    Notes: The use of new products in building and public works is increasing, among them being special floor coverings containing epoxy resins and derivatives. These are used principally in heavily frequented areas, such as shopping precincts, hospitals, civic centres, etc., due to their high resistance to wear and tear, environmental factors, etc. In the last 2 years, we have studied 15 cases of men sensitized to epoxy resin, or derivatives, who worked with special floorings. Speed of sensitization, severity of lesions, and localization to the hands, face and legs were characteristic.

    Notes: Abstract: The expression of somatostatin mRNA was investigated in rat pineal cells after 1 week in culture, using reverse transcription of mRNA into cDNA and the polymerase chain reaction. The positive expression in cultured pineal cells demonstrates the capacity of this gland to synthesize somatostatin in denervated cells. Thus, apart from the neural origin of pineal somatostatin, which has been described in detail in the bovine species, a parenchymal source is demonstrated.

    Notes: Abstract Denitrification losses from a poorly drained clayey loamy soil under natural pasture were measured over a two-year period using the acetylene inhibition technique. Plots received two different applications of fertilizer as calcium ammonium nitrate or cow slurry (a total of 145–290 kg N ha−1 in 1991 and 120–240 kg in 1992). In the first year, N losses in the mineral treatments were about 4 times greater than losses in the slurry treatments. In the second year losses in the slurry treatments increased in such a way that losses in the higher slurry application became similar to those for the two mineral treatments. Soil nitrate was the factor producing differences between treatments. In this way, N mineralization in periods between fertilizations coinciding with high soil water contents was responsible in the second year for the increase in N losses in the slurry treatments. Denitrification rates greater than 0.1 kg N ha−1 day−1 occurred at soil water contents 〉 33 % (air filled porosity 〈 26 %) and soil nitrate contents 〉 1 mg N kg−1 dry soil. Spring and autumn were the seasons of highest risk of denitrification because of N fertilizations coinciding with periods of soil saturation with water. Winter losses were low, but this is a period when there is a risk of denitrification in wetter seasons, particularly for a slurry application management.

    Notes: Summary Diurnal profiles of the content of immunoreactive somatostatin (IRS) in the male and female rat pineal, Harderian gland and retina have been studied. Supplementary experiments have been performed to elucidate a possible effect of infradian cycles, namely estrous and seasonal cycles, and continuous dark on IRS concentration. Results demonstrate that the IRS content in the rat pineal gland, Harderian gland and retina is submitted to diurnal variations, but not under all studied conditions. A sexual dimorphism exists between male and female animals: male rats showed higher IRS content in pineal (103.8±4.7 vs 32.3±1.8pg IRS/gland), but lower in retina (1,362.1±82.7 vs 2,176±102.2± pg IRS/mg of protein) and Harderian gland (10.3±0.8 vs 30.6±3.5 pg IRS/mg of protein). Additionally, seasonal differences appeared: in male and female animals pineal IRS content was lower in spring than in November. This decrease also appeared in female retina IRS concentration. Estrous cycle did not seem to change IRS content in the three studied tissues. Finally, pineal IRS rhythm persisted after continuous dark for a week. These results demonstrate, in the rat, sexual differences in the IRS content of the various tissues studied and suggest a physiological role for somatostatin, possibly related to seasonal adaptation.
