    Notes: Summary. Diquat and sodium monochloroacetate (SMA) were used to desiccate seed crops of red beet in experiments from 1963 to 1965. The seed plants became brown and dry about 7 days after spraying and were then judged suitable for combine harvesting, although this was not done in these experiments. Yields of seed 7 days after spraying were as good as those from the control plants, but were lower than the control yields when harvested 14 days after spraying. In laboratory tests in moist sand at 20° C the percentage of the embryos which germinated was not markedly affected by diquat or SMA treatment. The emergence of seedlings in the field, however, was affected adversely by treatment of the seed crop with 11 and 22 oz/ac of diquat ion in 1963 and by SMA at 20 lb/ac in 1964 and 1965. Diquat at 6·6 oz/ac in 120 gal/ac water in 1964 and 1965 had no serious adverse effects on embryo emergence. Residues of diquat ion in seed varied from 2 to 4 ppm, but the impairment of embryo emergence by diquat was believed to be due to the premature arrest of growth of the seed on the desiccated plants.It is concluded that when harvesting conditions are poor, desiccants could be valuable.Influence des traitements dessicants et de la date de récolte sur le rendement et la qualité de la sentence de betterave rouge

    Notes: Abstract The specific activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPCase; EC 4.1.1.39) in crude extracts of leaves from euploid, amphiploid and alloplasmic lines of wheat fell into high or low categories (3.75 or 2.70 μmol·mg−1·min−1, 30°C). For the alloplasmic lines, where the same hexaploid nuclear genome was substituted into different cytoplasms, the specific activity of RuBPCase was consistent with the type of cytoplasm (high for the B and S cytoplasms and low for the A and D cytoplasms). There was no evidence from the euploid and amphiploid lines that small subunits encoded in different nuclear genomes influenced the specific activity. High specific activity was conferred by possession of the chloroplast genome of the B-type cytoplasm which encodes the large subunit of RuBPCase. All lines with a cytoplasm derived from the Sitopsis section of wheat, with the exception of Aegilops longissima and A. speltoides 18940, had RuBPCase with high specific activity. In contrast with the euploid lines of A. longissima, the alloplasmic line containing A. longissima cytoplasm from a different source had RuBPCase with high specific activity. The difference in specific activity found here in-vitro was not apparent in-vivo when leaf gas exchange was measured.

    Notes: Summary Seed was collected from watercress plants grown in sand cultures supplied with nutrient solutions containing either 0.2, 1.0, or 4.0 me/l of phosphorus. The seed, called P1, P2, and P3 seed respectively, contained 0.47, 0.84, and 0.95 per cent P, while other differences in its composition and in its size were relatively slight. When grown under conditions of phosphorus deficiency, 7- to 9-week-old plants from P3 seed were larger than those from P2, which in turn were larger than those from P1 seed, but such differences were not measurable when the plants were mature at 16 to 20 weeks. When grown in cultures adequately supplied with phosphorus there were no differences between the weights of plant from any of the three kinds of seed either at 6 to 7 weeks or at 16 to 20 weeks. The different levels of phosphorus supply in the first generation had no measurable effects on 6 1/2-week-old plants in the third generation.

    Notes: Abstract The fluorescence of the chlorophyll associated with photosystem II was studied in seedling and flag leaves of Triticum species. Seedling leaves of the diploid species T. urartu had higher values of t (the normalised area over the fluorescence induction curve of DCMU treated leaves) than those of the other species studied which included hexaploid T. aestivum. However this difference was not evident when leaves were grown in a low light intensity (40 µmol quanta of photosynthetically active radiation m−2 s−1). The smaller total number of chlorophyll molecules per photosystem II reaction centre (chl/RCII) in T. urartu (177) as compared with the other species (mean 234) was deduced from the observed differences in t. As a consequence of its lower chl/RCII, despite slightly lower chlorophyll content (mg m−2), T. urartu had a greater density of reaction centres than the other species (2880 cf 2230 nmol m−2 of leaf). Consistent with the lower chl/RCII of T. urartu, it had a higher chlorophyll a/b ratio than the other genotypes. Seedling leaves of T. urartu had higher light saturated rates of photosynthesis than those of the other species, when grown at high light, a difference associated with reaction centre density. In flag leaves, when the complications due to variable development and senescence patterns were eliminated, t of the diploid species including T. urartu was lower than that of T. aestivum. The lower apparent chl/RCII of T. urartu arose partly because the molar extinction coefficient of the chlorophyll in the leaves of T. urartu was greater than in T. aestivum. However, the density of PS II reaction centres was slightly lower for the diploid species studied because their chlorophyll contents were lower than the hexaploids. The validity of the method for estimating chl/RCII from fluorescence transients is discussed. The possibility is considered that the difference in apparent chl/RCII of flag and seedling leaves of R. urartu as compared to the other five genotypes is a consequence of its different adaptive response to the spectral quality of the light.

    Notes: Abstract The new infra-red gas analyser for measurement of CO2 concentration described uses a focussed, dual optical path. The 2W radiation source is a heated alumina bead and a cooled lead selenide photoconductive detector measures the difference in radiation absorption at 4.26 μm by the gas in sample and reference tubes. Radiation is chopped alternately between these tubes at 120 Hz. The signal from the detector is processed through an a.c. coupled amplifier, phase sensitive detector and low pass filter. Incorporated into the photosynthesis meter, the sample tube of the analyser is connected to a leaf chamber and circulating pump forming a closed gas circuit. As a leaf in the chamber removes carbon dioxide from the air in the closed circuit, the decrease in its concentration is sensed by the analyser. The time taken for the concentration to decrease by a predetermined amount (typically 30 ppm) is displayed and rate of net photosynthesis can be calculated from this and the volume of the closed circuit. A measurement of the light-saturated rate of net photosynthesis of a healthy flag leaf of wheat can be made in 10–15 seconds. The system is fully portable and has been used intensively in the field for two summers.

    Notes: Summary In glasshouse experiments with peas grown in nutrient cultures, seed from phosphorus-deficient plants contained much lower phosphorus concentrations than seed from plants not deficient in this element, but differences in the supply of mineral nitrogen to the plants (which were nodulated) had little effect on the chemical composition of the seed. Lower haulm weights and pea yields were obtained from sowings of low-phosphorus as compared with high-phosphorus seed when the plants were grown in cultures deficient in phosphorus. In cultures not deficient in phosphorus, there were no such differences between the performance of the seed. In field experiments carried out on a fertile soil, low-phosphorus seeds gave 20 to 25 per cent lower yields of both haulms and peas than were obtained from sowings of high-phosphorus seed. It appeared that the differences in the performance of the seeds weer related to differences in the concentration of phosphorus they contained rather than to any other variation in their composition or size.

    Notes: Abstract Usisng intact leaves, the extent of the decrease in chlorophyll a fluorescenece caused by the addition of continuous 710 nm light superimposed on modulated (20 Hz) 550 nm light was used to determine the distribution of this absorbed light between photosystems I (α) and II (β). The Fo and Fm levels, which defined the total variable fluorescenece, were taken as equal to those obtained with excess 710 nm light and with saturating blue-green light, respectively. An analogous procedure was used with a photoacoustic detector, saturating white light defining a base line for oxygen yield, the levels with an without 710 nm light being used to define β and α respectively. The two methods gave similar values for the distribution of light between the two photosystems for the experimental conditions used, β averaging 0.55 for a range of Triticum genotypes and Brachypodium sylvaticum grown in high or low light.
