Notes: The ability of Bragg reflection waveguides to support TE-polarized nonlinear guided waves is studied. The dispersion relation for these waves is derived analytically. The numerical studies address the dependence of their propagation constants upon the interface intensity, the guided field power, and their evolution as they propagate down the guide. The characteristic features of the nonlinear guided waves are identified as power thresholds, instability on positively-sloped branches of the dispersion curve and symmetry breaking with the formation of spatial solitons.

Notes: We show that nonlinear mode coupling in a double-antiresonant reflecting optical waveguide structure leads to the power-dependent switching of an optical signal between remote channels.

Notes: Abstract The main results of the theory of spatial subharmonics in photorefractive crystals are summarized. The theory shows that Kukhtarev's equations for the photorefractive response are not valid for sufficiently large values of the mobility-lifetime product and for certain parameters (external field, frequency detuning, grating vector, pump intensity) of a two-beam experiment. The solution for the space-charge field including only the fundamental and the higher harmonics is not stable against the generation of new spatial frequencies. The condition of subharmonic generation and the main characteristics of the subharmonics are expressed by standard experimental and crystal parameters. Good quantitative agreement between theory and experiment is obtained. The prospects of further investigations of subharmonics are discussed.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that a moving intensity grating in a photorefractive crystal with a sufficiently large lifetimemobility product can give rise to an instability against excitation of weakly damped space-charge waves. Increments and threshold of the instability are investigated for the threedimensional case. Subharmonics and other nonlinear scenarios of saturation are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A calculation is presented which derives the absorbed dose experienced by pediatric patients of different ages who swallow a non absorbable99mTc compound. All previous models assume sudden movement of radionuclide from one compartment of the gastrointestinal tract to another. The present model is novel in considering continuous distal motion through the gut and so more closely approximates the physiologic situation. Published S values are used to derive absorbed doses. The resulting calculated absorbed doses are comparable to, or lower than, those previously published and these differences are most marked in the large gut, which remains the critical organ.

Notes: Abstract Fifty consecutive paediatric patients with objective clinical signs of blunt abdominal trauma underwent both computed abdominal tomography (CT) and liver-spleen scintigraphy (LSS). All were managed non-operatively with no morbidity or mortality. Five splenic and 13 liver injuries were visualised on CT while LSS revealed 9 splenic and 29 liver injuries. Where injury to either organ was detected by both modalities, there was good correlation anatomically and also as to the extent of injury. LSS demonstrated injuries not shown on CT, which appeared to detect only more extensive injuries. We conclude that scintigraphy may be the more sensitive and therefore more appropriate method when blunt injury to the liver and spleen alone is clinically suspected. Abdominal CT remains the early investigation of choice in patients with clinical evidence of haemoperitoneum associated with shock or multiple injuries, particularly when injury to the kidneys as well as to the liver and spleen is suspected or when a concomitant brain scan is indicated.

Notes: The acute toxicity by inhalation of polyurethane combustion and decomposition products was investigated by means of animal experiments. The results demonstrated that previous regulative and normative approaches which are based on the chemical nature of the materials tested and the analytically determined concentration data for major fire gas components are inconsistent with the research findings set out in TR 9122 of ISO TC92 SC3. The animal experiments, which complied with the test and assessment criteria put forward by the experts of ISO TC92 SC3 ‘Toxic Hazards in Fire’, provided convincing evidence that the overall toxic potency of the decomposition products released by polyurethane foam and PU coatings under comparable fire conditions was the same as for wood or wool. It was found that the acute toxic hazard potential of combustion gases is determined by the concentration of toxic components in the fire effluents (which in turn depends on the quantity of material burned in unit time) and by local conditions. This means that all parameters capable of affecting the combustion process are critical.
