Notes: The association of reading disability with perceptuomotor problems has had a chequered history. This study examines the relationship between a new test of ocular dominance and reading and spelling ability in a group of 323 schoolchildren. Similar rates for unfixed ocular dominance were found for poor readers as in comparable studies. The rates of unstable ocular dominance did not differ between those with reading and spelling difficulties and controls. These findings in a ‘blind’ study question the role of this test of eye dominance as a diagnosis of ‘dyslexia’.

Description / Table of Contents: Übersicht Für die Grundgleichungen einer Theorie 12.
Notes: Summary Solutions of a biharmonic equation together with four Helmholtz equations governing a twelfthorder thick plate theory in cylindrical coordinates are derived in a form suitable for finding corrections to previous lower-order thick plate results. As an example, for an infinite plate with a circular hole subjected to bending moments at two parallel outside edges, detailed comparisons of values of a stress couple concentration factor and a stress concentration factor are made between the present theory and previous results due to Alblas, Reissner, and Cheng.

Notes: Summary In the present work for circular cylindrical shells, three-dimensional elasticity equations are solved by assuming Taylor series expansions, in the radial direction, for the stresses and displacements. Depending upon the number of terms retained in the expansion, different order shell theories are derived. Classical theories (referred to as eighth-order), the shear deformation-transverse normal stress theories (referred to as tenth-order), and higher order theories (referred to as twelfth-order) are derived. In each case, by carrying out the symbolic algebra using the digital computer, partial differential equations are derived. The procedure was carried out in detail for the case of a circular cylindrical shell with no loading on the interior surface and a given pressure distribution on the exterior surface. Then, numerical comparisons are made between the current theories and various shell theories, as well as the exact (three-dimensional) theory. Thus, using this method with its associated computer programs, one can realize a spectrum of approximate shell theories ranging from the classical thin shell, through all current thick shell theories, and approaching the three-dimensional elastic theories.

Notes: Abstract To investigate the potential importance of prostaglandins and thromboxane in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the effects of a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (piroxicam) and a thromboxane synthetase inhibitor (dazmegrel) were examined on survival, proteinuria, food consumption, body weight, and peripheral lymphocyte subset distribution in the NZB/W model of autoimmune lupus disease. The effect of an immunosuppressant (cyclophosphamide) known to be effective in the treatment of murine lupus on these parameters was also examined. Cyclophosphamide at 25 mg/kg ip weekly prolonged survival, inhibited proteinuria and prevented the characteristic decline in peripheral T cells and the relative increase in B cells seen in NZB/W lupus disease while having no apparent effect on body weight or food consumption. Neither dazmegrel at 50 or 200 mg/kg/day in the diet nor piroxicam at 2 mg/kg/day in the diet had any significant effects on these parameters.

Notes: Summary A mechanism for growth stress generation is studied which involves a contractive strain in the microfibril direction and swelling strain in the transverse direction in the developing wall of wood cells. A cylindrically anisotropic elastic model is used to calculate the accumulation of residual stresses in the S2 wall as it is formed. An explicit relation between the shrinkage/swelling strains in the growth increment of the cell wall and the resulting axial and circumferential stresses induced in the cell is derived. For gymnosperm cells the transition from tensile stress in normal wood cells to compressive stress in compression wood cells is found with increasing microfibril angle.

Notes: Summary A plane strain pure bending elastic model is used to predict stress states in a cylindrically orthotropic cylinder due to asymmetric strain distributions continously induced at the periphery. A general solution for the stress states related to each component of the strain distribution expanded in a Fourier series is given. Details of solutions for eleven representative tree species are given. Also the change of curvature of a stem caused by a measured peripheral strain distribution is computed for a given period of growth.
