    Notes: The electrical activation of Ge and Se implanted into 〈100(approximately-greater-than) InP at elevated temperatures and the annealing of the implantation-induced disorder have been investigated by differential Hall/resistivity measurements, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, and transmission electron microscopy. At implantation temperatures below 170 °C, an amorphous layer is created by the implantation process. After recrystallization by rapid thermal annealing of the amorphized layer, a localized defect band was found, which gives rise to a dip (M shape) in the carrier density profile. This band is believed to be caused by a stoichiometric imbalance of In and P. For implantation temperatures above 170 °C, the samples remain crystalline during implantation and as a result, no localized defect band is observed.

    Notes: Density functional theory (DFT) has been applied to the study of the fluid–solid transition in systems with realistic potentials (soft cores and attractive forces): the purely repulsive WCA Lennard-Jones reference potential (LJT), the full Lennard-Jones potential (LJ) and the exponential-6 potential appropriate for helium and hydrogen. Three different DFT formalisms were used: the formulation of Haymet and Oxtoby (HO) and the new theories of Denton and Ashcroft (MWDA) and of Baus (MELA). The results for the melting pressure are compared with recent simulation and experimental data. The results of the HO version are always too high, the deviation increasing when going from the repulsive Lennard-Jones to the exponential-6 potential of H2. The MWDA gives too low results for the repulsive Lennard-Jones potential. At low temperatures, it fails for the full LJ potential while at high temperatures it is in good agreement. Including the attraction as a mean-field correction gives good results also for low temperatures. The MWDA results are too high for the exponential-6 potentials. The MELA fails completely for the LJT potential and the hydrogen exponential-6 potential, since it does not give a stable solid phase.

    Notes: Abstract. Leaching of nitrate from a sandy loam cropped with spring barley, winter wheat and grass was compared in a 4-year lysimeter study. Crops were grown continuously or in a sequence including sugarbeet. Lysimeters were unfertilized or supplied with equivalent amounts of inorganic nitrogen in calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) or animal slurry according to recommended rates (1N) or 50% above recommended rates (1.5N).Compared with unfertilized crops, leaching of nitrate increased only slightly when 1N (CAN) was added. Successive annual additions of 1.5N (CAN) or 1N and 1.5N (animal slurry) caused the cumulative loss of nitrate to increase significantly. More nitrate was leached after application of slurry because organic nitrogen in the slurry-was mineralized.With 1N (CAN) the leaching losses of nitrate were in the following order: continuous spring barley undersown with Italian ryegrass 〈 continuous ley of perennial ryegrass 〈 spring barley in rotation and undersown with grass 〈 perennial ryegrass grown in rotation = winter wheat grown in rotation 〈 sugarbeet in rotation 〈 continuous winter wheat 〈 continuous barley 〈 bare fallow.At recommended levels of CAN (1N), cumulative nitrate losses over the four years were similar for the crops when grown in rotation or continuously. When crops received 1.5N (CAN) or animal slurry, nitrate losses from the crops grown continuously exceeded those from crops in rotation. Including a catch crop in the continuous cropping system eliminated the differences in nitrate leaching between the two cropping systems.

    Notes: Specular reflectivity of neutrons and x rays can be used to determine the scattering length density profile of a material perpendicular to its surface. We have applied these techniques to study amorphous, diamondlike, hydrocarbon films. By the combination of these two techniques we obtain not only the mass density, but also the concentration of hydrogen, which varies in our case between 0 and 30 at. %. This method is a new and nondestructive way to determine the concentration of hydrogen within an error of less than 2 at. % in samples with sharp interfaces. It is especially suited for diamondlike carbon films.

    Notes: A computer-automated superconductive 55 GHz sampling oscilloscope based on 4 kA/cm2, Nb/Nb2O5/Pb edge Josephson junctions is presented. The Josephson sampler chip was flip-chip bonded to a carrier chip with a coplanar transmission line by use of a novel flip-chip bonding machine. A 5.6 ps step pulse was successfully coupled in to the transmission line and 18.5 GHz multiple reflections plus a parasitic oscillation at 43 GHz were observed.

