Notes: This paper discusses the impact ionization rates of holes in AlxGa1−xSb near x=0.06, where resonance impact ionization is expected. Resonance impact ionization did not occur in a range of the electric field we studied. We evaluate the impact ionization of holes at the spin-split-off band theoretically, and show that our measured result is reasonable.

Notes: In this letter, a variant of scanning force microscope for detecting attractive forces is reported. The force gradients of the attractive forces acting in two orthogonal directions were detected simultaneously from the resonant frequency shifts of a cantilever oscillating in two directions. Using the fine electrode sample, the distributions of the electrostatic forces acting in lateral and vertical directions were visualized separately.

Notes: An x-ray spectrometer has been designed and constructed for Compton scattering measurements using 40–70 keV x-rays from an ellipsoid multipole wiggler (EMPW) installed in the accumulation ring of the National Laboratory for High Energy Physics at Tsukuba. The spectrometer has four sets of a Cauchois-type energy analyzer and an imaging plate, which are arranged on the surface of a cone and share a scattering angle of 160°. In each energy-analyzing system, to increase signal to noise ratio a set of vertical and horizontal slits are inserted between the analyzer and the imaging plate. A resolution of 0.13 a.u. in terms of electron momentum was achieved. A Compton profile of a vanadium single crystal was measured with an integrated counting rate of 400 counts/s.

Notes: Characteristics of keratins of live carcinomas of sweat gland origin were immunohistochemically investigated with several antikeratin monoclonal antibodies with differing specificities. Specimens were obtained from two cases of mucinous carcinoma of the skin, two cases of classic type of eccrine adenocarcinoma, and a case of eccrine porocarcinoma. The tumor cells of mucinous carcinoma expressed only simple epithelial keratins. In a case of eccrine adenocarcinoma, simple epithelial keratin 19 was diffusely expressed. The expression of the other simple epithelial keratins was confined to the luminal cells, whereas the remaining tumor cells further expressed stratified epithelial keratins. Eccrine porocarcinoma and a second case of eccrine adenocarcinoma did not express simple epithelial keratins, although stratified epithelial keratins were diffusely expressed. These data suggest that carcinomas of sweat glands express various combinations of simple and stratified epithelial keratins. Development of additional data along these lines may help to further define their classification.

Notes: To elucidate the morphogenesis of cornoid lamellae (CL) in porokeratosis, skin lesions of three cases of disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis and a case of linear porokeratosis were examined. By N-(7-dimethylamino-4-methyl-3-coumarinyl)maleimide staining, SH groups were present in the living layer of the epidermis beneath CL and irregularly disappeared at the bottom of CL, whereas SS linkages appeared in dyskeratotic cells in the living layer and in the irregularly shaped cell membranes of the horny cells. Epidermis beneath CL showed an increased and irregular involucrin expression. Ultrastructurally, the living keratinocytes contained many cytoplasmic vacuoles and had a smaller number of lamellar bodies than normal. Intercellular lamellar sheets were incompletely formed. The dyskeratotic cells and the lower horny cells contained many small vacuoles but formed a marginal band. The horny cells of CL also formed a marginal band and, further, a keratin pattern. CL may be formed by hyperproliferative atypical kertatinocytes which keratinize rapidly and irregularly and show defective desquamation due to the paucity of intercellular lamellar sheets.

Notes: An adnexal tumor on the scalp of a 74-year-old woman is described. Histologically, the tumor was composed of cystic structures showing typical trichilemmal keratinization. The tumor cells in the cyst walls often formed duct-like or squamous eddy-like structures and occasionally showed vacuolation or poromalike change. Ultrastructurally, some tumor cells showed differentiation either toward the acrosyringium or sebaceous cells. From these findings, the present tumor is considered to differentiate toward various parts of the hair follicle including infundibulo-isthmus epithelium, apocrine acrosyringium, and sebaceous cells.

Notes: The nuclei of spindle and epithelioid cell nevus (SECN) cells often contain inclusions. To determine the origin and pathogene-sis of the nuclear inclusions, 12 cases of SECN were electron microscopically examined. True inclusions, pseudoinclusions, and electron-lucent areas were frequently found in the nuclei of SECN cells in all cases. The true inclusions were composed of various structures including vesicles and electron-dense homogenous substance. The pseudoinclusions were a cytoplasmic structure engulfed by nucleus; they were surrounded by a nuclear membrane and rich in cytoplasmic vesicles and electron-dense materials. Occasionally, a partial dissolution of the covering membrane of the pseudoinclusions was seen, leaving their contents in the nuclear matrix. It was concluded that a sequential process from the pseudoinclusions to the true inclusions in nuclei was morphologically present in SECN cells.

Notes: To study the roles of eosinophils and catecholamines in the pathophysiology of exercise-induced asthma [EIA], an exercise challenge test was performed in 22 asthmatic children, using a bicycle ergometer, and the changes in lung function, plasma norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (E) and eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) levels with exercise were evaluated. Subjects were classified into three groups from the results of lung function test, respectively: EIA-negative group. EIA-positivc groups with good recovery and poor recovery. Eosinophil counts before exercise in the EIA-positive groups were significantly higher than those in the EIA-negative group. The ECP levels rose with exercise in all groups. Five minutes after exercise, ECP values fell to the pre-cxercise level in the EIA-negative group, hut rose to higher levels in EIA-positive groups. Plasma E levels rose with exercise and showed 4-fold increase in the EIA-negative group, whereas only 1. 5-fold increase of plasma E levels was observed in the EIA-positive group with poor recovery. From these findings, a possible contribution of sympathoadrenal hypofunction and a probable involvement of eosinophils in the pathophysiology of EIA have been suggested.
