    Notes: The photofragment kinetic energy spectrum of Ar+3 has been recorded in a crossed-beam apparatus at 532 nm; the only photofragment product observed is Ar+. For the purposes of analysis, a spectrum for the photofragmentation of Ar+2 was recorded under similar experimental conditions. In each case, the ions were prepared by the electron impact ionization of a neutral argon cluster beam. The Ar+3 spectrum consists of two quite distinct features, a high-energy component which closely resembles the result observed for Ar+2, and a second, low-energy feature, which is peculiar to Ar+3 alone. The two high-energy wings appear to arise from a very rapid dissociation process where approximately 70% of the excess energy appears as Ar+ kinetic energy. A computer simulation of this region of the spectrum gives an anisotropy parameter, β, of 1.1±0.2. The low-energy, component to the spectrum arises from a two-step dissociation process, in which a weakly bound atom carries away a relatively large fraction of the available excess energy to leave a quasibound dimer ion. The energetics associated with this latter process can be accounted for using a partitioning scheme proposed by Baer et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 76, 5917 (1982)]. A computer simulation of the low-energy component gives β(approximately-equal-to)0.0. A detailed discussion of the results in terms of electronic structure, photofragmentation dynamics, and allowed electronic transitions, concludes that Ar+3 takes the form of a stable dimer ion and a weakly bound atom, and that it is most probably nonlinear.

    Notes: Abstract The hifH gene from Klebsiella pneumoniae, which codes for the Fe protein component of nitrogenase, was used as a probe to detect nifH homologues in total cellular DNA from 13 obligate methane oxidizing bacteria. All but one of those strains that had previously been shown capable of fixing dinitrogen contained sequences homologous to nifH. DNAs from three of the six non-diazotrophic strains were also found to possess such homology.

    Notes: Abstract Methane monooxygenase (MMO) is the enzyme responsible for the conversion of methane to methanol in methanotrophic bacteria. In addition, this enzyme complex oxidizes a wide range of aliphatic and aromatic compounds in a number of potentially useful biotransformations. In this study, we have used biochemical data obtained from purification and characterization of the soluble MMO from Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath), to identify structural genes encoding this enzyme by oligonucleotide probing. The genes encoding the β and γ subunits of MMO were found to be chromosomally located and were linked in this organism. We report here on the analysis of a recombinant plasmid containing 12 kilobases of Methylococcus DNA and provide the first evidence for the localization and linkage of genes encoding the methane monooxygenase enzyme complex. DNA sequence analysis suggests that the primary structures of the β and γ subunit of MMO are completely novel and the complete sequence of these genes is presented.

    Notes: Abstract Closed analytical expressions are derived for some two-centre exchange integrals between Slater orbitals. Integrals involving 1s, 2s and 2pσ orbitals are considered with the restriction that the two orbitals have the same exponent. An expansion formula accurate for large values ofR is also derived.

    Notes: Large-scale fire experiments have been carried out in a special test rig to study the chemical nature of fire atmosphere using a ‘fingerprint’ sampling and analysis method. Four polymeric materials - wood, polypropylene, polymethyl methacrylate and polystyrene foam - were used separately as fuel, with both high and low ventilation. In addition to oxides of carbon the fingerprints yielded typically between twenty and forty different chemical compounds including several (e.g. aldehydes) which could contribute significantly to the irritancy of the fire gases. The change in nature of the fingerprint gases with the different ventilation conditions, different polymeric materials and with different stages of the same fire is discussed, together with the toxicological significance of the results.
