    Notes: The reaction of O(3P)+H2, D2, and HD was studied by the flash photolysis-resonance fluorescence method. The rate constants kXY(T) were measured over the temperature ranges 297–471 K for XY=H2, 422–472 K for D2, and 422–473 K for HD. Above 400 K kH2 are in excellent agreement with earlier flow measurements, but below this temperature most of the flow data are systematically lower. A small deviation from the Arrhenius function was observed for kH2 at 297 K. Our measurements of kD2 are in excellent agreement with the results of Westenberg and deHaas and differ from those Clyne and Thrush. The measured values of kHD equal the arithmetic mean of kH2 and kD2 within experimental error. A detailed comparison is made between the present results and the CEQB calculations of Bowman, Wagner, Walch, and Dunning and the ICVT/LAG calculations of Garrett and Truhlar. Good overall agreement is obtained with both theories.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Da für das Auftreten der Brennfleckenkrankheit an Bohnen die Verwendung kranken Saatgutes die Hauptursache bildet, sollte geklärt werden, inwieweit die Samenschalen der verschiedenen Bohnensorten einen Einfluß auf den Befall der Samen mitC. lindemuthianum ausüben. 1. Infektionsversuche an reifen Bohnensamen ergeben bei weiß- und buntsamigen unterschiedliche Ergebnisse. Bohnensamen mit einer gefärbten Samenschale werden in der Regel nicht befallen. In wäßrigen Auszügen farbiger Samenschalen sind antifungal wirkende Stoffe enthalten. Die Entwicklung vonC. lindemuthianum auf Dekokten von Samenschalen buntsamiger Sorten ist im Vergleich zu weißsamigen eindeutig gehemmt. 2. Ein Nachweis dieser Hemmwirkung ist sowohl mit Hilfe der Wachstumsintensität als auch der Anzahl der gebildeten Sporen möglich. Dabei wird die Sporenbildung stärker als das Myzelwachstum beeinflußt. 3. Die fungistatisch wirkenden Substanzen sind bereits in reifenden, noch nicht gefärbten Samenschalen buntsamiger Bohnensorten enthalten. 4. Infektionsversuche an Bohnenhypokotylen zeigen, daß die Anfälligkeit der krautigen Pflanzenteile nicht mit der Anfälligkeit der Samen parallel geht. Auch die Hypokotyle buntsamiger Sorten sind zum Teil hochanfällig. 5. Es wird auf die Möglichkeit der züchterischen Nutzung der Barrierewirkung der farbigen Samenschalen von Buschbohnensorten hingewiesen.
    Notes: Summary The occurrence of bean anthracnosis is caused chiefly by the use of diseased seeds. It was, therefore, to be determined whether the seed coats of different bean varieties have an influence on resistance toColletotrichum lindemuthianum. 1. Infections of white and colored mature bean seeds give different experimental results. Generally, seeds with colored seed coats did not show any susceptibility. Decocts of colored seed coats contain antifungal substances which doubtlessly inhibit the development ofC. lindemuthianum on their decocts more than on those of white-seeded varieties. 2. This inhibition can be demonstrated not only by means of growth intensity studies, but also by the number of spores produced. The latter is inhibited more than is mycelial growth. 3. Fungistatic substances in the seed coats can be found in mature as well as in maturing seeds, at a time when the seed is not yet colored. 4. Infections of bean hypocotyls show that the susceptibility of herbaceous parts differs from seed susceptibility. Hypocotyls of some colored seed varieties are highly susceptible. 5. The possible usefulness of the inhibitory effect of colored seed coats in breeding of bean varieties is pointed out.

    Notes: Abstract Subsurface agricultural drainage waters from western San Joaquin Valley, California, were found to contain elevated concentrations of the element selenium in the form of selenate. In 1978, these drainage waters began to replace previous input to Kesterson Reservoir, a pond system within Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge; this substitution was completed by 1982. In the 1983 nesting season, unusual rates of deformity and death in embryos and hatchlings of wild aquatic birds (up to 64% of eared grebe and American coot nests) occurred at the refuge and were attributed to selenium toxicosis. Features necessary for contamination to have taken place included geologic setting, climate, soil type, availability of imported irrigation water, type of irrigation, and the unique chemical properties of selenium. The mechanisms of biogeochemical cycling raise questions about other ecosystems and human exposure.

