Notes: Summary Early insulin release after oral glucose is absent in protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM). There is an increase of the insulin-glucose ratio at 10 and 15 min induced by potassium supplementation compared to a similar group receiving an identical diet without supplementary potassium. This suggests that impaired insulin secretion in PCM is in part due to a potassium mediated disturbance of insulin release.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary After injection of 1,2-H3-d-aldosterone in 3 normal and 3 hepatectomized dogs, the percentage of the injected radioactivity in urine was determined in the 3 fractions: free aldosterone (pH 6), 3-oxo-conjugate (pH 1) and tetrahydroaldosterone-glucuronide (pH 5). We found that the 3-oxo-conjugate fraction in hepatectomized dogs was in the same range as in the normal ones. The pH 5 fraction was decreased in the hepatectomized dogs while the free aldosterone increased markedly.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In 13 patients with liver cirrhosis (4 decompensated, 9 compensated), 2 patients with hepatic coma and 3 patients with acute hepatitis the two major metabolites of aldosterone, the 3-oxo-conjugate and the tetrahydroaldosteroneglucuronide, were determined by the double isotope dilution method. In a few cases also the secretion rate of aldosterone was measured. In 4 patients these investigations were carried out over a longer period of time. It was found that in cases with severe liver cirrhosis and increased serumglutamatoxalacetate-transaminase a disturbance of the metabolism of aldosterone occurs. The ratio of 3-oxo-conjugate to tetrahydroaldosteroneglucuronide in urine changed in favor of the 3-oxo-conjugate. Several times the values of the 3-oxo-conjugate were higher than those of the tetrahydroaldosteroneglucuronide, while normally the ratio of the 3-oxo-conjugate to the tetrahydroaldosteroneglucuronide is in the range of 1:3,5. Therefore the formation of the 3-oxo-conjugate in contrary to that of the tetrahydroaldosteroneglucuronide is not decreased. For this reason and some other experimental evidences an extrahepatic transformation to this metabolite has to be taken into consideration.

Notes: Summary Long trains of electrical stimuli supramaximal for Group I fibers of PBST nerves were used to study the effect on GS pathway. Inhibition of GS monosynaptic response occurred during PBST stimulation: however, decline in the inhibition developed with time despite the constancy of the inhibitory input monitored from the dorsal root. The level of recovery of the monosynaptic reflex at steady state depended upon the frequency of PBST stimulation, the higher the frequency the more complete the recovery. The effect of increasing the frequency of GS stimulation was to increase the inhibitory effect from PBST. Enhanced excitability of GS primary afferent endings in monosynaptic contact with homonymous motoneurons occurred and decreased parallel to the recovery of the monosynaptic response. When present, the polysynaptic response evoked by stimulating GS peripheral nerves increased during PBST stimulation in an inverse relation to changes in the monosynaptic response. Intracellular recordings from GS motoneurons usually revealed no change in membrane potential or in excitability of postsynaptic membrane to direct stimulation. Increased delay of intracellular GS spike potential was observed during PBST stimulation. The amount of this shift can be accounted for by polysynaptic activation of the same motoneuron.

Notes: Abstract This report describes a case of “dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica” with the first clinical manifestations at birth and increasing difference in the length of the lower extremities during infancy. The diagnosis was made at the age of 3 years when marked disability had already occurred. There was involvement of both legs and, to a lesser degree, the arms suggesting that this is a systemic disorder.

Notes: Abstract This case report describes a patient who suffered from backache at the age of 12 years. The initial diagnosis was Scheuermann's disease but repeated examinations showed a progressive discitis, without sings of arthritis of the sacro-iliac joints. There was also a recurring effusion of the left knee. Three years later the clinical and radiological evaluation showed irreversible immobilisation of the dorsolumbar spine, whereas the sacro-iliac joints were mildly affected. Discitis seems to be a rare early symptom of ankylosing spondylitis.

Notes: Abstract A differential protein display screen resulted in the identification of a 27-kDa protein which strongly accumulates during the senescence of Podospora anserina cultures grown under standard conditions. After partial determination of the amino-acid sequence by mass-spectrometry analysis of trypsin-generated fragments, pairs of degenerated primers were deduced and used to amplify parts of the sequence coding for the protein. These PCR products were utilized to select specific cDNA and genomic clones from DNA libraries of P. anserina. A subsequent DNA-sequence analysis revealed that the 27-kDa protein is encoded by a discontinuous gene, PaMth1, capable of coding for 240 amino acids. The first three amino-terminal residues appear to be removed post-translationally. The deduced amino-acid sequence shows significant homology to S-adenosylmethionine (SAM)-dependent methyltransferases. We hypothesize that the 27-kDa protein, PaMTH1, is involved in age-related methylation reactions protecting aging cultures against increasing oxidative stress.

Notes: Abstract.  A generalized systematic description of the Two-Wave Mixing (TWM) process in sillenite crystals allowing for arbitrary orientation of the grating vector is presented. An analytical expression for the TWM gain is obtained for the special case of plane waves in a thin crystal (∣g∣d≪1) with large optical activity (∣g∣/ϱ≪1, g is the coupling constant, ϱ the rotatory power, d the crystal thickness). Using a two-dimensional formulation the scope of the nonlinear equations describing TWM can be extended to finite beams in arbitrary geometries and to any crystal parameters. Two promising applications of this formulation are proposed. The polarization dependence of the TWM gain is used for the flattening of Gaussian beam profiles without expanding them. The dependence of the TWM gain on the interaction length is used for the determination of the crystal orientation. Experiments carried out on Bi12GeO20 crystals of a non-standard cut are in good agreement with the results of modelling.
