    Notes: We have used an intravenous micro-drip infusion set to identify the epidural space in 350 infants and children. The infusion set was prepared with saline and connected to the hub of an epidural needle. Free dripping of saline was regarded as a sign that the needle tip had entered the epidural space. The overall success rate of this method was 97.7%.

    Notes: The dynamic occlusal force patterns associated with the performance of rhythmic tapping movement were analysed in normal subjects, who were instructed to make tapping movements at four frequencies, 2, 2.5, 3.3 and 5 Hz, with as constant a magnitude of force as possible. The occlusal force recorded by an intra-oral customized device showed a triphasic pattern which could be divided into two components, and this pattern was more clearly defined during slower tapping movements. Of the two components, the first was relatively stable, regardless of changes in tapping frequency, while the second was highly dependent on the tapping cycle duration, and its duration was shortened with increases in tapping frequency. Furthermore, there was a significant correlation between the changes in the occlusal power phase and those in the burst duration of the masseter EMG simultaneously recorded by a pair of surface electrodes. On the basis of these findings, it is suggested that the tapping rhythm is modulated by the duration of the occlusal power phase and the associated jaw elevator muscle activity.

    Notes: Abstract Male C57BL/6×DS-F1 mice that had been treated with 3′-methyl-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene (3′-Me-DAB) neonatally were subjected to sialoadenectomy (removal of the submandibular salivary glands) 60 days after birth. The development of adenomatous nodules and carcinomas in the livers of these mice was compared with the livers of males without sialoadenectomy. The incidence of adenomatous nodules in sialoadenectomized males at 6, 8, 10, and 12 months was significantly lower than that in sham-operated animals. Carcinomas were found in the livers of both sham-operated and sialoadenectomized males that were 10 and 12 months old and were less frequent in sialoadenectomized males although the difference was significant only at the age of 12 months. Sialoadenectomy decreased the serum concentration of epidermal growth factor (EGF) by about 40%. The present results indicate that sialoadenectomy inhibits the development of hepatocellular tumours induced by 3′-Me-DAB in male mice, an effect which may be caused by decrease in the serum level of EGF.

    Notes: Abstract The biochemical properties of collagens from the periarticular connective tissues of the human knee (ligaments, semitendinosus and gracilis tendons, and the iliotibial band) were investigated in subjects ranging from 20 to 70 years of age. Although the total collagen content of most tissues was more than 90% of the dry weight, the anterior cruciate ligament and the iliotibial band had relatively low collagen contents. There were no significant changes in the tissue collagen content with aging. However, the anterior cruciate ligament and the patellar tendon of the 20-year-old subject had a higher content of soluble collagen than the other ligaments and tendons. The iliotibial band of the 20-year-old subject contained more collagen that was soluble by a combination of salt, sodium citrate extractions and pepsin digestion. Dihydroxylysinonorleucine was the major reducible cross-link of collagen from all the ligaments. The amount of dihydroxylysinonorleucine in the anterior cruciate ligament of the 20-year-old subject was much higher than that in the other ligaments. In contrast, the tendons and the iliotibial band contained a large amount of histidino-hydroxymerodesmosine and hydroxylysinonorleucine, while the patellar tendon was the only tendon with a significant content of dihydroxylysinonorleucine. Hydroxypyridinium non-reducible cross-links were more abundant in collagens from ligaments than in collagens from the other tissues. The cross-link study and the analysis of collagen solubility showed that patellar tendon collagen more closely resembled the collagen from the anterior cruciate ligament than that from periarticular tendons. It was also shown that the anterior cruciate ligament contains relatively immature collagen compared with the other ligaments. Our findings may contribute to an improved understanding of the functions of the ligaments and tendons around the knee joint. In addition, the data may provide some useful pointers that will help in selection of periarticular tissues as appropriate substitutes for ligament replacement.

    Notes: Abstract We present our technique for reconstruction of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) using the semitendinosus and gracilis tendons with the Kennedy ligament augmentation device (LAD). The safe and excellent exposure of the posterior aspect of the knee allowed us to identify the most isometric position in the intercondylar notch of the femur. In addition to this advantage, firm fixation of the LAD-augmented tendons with staples prevented the tibia from sagging posteriorly during early protected motion of the knee. Evaluation of 12 patients followed for more than 2 years showed 9 (75%) good results. In this small series no correlation was found between clinical results and the number of major structures injured, indicating that postoperative care is as important as isometric placement of the PCL in obtaining satisfactory results.

    Notes: Abstract The CO2 decomposition into carbon with the rhodium-bearing activated magnetite (Rh-AM) was studied in comparison with the activated magnetite (AM). The Rh-AM and the AM were prepared by flowing hydrogen gas through the rhodium-bearing magnetite (Rh-M) and the magnetite (M), respectively. The rate of activation of the Rh-M to the Rh-AM was about three times higher than that of the M to the AM at 300 °C. The reactivity for the CO2 decomposition into carbon with the Rh-AM (70% CO2 was decomposed in 40 min) was higher than that with the AM (30% in 40 min) at 300 °C. The Rh-M was activated to the Rh-AM at a lower temperature of 250 °C, and the Rh-AM decomposed CO2 into carbon at 250 °C. On the other hand, the M was little activated at 250 °C.

    Notes: Abstract The cyclic creep behaviour under axial tension was quantitatively investigated using non-linear viscoelastic cellulose nitrate heated at 65°C. The instantaneous strains at the instants of loading and unloading for three creep cycles and the creep strain rates during the three creep cycles were found to be influenced by the cycle numbers. However, the effect of the cycle number on the loading process was quite different from that on the unloading process in the cyclic creep deformation. The evaluation of the creep constitutive equations for the loading and unloading processes at one loading cycle deduced in the previous papers is discussed for the cyclic creep deformation. The deduced creep equations give good agreement with the actual observations for the three creep cycles independent of the cycle numbers and of the creep stress levels.
