Notes: Abstract In this prospective study, the incidence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and CMV disease was determined in 175 renal transplant recipients on cyclosporin and low-dose prednisone. CMV infection occurred in 51.4% of the patients, CMV disease in 13.7%. The major manifestations of CMV disease were fever of unknown origin and leukopenia. In the group with CMV infection, there was an increased occurrence of rejection (60% in infected vs 27% in noninfected patients). In most patients (41/54), the rejection preceded the CMV infection. CMV infection did not lead to a decreased graft survival. There was no close time relationship between the onset of clinical symptoms of CMV disease and the laboratory confirmation of CMV infection. A subgroup of patients at risk for the development of severe CMV disease could not be identified.

Notes: Abstract Under certain conditions a cannibalistic population can survive when food for the adults is too scarce to support a non-cannibalistic population. Cannibalism can have this lifeboat effect if (i) the juveniles feed on a resource inaccessible to the adults; and (ii) the adults are cannibalistic and thus incorporate indirectly the inaccessible resource. Using a simple model we conclude that the mechanism works when, at low population densities, the average yield, in terms of new offspring, due to the energy provided by one cannibalized juvenile is larger than one.

Notes: Abstract A monoenergetic positron (e +) beam (ΔT/T〈5·10−4) from the Stuttgart pelletron accelerator and a 4.6 mg/cm2 Be target has been employed to investigatee + e −scattering in the MeV region in a large solid angle with high statistics by means of a novel positionsensitive detector system. Superimposed on the Bhabha scattering, a structure has been found at ane + kinetic energy of 2263 keV (810 keV excitation energy in thee + e −rest frame). From the energy-integrated resonance cross-section of $$\sigma _{res} \cdot \Gamma _{res}^{e^ + e^ - } $$ ≅30 b·eV (c.m.) and the standard resonance cross-section we estimate partial resonance widths $$\Gamma _{res}^{e^ + e^ - } $$ ≅72 meV or 24 meV for total angular momenta J=0 or J=1, respectively. The structure, which has not been predicted within the framework of quantum electrodynamics, coincides with one of the sum energies of the correlatede + e −lines observed in heavy-ion collisions.

Notes: Abstract Proton-induced x-ray studies of monazite grains from different occurrences show no evidence for primordial superheavy elements. It is demonstrated that the recently reported evidence for superheavy elements in monazite inclusions of biotite mica showing giant halo formation is not significant: the observed differences in the x-ray spectra of normal and giant halo inclusions are due to different backgrounds in the respective spectra. Moreover, it is shown that the 27.2 keV line tentatively interpreted as theL α1x-ray of elementZ=126 can be entirely attributed to the reaction140Ce(p,n γ)140Pr.

Notes: Abstract The time-differential attenuation coefficients for randomly fluctuating interactions in isotropic systems are shown to be of the simple exponential type (well known from the first order treatment of Abragam and Pound) fort≫Τ c , notwithstanding the strength of 〈Ω2〉1/2Τ c . Explicit expressions for the relaxation constant are given which are strongly dependent on the strength of 〈Ω2〉1/2Τ c and on the type of interaction but prove to be virtually independent of the stochastic model assumptions.

Notes: Summary A follow-up study of mother to infant transmission of hepatitis B virus was conducted in the Philippines between 1981 and 1983. The prevalence of HBsAg among 527 mothers was 8.5%. Overall, seven out of 17 (41.2%) infants born to HBsAg carrier mothers became HBsAg positive within the first 12 months of life. The risk of becoming HBsAg positive was about 20 times higher for infants born to HBsAg positive mothers than for infants born to HBsAg negative mothers (OR=18.9, 95% Ci=2.0−86.6). The risk was even higher if the mother was a carrier of both HBsAg und HBeAg (OR=91.0, 95% Ci=49.2−164.8). However, the risk of transmission was very low if the mother was an HBsAg carrier and anti-HBe positive. It was estimated that mother to infant transmission accounts for about one third of HBsAg positivity at one year of age. The implications of these findings in the planning of vaccination campaigns to prevent HBV infections are discussed.

Notes: Summary When mungbean landraces from East Java were intercropped with maize, genetic variation for grain yield was observed. Three cycles of selection resulted in a yield increase of 24% as compared to the original landraces. The yield of the maize component in the mixture was not affected by the increase of the mungbean yield.

Notes: Summary The possibility of testing mungbean for grain yield in monoculture in single wide-spaced row plots as an alternative to selection in intercropping with maize was investigated. Results indicated no significant genotype x planting pattern interactions and genetic correlation coefficients between grain yields in the two planting patterns were, in most cases, close to unity. It was concluded that, as far as the mungbean component in the mixture is concerned, yield selection in either of the two planting patterns is justified. Effects of single-plant and progeny selection on mungbean characteristics were also studied empirically. Lines derived from single-plant selection in monocropping or intercropping showed differences in yield, number of pods per plant and seed weight. Except for seed weight, no differential effects of progeny selection in monoculture or intercropping were observed for any characteristic.
