Notes: The effective permeability ( μeff) of the ring Sendust alloys (Fe-9–10 wt. % Si-5–7 wt. %Al), molded with Epoxy resin, was measured in the temperature range of −10 to 70 °C. The μeff of the alloys in molded condition measured at 20 °C is smaller than that in unmolded condition. The high values of the μeff at 20 °C of the molded alloys were obtained from the alloys in which magnetostriction constants (λs) were close to zero. The temperature dependencies of the μeff for the studied alloys in the unmolded condition are very similar, but after molding they are classified into four variations depending on the value of λs. When the alloys have large positive or negative values of λs, the μeff increases or decreases monotonically with increasing temperatures, but for the alloy with λs (approximately-equal-to)0, the μeff temperature dependence is complex. These behaviors of the μeff with temperature are interpreted on the basis of the induced stress, initiating from the differences in thermal expansion between alloys and Epoxy resin. The μeff of the molded alloys was mainly dominated by the induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (Ku) by the tangential and axial compressive stresses in the molded ring alloys.

Notes: The impact fatigue crack growth characteristics of a low carbon steel and an aluminium alloy were studied. An impact fatigue testing machine of the Hopkinson bar type was used in these experiments to conduct a series of crack growth tests under simple impact stresses. The following characteristics of impact fatigue crack growth behaviour were revealed: (1) crack growth rate is higher in impact fatigue than in non-impact fatigue; (2) crack opening ratio in impact fatigue takes a higher value than in non-impact fatigue; (3) crack tip plastic zone size is smaller in impact fatigue than in non-impact fatigue.

Notes: We have investigated the immunoperoxidase staining pattern in the epidermis and dermal infiltrates of highly inflamed portions of psoriatic lesions, selecting for biopsy early pinpoint lesions or margins of active plaque lesions. We found positive intercellular staining for HLA-DR antigens in localized areas of the epidermis in about half of the patients tested. In contrast, OKT6 antigen was found only on the dendritic cells in the epidermis and dermis in all cases. These findings support the hypothesis that an active cellular immune reaction involving the epidermis, possibly associated with the expression of HLA-DR antigens on keratinocytes, occurs in the highly inflamed areas of psoriatic lesions, particularly in early pinpoint lesions or at the edges of spreading plaque lesions.

Notes: Ultrastrutual, immunohistochemical and gene analytical studies were carried out on a 39-year-old patient with lymphomatoid papulosis. Two different cell groups were demonstrated in the papulonodular eruptions: large atypical cells with multiple nuclei that were well stained with anti-Tac, but not with Leu 3a, and other cells that possessed prominent hyperchromatic nuclei and which stained well with Leu 1 and Leu 3a but not with anti-Tac. Gene analytical studies using EcoRI, BamHI and HindIII revealed no rearrangement, indicating a non-clonal T-cell proliferation unlike malignant T-cell lymphoma. These results suggest that the present case was benign.

Notes: A 51-year-old Japanese man and his 56-year-old sister of consanguineous parents had skin lesions with areas of dark-brown pigmentation and blisters with minimal trauma on sunexposed skin which resembled those seen in porphyria cutanea tarda. Their fresh urine was wine-red in colour and fluoresced with ultraviolet light. The peripheral blood contained fluorocytes and porphyrin analysis of the red blood cells, urine and faeces of the patients revealed an increase of the isotype I of uro- and coproporphyrin and normal concentrations of δ-aminolaevulinate and porphobilinogen, suggesting the diagnosis of erythropoietic porphyria. No other members of this family had symptoms or biochemical findings suggestive of porphyria. We consider these two cases to be that of late onset erythropoietic porphyria.

Notes: We describe a patient in whom a suppressor/cytotoxic T cell lymphoma was suspected on the basis of histology and immunohistochemistry. DNA analysis of specimens from three different lesions, using restriction enzymes Eco RI and Bam HI, showed the same rearrangement of the T cell receptor β-chain genes. We consider this technique to be of value in the early diagnosis of malignant lymphoma when differential diagnosis from other lymphoproliferative disorders is difficult with conventional methods.

Notes: Abstract It is demonstrated for the first time that spatial filtering of partially reflected irradiance of light from a directly modulated semiconductor laser diode produces a weak but appreciable amount of harmonic distortions. The laser diode discussed here is assembled to be misaligned in such a way that there is significant reflection of light from the submount attached to the heat sink. This geometry of laser and submount gives rise to interfered light intensities of simultaneous AM- and FM-modulated outputs in the far-field region. Numerical calculations are presented for a variety of laser structures and FM-modulation parameters. The second-order harmonic distortion is found to disclose multiple peaks with respect to the aperture radius of a receiving optical system.

Notes: Summary In natural squid liver, about 30% of the total Cd present was found in the cytosolic fraction. A large portion of this Cd was bound to high molecular weight species (mol. wt〉70,000). In contrast to Cd, about 60% of the total Ag occurred in the cytosolic fraction; Ag was bound mainly to low molecular weight species (mol. wt〈20,000).

Notes: Summary A rare case with pleomorphic intra-neuronal polyglucosan bodies is reported. A 45-year-old man died of gastric carcinoma with extensive visceral involvement. The autopsy showed numerous intra-neural pleomorphic PAs-positive deposits reminiscent of Bielschowsky bodies in the lateral segments of the pallidum, substantia nigra, and brain stem on both sides. Their histochemical properties were consistent with polyglucosan. The bodies were ultrastructurally composed of filamentous structures and seen in perikarya, axons, and dendrites. Occasionally, spotty electron-dense material was seen in the center of the bodies. The filaments were selectively stained with thiocarbohydrazide method after Thiéry, indicating their chief component as glucose polymers. The bodies are compared with Bielschowsky bodies, Lafora bodies, corpora amylacea, and related bodies, and their nature and significance are briefly discussed.
