    Notes: Vitiligo, a skin disease, characterized by the spontaneous loss of melanin, has been described in several animals as well as in humans. Most of the reports of large domestic animals have dealt with clinical investigations without morphological data. In this report, the histological and ultrastructural characteristics of two cases of vitiligo in water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) are presented. Interestingly, many of the ultrastructural observations for vitiliginous buffaloes resemble those previously described for other species, e.g., humans, mouse, and chicken. These data suggest that one or more forms of human vitiligo may have a similar etiopathogenesis to that of the buffalo. Therefore, it is proposed that vitiliginous buffalo may prove to be a useful animal model for the human disease.

    Notes: Composite bioceramic materials could find use in a wide range of biomedical applications; however, their processing technologies are quite complex or not sufficiently developed. In order to eliminate deleterious influences of powder inhomogeneities and to reduce the machining time of final components, a novel procedure for multiphase powders using wet pretreatment and direct forming of green bodies having the desired geometries was studied. During the experimental work alumina, yttria-stabilized zirconia, and their mixtures were used. The forming of discs and femoral heads was done by pressure casting of aqueous suspensions of powders. The measurements of physical, mechanical and tribological properties of sintered samples were performed; the results obtained showed the effectiveness of the process since the property values approached those of similar materials actually on the market, while requiring less machining labour.

    Notes: Abstract The Galileo ultraviolet spectrometer experiment uses data obtained by the Ultraviolet Spectrometer (UVS) mounted on the pointed orbiter scan platform and from the Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer (EUVS) mounted on the spinning part of the orbiter with the field of view perpendicular to the spin axis. The UVS is a Ebert-Fastie design that covers the range 113–432 nm with a wavelength resolution of 0.7 nm below 190 and 1.3 nm at longer wavelengths. The UVS spatial resolution is 0.4 deg × 0.1 deg for illuminated disc observations and 1 deg × 0.1 deg for limb geometries. The EUVS is a Voyager design objective grating spectrometer, modified to cover the wavelength range from 54 to 128 nm with wavelength resolution 3.5 nm for extended sources and 1.5 nm for point sources and spatial resolution of 0.87 deg × 0.17 deg. The EUVS instrument will follow up on the many Voyager UVS discoveries, particularly the sulfur and oxygen ion emissions in the Io torus and molecular and atomic hydrogen auroral and airglow emissions from Jupiter. The UVS will obtain spectra of emission, absorption, and scattering features in the unexplored, by spacecraft, 170–432 nm wavelength region. The UVS and EUVS instruments will provide a powerful instrument complement to investigate volatile escape and surface composition of the Galilean satellites, the Io plasma torus, micro- and macro-properties of the Jupiter clouds, and the composition structure and evolution of the Jupiter upper atmosphere.

    Notes: Abstract Starting from three different commercial powders, AIN materials were densified by pressureless sintering under various temperature and time values in order to investigate the influence of microstructure on thermal conductivity. The influence of the sintering aids (3 wt% Y2O3 and 2 wt% CaC2) and of the forming processes (cold isostatic pressing and thermocompression of tape cast pieces) were also been evaluated. Thermal conductivity increased with the purity level of the starting powder and with an increasing the sintering temperature and soaking time. The highest thermal conductivity values (196 Wm−1 K−1) were obtained with the purest powder and high temperature (1800 °C) sintering over long periods (6 h). No influence on thermal conductivity was detected from the forming technique.