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Mass transfer for the system naphthalin/air and heat transfer with air were measured for the following geometries: a plate with laminar and turbulent boundary-layer, a rectangular channel with fully developed turbulent velocity distribution in the thermal entrance region, a pipe of circular cross-section, an annular both in fully developed turbulent flow. For the plate, pipe and annular, the results of the two measuring methods agree very well and confirm the well known laws of heat transfer.Elser equation for the thermal entrance region is adapted to the results. The exponent of the Prandtl and Schmidt numbers varies in the range of 0,7〈(Pr;Sc)〈2,5 between the values 0,33 and 0,67 depending on the state of flow.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Stoffübertragung für das System Naphthalin/Luft und Wärmeübertragung an Luft werden an der Platte mit laminarer und turbulenter Grenzschicht, in einem Rechteckkanal im Bereich des thermischen Analufs bei hydraulisch ausgebildeter turbulenter Strömung und am Kreisrohr bzw. Ringspalt bei vollausgebildeter Strömung gemessen. Die bekannten Gesetze bei Wärmeübertragung für Platte, Kreisrohr und Ringspalt in der Schreibweise für Stoffübertragung werden bestätigt. Die Gleichung vonElser für den thermischen Analufvorgang wird den Versuchsergebnissen angepaßt. Der Exponent der Prandtl- bzw. Schmidt-Zahl nimmt im Bereich 0,7〈(Pr;Sc)〈2,5 je nach Strömungsform Werte zwischen 0,33 und 0,67 an.

    Notes: Abstract From about 6×106 stoppingK −-meson reactions in the Saclay 80 cm hydrogen bubble chamber 70Σ −→Λe−¯ν and 11Σ+→Λe+ν decays have been identified. The ratio of the vector to axial vector coupling constant has been determined,f 1/g 1=−0.22±0.28, consistent with the predictionf 1=0 of the CVC-theory. The branching ratios for the two decay modes are,Γ(Σ −→Λe−ν)/Γ(Σ−→ all modes)=(0.69±0.12). 10−4,Γ(Σ+→Λe+ν)/Γ(Σ+→ all modes)=(0.29±0.10). 10−4. The ratio, Γ(Σ+→Λe+)/Γ(Σ−→Λe−v)=0.69±0.18, agrees with the phase space ratio, 0.61, therefore a theory that includes no second class currents is consistent with the data.

    Notes: Abstract In a sample of 106 Σ + hyperons we have searched for the decaysσ +→ ne+ ν andσ +→nμ + ν, which would violate theΔQ=ΔS rule. NoΣ +→ne+ ν decay was found, whereas 313σ −→ne− ν decays were identified in the same film. With 90% confidence we obtain $$\frac{{\Gamma (\sum ^ + \to ne^ + v)}}{{\Gamma (\sum ^ - \to ne^ - \bar v)}} \leqq 3.10^{ - 2} .$$ Having found two candidates for the decayσ +→nμ + ν and 104Σ −→nμ − ν events we obtain for the muonic mode $$\frac{{\Gamma (\sum ^ + \to ne^ + v)}}{{\Gamma (\sum ^ - \to ne^ - \bar v)}} \leqq 3.10^{ - 2} .$$ The probability that theμ +-events are simulated byσ +→nπ + γ with subsequent undetectedπ +→μ + ν decay is less than 4%.

    Notes: Abstract Approximately 106 Σ± decays of the stopping K− film (80 cm Saclay HBC) have been measured with the Heidelberg KONRAD-system1. This system is capable of detecting about 75% of the Σ−→ ne−¯v decays. In addition, about 106 pictures have been scanned for Σ± leptonic decays with secondary particle momenta below 80 MeV/c. This covers about 15% of the lepton spectrum. The data yield the following branching ratios: (1) $$\frac{{\Gamma \left( {\sum ^ - \to ne^ - \bar v} \right)}}{{\Gamma \left( {\sum ^ - \to \pi ^ - n} \right)}} = \left( {1.02 \pm 0.08} \right) \times 10^{ - 3} ,$$ (2) $$\frac{{\Gamma \left( {\sum ^ - \to n\mu ^ - \bar v} \right)}}{{\Gamma \left( {\sum ^ - \to \pi ^ - n} \right)}} = \left( {0.43 \pm 0.06} \right) \times 10^{ - 3} .$$ Since only a part of the lepton spectra is detected, the branching ratios depend slightly on the form of the transition matrix elements. The values quoted above were derived taking the Cabibbo solution2 g1/f1=−0.24 and the CVC prediction f2/f1=−1.143. The branching ratios are in good agreement withμ, e universality.
