    Notes: Sera from 27 birch pollen-allergic patients who had undergone hyposensitization treatment for 22–41 months were studied by immunoblotting before and after therapy, whereby the levels of IgE, IgG and IgG1–4 antibodies directed against the major allergen Bet v I and minor allergens of birch pollen were monitored. The clinical benefit of immunotherapy (IT) was evaluated using a symptom specific questionnaire. In patients with good clinical response (responders, n=18), as defined by improvement of symptoms, anti-Bet v I IgE antibodies were found to decrease in 10/18 patients (55.5%), whereas in 6/18 (33.3%) no change and in two cases (11.2%) an increase of specific IgE was observed. In the group of patients with unsatisfactory clinical outcome (non-responders, n=9), 3/9 patients (33.3%) showed a decrease, 3/9 (33.3%) no change and 3/9 (33.3%) an increase in levels of IgE antibodies directed against Bet v I. In the case of minor allergens, 5/18 responders (27.7%) and 8/9 non-responders (88.8%) showed specific IgE before IT. In the responder group, no increase of specific IgE could be observed after IT. In non-responders, however, an increase of IgE directed against minor allergens was seen in 3/9 patients (33.3%). In all patients, regardless of therapeutical success, IT-induced elevated levels of specific IgG, IgG1 and in particular IgG4 directed against Bet v I vere found. Regarding minor allergens, a heterogeneous pattern of IgG responses without significant correlation to clinical benefit was observed. Our results indicate that changes in IgG reactivity patterns against Bet v I and minor allergens, as shown by the immunoblot technique, did not correlate with good or bad clinical outcome.

    Notes: A configuration is described to measure the effect of the plasma produced by an arcjet thruster on a reflector antenna. The diagnostic consists of a small movable rf probe coupled to a Hewlett–Packard 8510 network analyzer. Because the perturbation is expected to be small (〈10° phase shift), wall reflections are an important consideration. To minimize their effect we use Fourier transform gating techniques.

    Description / Table of Contents: Contents Providing a few idealistic assumptions it is possible to get an analytic solution for the distribution of the magnetic field of a toroid with any rotation-symmetrical cross-section. Thus general expressions for forces, tensions and inductivitycoefficients can be derived. With the aid of these terms optimizations of the cross-section, with respect to the tension in the conductor, the length of the conductor and the surface of the toroid, are executed. Basic correlations and influences on building- and running-costs of a superconducting toroid that is able to store electrical energy directly, are explained.
    Notes: Übersicht Unter Voraussetzung einiger Idealisierungen kann eine analytische Lösung für den Magnetfeldverlauf in einem Toroiden mit beliebigem, rotationssymmetrischen Querschnitt angegeben werden. Damit können allgemein die auftretenden Kräfte und Zugspannungen sowie die Induktivität des Torus berechnet werden. Mit Hilfe dieser Ausdrücke werden Optimierungen des Querschnitts bezüglich der Leiterlängszugspannung, der eingesetzten Leiterlänge und der Torusoberfläche durchgeführt. Grundlegende Zusammenhänge und Einflüsse auf die Herstellungs- und Betriebskosten eines supraleitenden Toroiden zur direkten Speicherung von elektrischer Energie werden erläutert.

Dieses mechanische Optimum ist identisch mit der optimalen Ausnutzung einer gegebenen Leiterlänge zum Energieeinschluß. Für idealisierte Feldverhältnisse wurden diese Sachverhalte bereits beschrieben. Im vorliegenden Aufsatz werden exakte, halbanalytische Feldberechnungsmethoden mit einem relativ geringen Aufwand an Rechenzeit angegeben. Ein neuer numerischer Optimierungsalgorithmus bezüglich der Leiterlängszugspanung wird entwickelt. Weiterhin wird das methodische Vorgehen zur Bestimmung der Induktionskoeffizienten aufgezeigt.
    Notes: Contents The optimization of a toroid shape with respect to the tension acting on a turn yields a shape similar to the letter D. This mechanical optimum corresponds with the optimum intrinsic energy of a given length of wire in a toroidal construction. Provided idealized field distribution, these facts have been described before. In the present paper exact semi-analytic methods for field calculation are given. They require a relatively small computing time. A new numerical algorithm for optimization of the shape with respect to the tension is developed. Furthermore a method to determine inductance coefficients of toroidal arrangements is described.
