Notes: [Auszug] One week after operation each rat was placed for 4 h on a treadmill 55 cm in diameter, and was deprived of food, water and sleep in the resting state. The rat was continuously monitored during this time, and the drum was shaken to keep the animal awake whenever it ceased spontaneous movement. The ...

Notes: Abstract Cranial chordomas are uncommon, accounting for less than 1% of all intracranial neoplasms. Although they are presumed to arise from congenital notochordal remnants, it is rare for these tumors to present in childhood. Only 35 cases of cranial chordomas have been reported in children 16 years of age or younger. We report 2 additional cases of pediatric cranial chordomas. One occurred in a 4 month old infant and to our knowledge represents the earliest age of presentation yet reported. The second case documents the value of MR imaging in delineating the extent of the tumor and defining its relationship to adjacent structures.

Notes: Abstract Experiments on homogeneous initiation of pulsed avalanche discharges in typical XeCl laser mixtures show that the x-ray preionization pulse remains effective after a time delay of the order of 20 μs even at very high gas pressures (∼15 atm). Detailed kinetics analyses indicate that dissociative attachment of HCl is relatively slow during and after the preionization period so that the long effective delay time cannot be attributed to the storage effect of Cl− ions. Instead, the observed phenomenon can be attributed to the long survival time of the free electrons due to relatively slow diffusion and electron-ion recombination. Some problems arising from quantitative interpretation of the experimental results are also noted and discussed.

Notes: Abstract In infants, the site of the aortic arch is frequently inferred from the position of the intrathoracic trachea. We retrospectively reviewed the plain frontal chest radiographs of 72 patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease and right arotic arch documented by cardiac catheterization. In infants, the position of the trachea was variable: 47% had the trachea on the right, 33% had the trachea midline and in 7% the trachea was on the left. As the child grows, the aortic arch progressively indents the trachea, and the descending aorta is better visualized. Since the position of the trachea in infants with right aortic arch is variable, one must be cautious in inferring the site of the aortic arch by the position of the trachea.

Notes: Summary The first exonic and its flanking regions of a ras-related gene in cultured erythrophoroma cells and normal liver of goldfish (Carassius auratus) were sequenced and their sequences compared. The two samples demonstrated identical sequences for the Alu I fragment of 245 nucleotides, of which 70 nucleotides might correspond to the 5′-upstream segment and 64 to the first intervening sequence, indicating that the predicted exonic region encodes from the 1st to the 37th amino acids from the N-terminal of mammalian ras protein. The length of the predicted first exon of goldfish was the same as that of mammals. There was a 5 nucleotide difference in this exonic region (length 111 nucleotides) from another previously determined ras-related sequence of normal goldfish. This difference was much smaller than that between any two of the three mammalian ras genes. Enhanced expression of ras gene was observed in erythrophoroma cells, although it was uncertain which ras gene was responsible for generation of the observed RNA.

Notes: Abstract The dual simplex method for generalized upper bound (GUB) problems is presented. One of the major operations in the dual simplex method is to update the elements of therth row, wherer is the index for the leaving basic variable. Those updated elements are used for the ratio test to determine the entering basic variabble. A very simple formula for therth row update for the dual simplex method for a GUB problem is derived, which is similar to the formula for the standard linear program. This derivation is based on the change key operation, which is to exchange the key column and its counterpart in the nonkey section. The change key operation is possible because of a theorem that guarantees the existence of such a counterpart.
