Notes: We study collective diffusion in a semidilute suspension of Brownian particles interacting with a square well potential. Under neglect of hydrodynamic interactions, we derive an explicit expression for the wave number- and frequency-dependent diffusion coefficient. At zero frequency, the diffusion coefficient exhibits a resonance structure which varies strongly with the square well parameters.

Notes: We study the long-time wave-number-dependent collective diffusion coefficient of a semidilute suspension of interacting spherical Brownian particles with direct and hydrodynamic interactions. Explicit results are found for the first two nonvanishing terms in an expansion in powers of the wave number for a suspension of hard spheres with hydrodynamic interactions.

Notes: Summary A 64-year-old man with high malignant B-cell lymphoma in both adrenal glands was investigated. Adrenal insufficiency was his predominant symptom at presentation. Despite surgical resection of the malignancy and cytostatic chemotherapy leptomeningeal involvement occurred and the patient died nine month after the diagnosis. Nine so far reported cases with primary adrenal lymphoma were reviewed. One of these also developed lymphomatous leptomeningitis. Suggestions of a pathogenetic contribution of adrenal lymphoma to leptomeningeal involvement and arising therapeutic consequences in the treatment of primary adrenal lymphoma are discussed.

Notes: [Auszug] We used the isotope signatures to characterize elephant populations in different habitats in southern Africa (Fig. 1). In most cases bone from the jaws or ribs was used, but some samples of ivory were also included. The specimens came from the Knysna Forest on the south coast of the Cape Province, ...

Notes: Abstract We calculated how long to wait before repeating bone mineral density (BMD) measurements to reassess fracture risk. Correlation results from serial measurements of 495 postmenopausal Japanese-American women were used to estimate 95% confidence intervals (CI) for future BMD. After 7 years of follow-up, BMD correlations with the initial measurement ranged between 0.81 and 0.94, depending on age group and measurement site. In this analysis, the period between measurements was defined as the time required for the lower 95% CI to fall below the BMD value corresponding to doubling of fracture risk. Progressive bone loss causes fracture risk to double after 10 years, on average. However, the 95% CIs indicate that a second BMD measurement will detect risk doubling after only 2 or 3 years for some women. For untreated, early postmenopausal women, the period between measurements was approximately 2–5 years for the radius and 4–6 years for the calcaneus, depending on the initial BMD level. The period was approximately 1 year longer for women age 60 and older. Treatments that halve the bone loss rate would increase the period by 1–3 years. In the absence of a second measurement of BMD, the CI will continue to expand with time, corresponding to a wider range in risk between individuals, and a greater proportion of women will be at increased fracture risk. Obtaining a second BMD measurement pinpoints the patient's status within the precision of the measurement. We conclude that repeated BMD measurements will provide a more accurate estimate of fracture risk than a single, baseline measurement.

Notes: Summary We observed an atypicalPneumocystis infection with spontaneous pneumothorax, bronchopleural fistulae, an apical cyst andPneumocystis pleuritis after aerosolized pentamidine prophylaxis in an AIDS patient. These findings suggest a failure of pentamidine aerosol in controlling activePneumocystis infection in peripheral pulmonary areas. A relapse ofPneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) must be suspected when pneumothorax occurs during secondary prophylaxis with aerosolized pentamidine. It should always be confirmed by bronchoalveolar lavage or transbronchial or open biopsy. Cases presenting as atypicalPneumocystis pneumonia may additionally reveal extrapulmonary dissemination ofPneumocystis infection.

Notes: For statistic copolymers of styrene and n-butyl methacrylate, the relation between the glass transition temperature and the chemical composition or molecular weight of the copolymers has been determined. Further, the dependence of the glass transition temperature on the composition of binary and ternary blends from statistical poly (styrene-co-n-butyl methacrylates) of a nearly equal chemical composition but a very different molecular weight has been studied. Among several equations considered for the correlation between glass transition temperature and composition of the mentioned copolymers with relatively low molecular weights, the Gordon/Taylor and Couchman equations gave the best agreement with the experimental results. For the glass transition temperature of poly(styrene-co-n-butyl methacrylate) with an n-butyl methacrylate content of about 30 wt % in dependence on the molecular weight, the Kanig-Ueberreiter and Fox-Flory equations proved to be useful for the examined molecular weight range. The glass transition temperatures of the polymer blends have been studied for a low/high-molecular component system, a system of two low-molecular components, as well as for systems with a third component. The glass transition temperatures of the mixtures frequently exceeded those of their individual components. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
