    Notes: Spheromak technology is exploited to create laboratory simulations of solar prominence eruptions. It is found that the initial simulated prominences are arched, but then bifurcate into twisted secondary structures which appear to follow fringing field lines. A simple model explains many of these topological features in terms of the trajectories of field lines associated with relaxed states, i.e., states satisfying ∇×B=λB. This model indicates that the field line concept is more fundamental than the flux tube concept because a field line can always be defined by specifying a starting point whereas attempting to define a flux tube by specifying a starting cross section typically works only if λ is small. The model also shows that, at least for plasma evolving through a sequence of force-free states, the oft-used line-tying concept is in error. Contrary to the predictions of line-tying, direct integration of field line trajectories shows explicitly that when λ is varied, both ends of field lines intersecting a flux-conserving plane do not remain anchored to fixed points in that plane. Finally, a simple explanation is provided for the S-shaped magnetic structures often seen on the sun; the S shape is shown to be an automatic consequence of field line arching and the parallelism between magnetic field and current density for force-free states. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A pinhole soft x-ray imaging camera is being developed for use on the Caltech solar prominence simulation experiment and also the Caltech spheromak experiment. The camera is based upon a commercial gated intensifier which produces an image on a phosphor screen. Moderate signal level, excellent time resolution, and reasonable imaging have been obtained, but there has not been any determination of the x-ray energy spectrum. An estimation of the spectrum is now underway using filtered AXUV diodes and it is expected that knowledge of the x-ray energy will enable further optimization of the camera.© 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract. Leaching of nitrate from a sandy loam cropped with spring barley, winter wheat and grass was compared in a 4-year lysimeter study. Crops were grown continuously or in a sequence including sugarbeet. Lysimeters were unfertilized or supplied with equivalent amounts of inorganic nitrogen in calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) or animal slurry according to recommended rates (1N) or 50% above recommended rates (1.5N).Compared with unfertilized crops, leaching of nitrate increased only slightly when 1N (CAN) was added. Successive annual additions of 1.5N (CAN) or 1N and 1.5N (animal slurry) caused the cumulative loss of nitrate to increase significantly. More nitrate was leached after application of slurry because organic nitrogen in the slurry-was mineralized.With 1N (CAN) the leaching losses of nitrate were in the following order: continuous spring barley undersown with Italian ryegrass 〈 continuous ley of perennial ryegrass 〈 spring barley in rotation and undersown with grass 〈 perennial ryegrass grown in rotation = winter wheat grown in rotation 〈 sugarbeet in rotation 〈 continuous winter wheat 〈 continuous barley 〈 bare fallow.At recommended levels of CAN (1N), cumulative nitrate losses over the four years were similar for the crops when grown in rotation or continuously. When crops received 1.5N (CAN) or animal slurry, nitrate losses from the crops grown continuously exceeded those from crops in rotation. Including a catch crop in the continuous cropping system eliminated the differences in nitrate leaching between the two cropping systems.

The temporal relationship between the myocardial arteriovenous difference of plasma propranolol concentration and heart rate and left ventricular dp/dt maximum was examined for 30 min after intravenous administration of 10mg (0.04 mmol) dl-propranolol in nine patients with ischaemic heart disease.2. Very large positive myocardial a.v. differences of propranolol within the first 5 min became negative after 5 min, indicating a rapid, avid uptake with subsequent release of propranolol from the heart.3. The heart rate and left ventricular dp/dt maximum increased 1 min after propranolol administration and did not change after the fifth min of the observation period.4. The data suggest that a large number of unspecific binding sites for propranolol are present in the heart in addition to the specific β-receptors.

    Notes: Abstract 4-p-Methoxy-phenylimino-3-hydroxyimino-2-pentanone has been synthesized, characterized by elemental analysis. IR, NMR and mass spectroscopies and its structure determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P212121, witha=7.2294(7),b=11.540(1),c=14.670(2) Å. Spectroscopic and X-ray data clearly indicate that the oxime tautomer is present. In the solid state, the geometrical isomer is the EZ, which is also the main species in solution according to NMR data. The two C=N bonds are not conjugated to each other.

    Notes: The aggregation properties of zinc-free insulin have been studied using static and dynamic light scattering. The aggregation has been investigated as a function of three parameters, the concentration of sodium chloride (in the range 10-100 mM), the pH value (in the range pH 7.5-10.5), and the insulin concentration (1.8-13.4 mg/mL). The measured homodyne autocorrelation function was used to determine the apparent mean hydrodynamic diameter as well as the apparent weight-averaged molar mass of the insulin species in solution. A method of data analysis was employed, which allows the separation of light scattering contributions from the insulin oligomers and from irrelevant macromolecules and possible impurities present in the sample solutions. Also, a simple phenomenological equilibrium model describing the association of oligomers of insulin is presented. One aspect of this model is that it makes it possible to determine weight average molar masses corrected for virial effects on the Rayleigh ratio. This was necessary because virial effects cannot be isolated and corrected for by dilution since this would change the equilibrium distribution of oligomers. The basis of the model is a positive contribution to Gibbs free energy from charge repulsion depending on the protein charge and the number of monomers in the oligomers, and an assumed constant negative contribution to Gibbs free energy arising from either an entropic gain or hydrogen bonding upon association. The equilibrium model gives a good description of both the apparent weight average molar masses and the apparent hydrodynamic diameters, when the effect of the insulin concentration is taken into account by including virial effects arising from charge-charge repulsion (Donnan effect). The result shows that the association of insulin as a function of pH and ionic strength can be described by an effective charge equal to the charge derived from proton titration reduced by the number of sodium ions binding to insulin. At the lowest pH and highest salt concentration (pH 7.5, 100 mM NaCl, 12 mg/mL insulin), the weight average molar mass is close to that of the hexamer, and at the highest pH and lowest salt concentration (pH 10.5, 10 mM NaCl, 1.9 mg/mL), the weight average molar mass is close to that of the monomer. In all cases, however, a distribution of oligomers is present with a relative Gaussian width of about 30%. Neglecting the positive term in Gibbs free energy, an upper bound to the association constant for insulin can be calculated: The negative term in Gibbs free energy corresponds to an association constant of (0.8 ± 0.3)·105M-1, which is in agreement with published values for the monomer-to-monomer association. The satisfactory agreement between theory and experiments for the weight average molar mass suggests that it should be possible to predict the aggregational properties of mutant forms of insulin. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
