Notes: We prepare hysteresis model that reproduces smooth hysteresis curves including minor loops from several experimental hysteresis loops. In this model, the distribution of susceptibility on the M-H plane obtained from the experimental hysteresis loops is used. The hysteresis loop in the demagnetizing process is computed with this model, and found to converge on the original point of the M-H coordinates. The computed hysteresis curves including minor loops agree well with the experimental results. In addition, the present hysteresis model is used for a numerical analysis of magnetic fields with the spatial network method. In this simulation, the magnetization and magnetic fields inside and outside an infinite magnetic cylinder in an external pulse field are obtained. The results are in fair agreement with theoretical results.

Notes: The magnetic behavior of a chain of N disks are investigated. The critical field Hcri for the discontinuous jump of the magnetization and the coercive force Hc for the fanning mechanism, and the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy constant Ku are estimated as a function of N, the aspect ratio of the disks, and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant K1. By comparing the MH loops calculated and the experiments, the values of K1 and N are obtained for an assembly with random orientation of Ba ferrite particles. This value of K1 agrees well with the experimental results obtained by Fujiwara [IEEE Trans. Magn. MAG-23, 3125 (1987)].

Notes: The magnetization curling mode for an infinite cylinder with a uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy is considered. The angular dependence of the nucleation field HN and the coercive force Hc are estimated as a function of the radius, the magnetocrystalline anisotropy, and the inclination of the axis to the applied field. It is assumed that only curling and rotation in unison occur, and that the discontinuous jump by the curling mode brings the magnetization to the lower energy state given by Stoner–Wohlfarth. With this assumption, the rotational hysteresis loss Wr and integral Rh are evaluated both for an aligned and for a random assembly of infinite cylinders.

Notes: We report a 39-year-old patient with a huge connective tissue naevus on his back, in association with pseudo-Hurler polydystrophy (mucolipidosis III). As far as we are aware, this is the first report of the coexistence of these two rare conditions. The lesional skin was composed of densely packed, coarse collagen fibres, which were immunohistochemically found to consist of type I, type III and type VI collagens. The amount of elastic fibres was moderately reduced. The glycosaminoglycan content of lesional skin was similar to that in a normal control. Activities of several glycosidases were markedly decreased in cultured fibroblasts.

Notes: Abstract Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure bone mineral density (BMD) in the lumbar spine, proximal femur and distal radius in 48 Japanese children aged 3–18 years. In the normal children (n=32), BMD increased with age in all locations, with a nearly twofold increase from preschool age to adolescence. Most of the children with chronic diseases known to affect vone metabolism (e.g., steroid osteoporosis) (n=16) had low BMD in every region, indicating that these disease states probably affect multiple sites of the skeleton in children.

Notes: Abstract Lon protease, which plays a major role in degradation of abnormal proteins inEscherichia coli, was overproduced and efficiently purified using the maltose-binding protein (MBP) fusion vector. The MBP-Lon fusion protein was expressed in a soluble form inE. coli and purified to homogeneity by amylose resin in a single step. Lon protease was split from MBP by cleaving a fusion point between MBP and Lon with factor Xa and purified by amylose resin and subsequent gel filtration. In this simple method, Lon protease was purified to homogeneity. Purified MBP-Lon fusion protein and Lon protease showed similar breakdown activities with a peptide (succinyl-l-phenylalanyl-l-leucyl-phenylalanyl-β-d-methoxynaphthylamide) and protein (α-casein) in the presence of ATP. Therefore, the gene-fusion approach described in this study is useful for the production of functional Lon protease. MBP-Lon fusion protein, which both binds to the amylose resin and has ATP-dependent protease activity, should be especially valuable for its application in the degradation of abnormal proteins by immobilized enzymes.
