Notes: Abstract Synaptonemal complex (SC) karyotyping is used to analyse the relationship of two Palearctic hamsters. Male Phodopus sungorus have 13 SCs plus an X-Y pair while P. roborovskii has 16 SCs and an X-Y pair. P. sungorus has four nucleolar organizers as opposed to two in P. roborovskii. Centromeres of the X and Y are juxtaposed in the pairing region of the latter but not in the former. SC lengths and relative arm ratios are also discussed. Comparisons with karyotypes of other hamster genera indicate large intergeneric karyotypic differences and expectedly much smaller variation within each genus. Data on the two Phodopus species suggest that their presently accepted congeneric status warrants further examination.

Notes: Abstract A continuous high flow CPAP system incorporating a turbine blower is described. The system achieves inspiratory flow rates of 150l/min or more by means of reticulated gas flow and inspired oxygen fractions of 0.21–0.95. Positive airway pressure is provided by weighted disc valves and a modified aviationtype CPAP face mask provides electronic communication with the patient. The mobility of the system also enables its use as an intermittent physiotherapy aid. Work of breathing of the system, as assessed by total pressure fluctuations, is at a minimum.

Notes: Summary Trees of a highland provenance ofPinus caribaea var.hondurensis Barr. and Golf. in an unhealthy stand on Melville Is., Australia displaying symptoms of needleless shoots, short needles, premature needle fall, resin exudation from the stem, fasciation of the stem tip tip dieback and multiple leadering were markedly improved by the application of Zn. Other plantings of highland provenances ofP. caribaea var.hondurensis in the lowland tropics with similar disorders may benefit from Zn application.