    Notes: A description is given of a nondestructive method utilizing a microwave cavity for measuring the mass of high-speed pellets of solid hydrogen. The cavity is designed for use on a multishot pellet injector, where eight pellets are fired successively with trajectories being parallel and symmetrical around the injector axis. The cavity is cylindrical with the axis coinciding with the injector axis. When a pellet passes through the cavity through holes of 15–16 mm diameter, the change in resonant frequency is proportional to the pellet mass. As a result of the cylindrical symmetry the sensitivity will be identical for all pellets. The frequency shift is measured directly and is converted to a signal proportional to the size of the pellet. The cavity was calibrated with pellets of H2 and D2 containing around 6×1020 atoms and with velocities between 1200 and 1500 m/s. The sensitivity was found to be 300±15 mV/1020 atoms in both cases. This is in fair agreement with estimates made from the dielectric constants of solid H2 and D2. The cavity is built together with two optical detectors for time of flight measurements to form an integrated diagnostic unit.

    Notes: We report on pulsed laser deposition of YBa2Cu3O7−x in a diluted O2/Ar gas resulting in thin epitaxial films which are almost outgrowth-free. Films were deposited on SrTiO3 or MgO substrates around 800 °C at a total chamber pressure of 1.0 mbar, varying the argon partial pressure from 0 to 0.6 mbar. The density of boulders and outgrowths usual for laser deposited films varies strongly with Ar pressure: the outgrowth density is reduced from 1.4×107 to 4.5×105 cm−2 with increasing Ar partial pressure, maintaining a critical temperature Tc,zero≈90 K and a transport critical current density Jc(77 K)≥106 A/cm2 by extended oxygenation time during cool down.

    Notes: The voltage modulation depth of a high Tc dc-SQUID was measured at temperatures close to Tc and compared to a model by Enpuku et al. where the flux noise from the SQUID inductance is taken into account. The device was an YBa2Cu3O7 dc-SQUID made on a bicrystal substrate of SrTiO3. The design was of the Ketchen square-washer type with an inductance of 67 pH. Measurements were made in a temperature interval from 75 to 87 K, where the voltage modulation depth changed from 4.5 to 1.4 μV in close agreement with the model.

    Notes: A flow cryostat allowing independent cooling of eight pipe guns in a multishot deuterium pellet injector is described. The pipe guns are placed symmetrically around the flow cryostat and with a liquid helium consumption of 4–5 l/h the cooling is sufficient for simultaneous formation of eight pellets at 8–9 K with a diameter of 2.1 mm containing up to 8×1020 atoms/pellet. The thermal interaction between the eight pipe guns is sufficiently low to allow successive firing of the guns with time intervals of up to 1 s.

    Notes: We report on a computer algorithm capable of predicting the location of T-helper-cell epitopes in protein antigen (Ag) by analysing the Ag amino acid sequence. The algorithm was constructed with the aim of identifying segments in Ag which are resistant to proteolytic degradation by the enzymes cathepsin B, L, and D. These are prominent enzymes in the endocytic pathway through which soluble protein Ag enter APC, and resistant segments in Ag may, therefore, be expected to contain more T-cell determinants than susceptible segments.From information available in the literature on the substrate specificity of the three enzymes, it is clear that a cysteine is not accepted in any of the S2, S1, S1′, and S2' subsites of cathepsin B and L, and not in the S1 and S1' subsites of cathepsin D. Moreover, we have noticed that cysteine-containing T-cell determinants in a number of protein Ag are particularly rich in the amino acids alanine, glycine, lysine, leucine, serine, threonine, and valine. By searching protein Ag for clusters of amino acids containing cysteine and two of the other amino acids we were able to predict 17 out of 23 empirically known T-cell determinants in the Ag with a relatively low number of false (positive) predictions.Furthermore, we present a new principle for searching Ag for potential amphipatic α-helical protein segments. Such segments accord well with empirically known T-cell determinants and our algorithm produces a lower number of false positive predictions than the principle based on discrete Fourier transformations previously described.
