphocyte and neutrophil counts in samples taken from the heart were significantly raised compared with sodium barbiturate euthanasia. In mice, following carbon dioxide, total leucocyte counts from brachial plexus were significantly lower than other collection sites. Lymphocyte counts from vena cava and brachial plexus were also significantly lower than other sites.

    Notes: Abstract A commercially available sodium lauryl sulphate reagent was used to determine haemoglobin values in three species, and these values were compared with results obtained by a cyanmethaemoglobin method with the same haematology analyser. Correlation of the two methods was satisfactory for samples obtained from healthy rats and dogs. For mouse samples, the correlation between methods was poorer than for the other two species.

    Notes: Graft copolymerization of collagen with N,N,N′,N′-tetra (2-hydroxypropyl) ethylene diamine methacrylate (THPEDM) was carried out in an aqueous medium using potassium persulfate as the radical initiator. Collagen-g-poly(THPEDM) was characterized by the percent yield and the copper chloride test. The percentage of grafting was determined as functions of concentration of monomer, concentration initiator, reaction time, and temperature.

    Notes: Higher chained alkyl cyanoacrylates have potential to function efficiently as space filling, hydrophobic, viscoelastic, biocompatible, and rapidly polymerizing bone adhesives. Hence they may be useful in applications where a void has to be filled, such as replacement of the intervertebral disc. To assess their applicability as space filling material in such an pplication, three alkyl cyanoacrylates; methoxyethyl cyanoacrylate, isobutyl cyanoacrylate, and isoamyl cyanoacrylate have been evaluated in this study. The bonding strength of these cyanoacrylates to bone in a space filling situation have been measured. The results indicate the bond strength of isoamyl cyanoacrylate (0.13 MPa) to be significantly (p 〈 0.05) lower compared with methoxyethyl cyanoacrylate (0.33 MPa) and isobutyl cyanoacrylate (0.37 MPa). There was no significant difference in the bond strengths of isobutyl cyanoacrylate and methoxyethyl cyanoacrylate.

    Notes: The effect of different treatments for preparing implant materials was examined by scanning electron microscopy and by contact angle measurements. The materials examined were Ti6Al4V alloy, Co-Cr-Mo alloy, Al2O3, and synthetic hydroxyapatite. Samples were prepared with solid or porous surfaces of these materials. These were detergent-cleaned and then either autoclaved (steam sterilization), radiationsterilized, nitric acid-etched, or plasmacleaned. The results of wettability studies indicated marked changes in surface energy corresponding to the different preparation methods, and differences in surface morphology were also observed. These differences could have significant consequences on in vivo implant behaviour as mediated by tissue-implant interactions.

    Notes: The tissue response to an implant may involve both physical and chemical factors. There is little reliable information on the effects of these parameters and the associated ionic release on the cell-material interaction because the majority of studies have not fully characterized the implant material. In this work surface spectroscopy using ISS, ESCA, and SIMS was carried out on Ti6A14V, Co-Cr-Mo, Al2O3, and hydroxyapatite dental implant materials that had been subjected to six commonly used preparative procedures. The results showed that each procedure generated an individualistic composition for the outermost surface of each material. These differences could be significant in cellular and tissue response. Improved understanding of these factors requires defined and reproducible surfaces.
