    Notes: Vitiligo, a skin disease, characterized by the spontaneous loss of melanin, has been described in several animals as well as in humans. Most of the reports of large domestic animals have dealt with clinical investigations without morphological data. In this report, the histological and ultrastructural characteristics of two cases of vitiligo in water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) are presented. Interestingly, many of the ultrastructural observations for vitiliginous buffaloes resemble those previously described for other species, e.g., humans, mouse, and chicken. These data suggest that one or more forms of human vitiligo may have a similar etiopathogenesis to that of the buffalo. Therefore, it is proposed that vitiliginous buffalo may prove to be a useful animal model for the human disease.

    Notes: Abstract— A study of the dependence of the fracture toughness on the microstructural morphology of polycrystalline materials is presented. The microstructure of several aluminas was characterized by thermal etching and image analysis. The fracture toughness of these materials was then determined by bridge-indentation pre-cracking followed by a four-point bending test procedure. A SEM investigation of the mechanisms of crack propagation was also carried out. The observed microstructure-related fracture toughness responses are discussed.

    Notes: Fired microstructures of standard porcelain stoneware tile and tile made from mixes containing waste glass as part of the flux system were studied by XRD, SEM, and TEM. The standard porcelain stoneware microstructure consists of 100–1000 μm long mullite needles, feldspar relics, and partially dissolved α-quartz embedded in a glassy matrix. The use of soda–lime–silica (SLS) glass in the flux system led to crystallization of plagioclase, wollastonite, and sodium silicates. CaO-rich areas adjacent to quartz particles, as a result of interactions between SLS glass and silica from the quartz, and eutectic morphologies, revealed that SLS glass accelerated liquid formation and thus sintering and densification. Formation of these additional phases led to lower levels of quartz, mullite, and Na-feldspar in the microstructure although lower firing temperatures could be used to achieve full density due to generation of more fluid liquid. Use of PbO-containing waste glasses had little effect on the microstructure compared with standard composition while use of mixed PbO-containing and SLS glasses led to microstructures containing plagioclase but to lower extent than in tile with higher levels of SLS.

    Notes: Crystals of alcohol dehydrogenase from Sulfolobus solfataricus were grown in the Advanced Protein Crystallization Facility during the Life and Microgravity Sciences Spacelab mission on the US Space Shuttle. Large diffracting crystals were obtained by dialysis, whereas only poor-quality crystals were obtained by vapour diffusion. The quality of both the microgravity and ground-based crystals was analysed by X-ray diffraction. There was some improvement in terms of size and diffraction resolution limit for the microgravity crystals. However, the twinning observed in the Earth-grown crystals was also present for those grown in microgravity.

    Description / Table of Contents: Resumé Cet article décrit les caractéristiques des sols constitués de ponces dans la région du Vésuve et discute les différents essais concernant le comportement de ces sols vis-à-vis de l'eau dans un certain nombre de sites différents. L'attention est attirée sur la présence de vides inter aussi bien qu'intraparticulaires et les auteurs proposent des modifications du diagramme traditionnel des phases solide-eau-air pour tenir compte de ces phénomènes. L'importance d'une bonne compréhension de la structure de ces sols et de leur comportement vis-à-vis des circulations d'eau est illustrée a l'aide d'exemples de glissements et de travaux de confortement.
    Notes: Abstract  This paper describes the characteristics of pumice soils from the area of Mount Vesuvius and discusses sinking, watering and other geotechnical tests on pumice from a number of sites. Attention is drawn to the presence of both inter- and intra-particle voids within this material and appropriate modifications to the standard solid-water-air phase diagram are suggested to take account of this. The importance of understanding the structure of the pumice and its response to rainfall/ground water conditions is discussed in relation to both landslips and stabilisation works.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé L'utilisation de la géométrie fractale a permis de déterminer certaines caractéristiques de matériaux tels que des sols argileux et des dépôts de ponces. En particulier, les surfaces spécifiques de quelques argiles de l'Italie du Sud et de ponces apportées par l'éruption du Vésuve de 79 a.d. ont été déterminées. L'analyse réalisée donne la dimension de Minkowski de ces sols, nombre sans dimension. Les valeurs de dimension de Minkowski ont été comparées avec des valeurs dérivées de méthodes physiques (porosimétrie au mercure et BHT). Les analyses réalisées prouvent que, dans la gamme, des grossissements utilisés, les matériaux examinés se comportent comme des ensembles irréguliers ou fractals.
    Notes: Abstract  This paper describes the use of fractal geometry in determining the characteristics of some geological media, such as clayey and pumice soils. Attention is drawn to the determination of the specific surface of some clays of southern Italy and of pumice of the Vesuvius eruption of 79 a.d. The analysis proposed gives the Minkowski dimension of soils expressed by the power law, or the equation Mδ(F)≈Cδ–s; this is a dimensionless number. The values of Minkowski dimension obtained have been compared with the values obtained by physical methods (mercury porosimetry and the bottle helium test). The analyses conducted prove that, for the range of magnification adopted, the media examined behave as irregular or fractal sets.
