    Notes: In rat sciatic nerve, the 7-dehydrocholesterol content decreased dramatically during the postnatal period and slowly during adulthood and aging. In contrast, the 7-dehydrodesmosterol content peaked at 14 days and was nearly undetectable after 60 days. The desmosterol content peaked at 21 days and was nearly undetectable after 1 year. The cholesterol content increased up to 21 days and remained nearly constant thereafter. In brain (in contrast to sciatic nerve), 7-dehydrodesmosterol and desmosterol contents decreased dramatically during development and slightly during adulthood and aging; the 7-dehydrocholesterol content peaked at 21 days and remained constant during aging. Only 7-dehydrocholesterol was dramatically more concentrated in PNS than in CNS. In brain, the cholesterol/7-dehydrocholesterol ratio increased during development and remained stable after 6 months. In contrast, in sciatic nerve, this ratio continuously increased during development and aging (950-fold between 5 days and 18 months). Thus, the cholesterol/7-dehydrocholesterol ratio is a useful biochemical index of development and aging in the PNS.

    Notes: Abstract: In contrast to brain, the scialic nerve concentration of vitamin E in rats increased rapidly during the postnatal period (approximately fivefold between days 1 and 8), then decreased dramatically (about twofold between days 8 and 30), and further decreased slowly between days 30 and 60 and remained constant up to 2 years. Although the sciatic nerve concentration of vitamin E decreased by 58% between days 8 and 30, the concentration of vitamin E in serum presented a marked decrease (∼75%). The vitamin E concentrations varied in a similar pattern in whole sciatic nerve and in endoneurium and showed a very close correlation (r= 0.94). The age-related changes in fatty acid concentration of the endoneurial fraction of the sciatic nerve were characterized by a large increase in content of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids up to 6 months (twofold for saturated and fourfold for monounsaturated fatty acids). Then, up to 24 months, the amount of these fatty acids decreased very slowly. The content of (n-6) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) decreased rapidly up to 1 year and slowly afterward. In contrast, during development the amount of (n-3) PUFA was relatively stable and decreased during aging. A highly significant correlation between vitamin E and (n-6) PUFA [18:2(n-6), 20:4(n-6), and total (n-6)) was observed but not between (n-3) PUFA and vitamin E. It is suggested that there may be a relationship between vitamin E and (n-6) PUFA in the PNS membranes during development and aging.

    Notes: Abstract Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh (Ulvophyceae, Caulerpales) is an alga of tropical origin that was accidentally introduced into the Mediterranean sea in 1984, where this species can reach an abundance that has never been described in tropical endemic regions. It is known that caulerpacean algae can develop an efficient strategy against grazers consisting of the synthesis of repulsive of toxic secondary metabolites: we report here the first study of the toxicity of purified secondary metabolites and raw extracts fromC. taxifolia from the Mediterranean. Toxicity was evaluated on three models: mice (lethality), mammalian cells in culture (cytotoxicity) and sea urchin eggs (disturbance of cell proliferation). Aqueous extracts are only active on fibroblasts and mice. In the three toxicity models a seasonal variation of toxicity is observed for the crude methanol extract as well as a decrease of this activity whenC. taxifolia from the Mediterranean is kept in aquaria. Pure compounds exhibit different toxicity depending on the assay. 10,11-epoxycaulerpenyne is the most active substance on mice and fibroblasts whereas taxifolial A and D are inactive or only weakly toxic. Among the four tested compounds caulerpenyne, the major metabolite ofC. taxifolia, is the most active on sea urchin eggs. Caulerpenyne may therefore represent an ecological risk for microorganisms and the eggs of multicellular animals living close to this alga. The ecological impact of this toxicity on marine organisms and the interaction of this alga with the herbivorous fauna are discussed.

    Notes: Pulmonary lymphatic vessels extend within the connective tissue sheets surrounding airways and blood vessels. Frequently in this location they also border the lobular parenchyma, but no lymphatic vessels have been found within intralobular compartments between blood capillaries and alveoli. The presence and distribution of lymphatic vessels in pulmonary tissue are consistent with an important role for the lymphatic system in the clearance of interstitial fluids in the lung. Pulmonary lymphatic channels have structural characteristics of initial lymphatics; their walls are formed only by an endothelial layer, and no muscular cells are present. A network of anchoring filaments and collagen and elastic fibers surrounds the vessel walls. Because the lung is a mobile organ the tissue undergoes compression and distension during respiratory phase. These modifications could have a role in the mechanisms for lymph formation and flow. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Tantalum silicide films of ∼200 nm thick and composition TaSi2 were obtained by co-sputtering in a Varian 3120 S-gun magnetron system. The films were then introduced in an AES spectrometer and bombarded with Ar+ ions of different energies in order to obtain surfaces of different compositions as a consequence of preferential sputtering effects and their dependence on the energy of the primary ions. Lowering the energy of the Ar+ ions resulted in surfaces very rich in tantalum. The interactions of these surfaces with oxygen at low pressures (10-8-10-5 Torr) and at room temperature then have been studied comparatively by Auger electron spectroscopy. Reference experiments with pure Si and Ta allowed the comparison with those of the different silicide surfaces. It is found that the oxygen uptake depends on the Ta content so that the richer in Ta the surface is, the higher the O2 incorporation. Furthermore, the uptake rate at the different TaSix surfaces resembles better the measured rate for pure Ta than that observed for pure Si. It has been observed also that the oxidation of Si is enhanced over that of pure silicon in all the surfaces studied here. Besides, the enhancement depends on the tantalum content.
