Notes: One of the points of interest in the study of random systems is the nature of the eigenstates, i.e., exponentially localized or extended, and the density of states. To identify the disorder-induced effects, we consider the one-dimensional s=1/2 xy models with random exchange, or random field. Using the transformation to spinless fermions, the problem is reduced to a nonlinear map, providing accurate numerical estimates for the integrated density of states and the exponential localization length. The results clearly reveal: (i) appearance of disorder-induced tails in the integrated density of states at the bottom and top of the spectrum, yielding to a characteristic field dependence of magnetization and susceptibility at zero temperature; and (ii) important differences between random-exchange and random-field models. In the random-exchange case, the middle of the band is found to be extended, while in the random-field case, corresponding to the standard Anderson model, all states are exponentially localized. This difference also affects the temperature dependence of zero-field specific heat and susceptibility as T→0.

Notes: Abstract We report on the quantum-mechanical displacement form factor in quasiperiodic and random heterostructures. A one-dimensional treatment is adopted to describe the longitudinal displacement along the growth axis. Elastic properties are assumed to be homogeneous, while the inhomogeneous mass density characterizes the heterostructure. In the low-frequency limit, the peak structure can be attributed to acoustic phonons, whereas for higher frequencies the quasiperiodic and random cases differ markedly. In the quasiperiodic case and constant momentum transfer, resonances separated by gaps occur and their number depends on the resolution in the frequency domain. The random case is dominated by an acoustic resonance becoming broader with increasing frequency.

Notes: Summary The Pressure Measurement Foil (PMF), or Prescale, developed by the Fuji company permits the determination of the contact surfaces and of the pressure pattern within the femoropatellar joint. We measured contact surfaces and pressure distribution between patella and femoral condyles at different degrees of knee joint flexion before and after a lateral release. At a external load of 1000N, only 12% of patellar surfaces established contact in extension, which was increased to 25% on flexion of 120°. Superimposition of all function-related contacts showed that contact was established with the entire patellar surface. With increasing degree of flexion the mean pressures across the pressure zones showed only minor variations, owing to the flexion-dependent enlargement of the contact surfaces. Lateral release does not influence articular mechanics; it was at least not possible to change the retropatellar pressure to any measurable extent by releasing the lateral patellar connection.

Notes: Summary In 24 kindergartens the relation between the presence of readily visible, man-made mineral-fiber products in the ceilings and the presence/frequency of symptoms or diseases and the correlations between complaints of symptoms or disease and the concentration of man-made mineral-fibres in the indoor environment was investigated. A combination of traditional epidemiological technique and a technical analysis of a number of indoor-air parameters did not support the hypothesis that the presence of readily visible man-made mineral-fiber products in the ceiling should be mainly responsible for the occurrence of symptoms and/or disease related to indoor exposure in kindergartens.

Notes: Abstract Waxmonoester fermentation at the expense of endogenous paramylon was followed in the dark in autotrophically grown Euglena gracilis. With reduced oxygen tension and decreasing O2-consumption rates the proportion of odd-numbered fatty acids and alcohols increased up to a molar ratio of nearly 1:1 under strictly anaerobic conditions. Labelled 14CO2, succinate and propionate were incorporated into odd-numbered fatty acids and alcohols 11 to 33 times faster than in even-numbered chains. The electron-flow inhibitor rotenone diminished waxester formation in total, but especially CO2 fixation and the synthesis of odd-numbered chains, without impeding anaerobic carbohydrate breakdown. These findings are indicative for propionyl-CoA as an intermediate in the synthesis of odd-numbered chains. Its probable synthesis in the methylmalonyl-CoA pathway is discussed with regard to energetics.

Notes: Abstract In order to investigate functional differences between fundus flavimaculatus and ophthalmoscopically similar diseases, we performed testing of spectral sensitivity, transient tritanopia, visual fields, fluorescein angiography, color vision, electrophysiological parameters, dark adaptation, cone flicker threshold during dark adaptation, and a thorough clinical investigation in five patients. Four had characteristic fundus flavimaculatus, while one patient turned out to have an atypical form. All five patients showed similar results in clinical investigations, electrophysiological data, and visual field tests. However psychophysical tests showed a number of differences in the single atypical patient. Although his ophthalmoscopic picture was not entirely typical of fundus flavimaculatus, only his psychophysical data could identify the patient as functionally distinct from the other four.

Notes: Abstract The effect of various concentrations of the dopamine antagonist fluphenazine on ocular field potentials, recorded under scotopic conditions from isolated, arterially perfused cat eyes, was studied. Responses from outer (isolated Pill-component of the electroretinogram, ERG), middle (b-wave), and inner (optic nerve response, ONR) retinal layers were separated. Neither the fast or slow Pill-amplitude nor the temporal characteristics of the response were influenced by any of the drug concentrations tested. In contrast, fluphenazine reversibly increased the rod b-wave amplitude over a large range of concentrations. Only very high drug concentrations led to an irreversible loss of the b-wave. In the ONR the initial transient on-response increased during drug injection, whereas the sustained on-response and off-response decreased. In summary, the dopamine antagonist fluphenazine affects mainly the signal processing of the rod pathway in the inner retinal layers, while responses from outer retinal layers are not influenced. On- and off-responses of the ONR are affected differently.

Notes: Abstract We investigate the thermodynamic properties of weakly coupled superconducting grains in a magnetic field. Starting from the mean field approximation, we treat the induced field and the nonlinearities self-consistently. Close to but slightly belowT c (H), the order parameter, the magnetization and the variance of the induced-field distribution. Recent experiments on high-T c materials are consistent with these predictions.
