    Notes: Abstract An electrochemical analysis of surface-controlled metal oxidation is presented. The reduction of molecular oxygen adsorbed on the oxide surface is broken into a number of steps. The possible rate-determining steps are analyzed in turn and the resultant rate equations derived. It is predicted that an Nth-root growth law will occur with N varying continuously over a limited range. A similar result for the pressure dependence of the oxidation rate is obtained.

    Notes: Abstract A general electrochemical theory for the oxidation of metals is presented. The oxidizing metal is viewed as a self-driving electrochemical cell in which the oxide acts as both ionic and electronic conductor. The irreversibility of each of the charge-transfer steps in the reaction mechanism is expressed in terms of an overpotential, the sum of these being equal to the Gibbs free-energy change accompanying the reaction. From this equality, it is possible to calculate the reaction rate as a function of the change in free energy and of such system parameters as oxide conductivity. It is shown that the Wagner theory and the Mott-Cabrera theory can be derived as special cases of the general electrochemical theory. The common basis for the Wagner theory and the Hoar-Price theory of parabolic oxidation is also demonstrated.

    Notes: Abstract The most effective lure for maleAmorbia cuneana (Walsingham) in Orange, Ventura, and Riverside counties of California was previously found to be a 1∶1 ratio of (E,E)-10,12- and (E,Z)-10,12-tetradecadien-1-ol acetates. In subsequent field tests in San Diego and Santa Barbara counties, this lure was ineffective. Analysis of sex pheromone glands (SPG) of femaleA. cuneana from these two counties showed theEE:EZ ratio to be about 1∶9 and synthetic lures of this composition were highly attractive in these areas. Analysis of the SPG of a number of females from both areas showed that there were three population types: two in the low ratio areas possessed 37 and 58%EZ, and the third in the high ratio areas possessed 89%EZ.
