    Notes: We have used pyridine and a number of related molecules to lower the workfunction of thin Ag films so as to compare the effects of various molecular properties on the photoemission process and on surface electronic modes. We find that a nitrogen lone pair electronic orbital is essential for a large threshold shift. Other molecular properties, such as dipole moment and polarizability have a very small effect. The films are rough, therefore we see strong photoyields at the energy of the surface plasma mode, 3.6 eV. There is also a peak in the photoyield at 3.85 eV, the energy of the bulk plasmon.

    Notes: We have investigated the effects of rapid thermal annealing on the electrical and optical properties of planar-doped AlGaAs/InGaAs/GaAs high electron mobility transistor structures grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Hall effect and photoluminescence measurements on samples with In0.22Ga0.78As and In0.28Ga0.72As channels reveal a temperature-dependent degradation in sheet charge density, Hall mobility, and photoluminescence response. The structures were essentially stable through the temperature range used in normal device processing. However, annealing temperatures greater than 700 °C resulted in strain relaxation and layer intermixing, especially for the In0.28Ga0.72As sample.

    Notes: Abstract To evaluate the characteristics of combined hepatocellular and cholangiocarcinoma of the liver by imaging techniques, six patients (five male and one female), aged 46–60 years, with proved combined tumors were selected for this study from the review of 500 resected specimens of liver tumors. Images obtained from sonography, computed tomography (CT), angiography, and CT after intraarterial injection of iodized oil (iodized-oil CT) were retrospectively reviewed and correlated with the appearance of pathologic specimens. Sonographic findings were round or ovoid hypoechoic masses with central hyperechoic area (target appearance) in all patients. On CT scans, tumors were relatively well-defined low- and/or iso-attenuation masses in all patients. Angiography showed hypovascular masses in five patients. In one patient, the tumor appeared as a hypovascular mass with a central hypervascular area. On iodized-oil CT scans, all patients showed partial retention of iodized oil in tumors. Echogenicity in tumors at sonography or attenuation in tumors at CT could not be correlated with histologic difference in tumors at pathologic specimens. However, the hypervascular area at angiography and the compact retention areas of iodized oil at iodized-oil CT corresponded to portions of hepatocellular carcinoma within the combined tumor. On the basis of our results, imaging features, including target appearance at sonography, hypovascular mass with central hypervascular portions at angiography, and partial retention of iodized oil in tumors at iodized-oil CT, might be helpful in making accurate diagnosis of these rare tumors.

    Notes: Summary To assess the clinical usefulness of partial flip angle (PFA) spin-echo (SE) brain imaging, a total of eighty patients were examined with both conventional double echo T2-weighted SE (2500/30, 80/90o/one excitation) and PFA double echo SE (1200/30, 70/45o/two excitations) on 2.0T system. Two comparative studies were performed: (1) in 65 patients PFA SE technique was compared with conventional SE without flow compensating gradients, and (2) in 15 patients the former was compared with the latter with flow compensating gradients. Imaging time was nearly identical in each sequence. In both studies we found that PFA T2-weighted SE images were almost identical to those obtained with the conventional SE technique in the contrast characteristics and the detection rate of the abnormalities (100%, 85/85 lesions), and more importantly, PFA SE revealed few flow artifacts in the brain stem, temporal lobes and basal ganglia which were frequently seen on conventional SE without flow compensating gradients. Additionally, PFA SE images demonstrated no suppression of CSF flow void in the aqueduct which was commonly seen on conventional SE with flow compensating gradients. In overall image quality, the PFA SE images, particularly the second echo images, were almost comparable with those of conventional SE with flow compensating gradients. A flip angle of 45o seems to be close to Ernst angle, the angle at which maximum signal occurs, for a given TR of 1200 msec for CSF and most of the abnormalities containing higher water content. In conclusion, PFA SE sequence (i. e. 1200/30, 70/45o/2) appears to be useful as a primary or an adjunctive technique in certain clinical circumstances, particularly in imaging of hydrocephalic patients for assessing aqueductal patency.

    Notes: Summary Twenty-six patients with intracranial tuberculosis (Tb) (10 with acute meningitis, 5 with chronic meningitis, 5 with meningitic sequelae and 6 with localized tuberculoma(s) were examined with MR before and after Gd-DTPA enhancement (0.1 mmol/kg), using 2.0T superconducting unit, and the images were retrospectively analyzed and compared with CT scans. Without Gd-DTPA enhancement, the MR images were generally insensitive to detection of active meningeal inflammation and granulomas. The signal intensity of granulomas was usually isointense to gray matter on both T1- and T2-weighted images, whether they were associated with diffuse meningitis or presented as localized tuberculoma(s). A few granulomas showed focal hypointensity on T2-weighted images. Calcifications seen on CT of the meningitic sequelae group usually appeared markedly hypointense on all spin-echo sequences. On Gd-DTPA enhanced T1-weighted images, abnormal meningeal enhancement indicating active inflammation was conspicuous, and the granulomas often appeared as conglomerated ring-enhancing nodules, which seems to be characteristic of granulomas. Thin rim enhancement around the suprasellar calcifications were observed in two out of 5 patients with meningitic sequelae. Compared with CT, MR detected a few more ischemic infarcts, hemorrhagic infarcts, meningeal enhancement and granulomas in the acute meningitis group, but missed small calcifications in the basal cisterns well shown on CT in the sequelae group. Otherwise, MR generally matched CT scans. MR imaging appears to be superior to CT in evaluation of active intracranial Tb only if Gd-DTPA is used, while CT is better than MR in evaluating meningitic sequelae with calcification.

    Notes: Abstract A four-quadrant MOS analog multiplier is proposed using the quarter-square technique, which is based on the quadratic characteristics of an MOS transistor operating in the saturation region and the difference operation of four identical sourced-coupled differential amplifiers. The multiplier has a simple configuration and a large dynamic range over a wide frequency range, since each input signal passes only one transistor to reach the output. The operation of the multiplier was analyzed in detail, and the second-order effects were also analyzed. The proposed circuit was fabricated in 12-V p-well CMOS process with a 5-μm minimum feature. The measured results show that linearity error is less than 1% for 5-Vp-p input at ±5 V supply voltage, and the-3 db bandwidth is 30 MHz.
