The use of municipal water was reduced by 53 percent to 53 gallons per capita per day (gpcd) and total water use at the home was reduced by 33 percent to 74 gpcd.

    Notes: : An index of residential water efficiency - a “W-Index” - can serve as a measure of effectiveness of water conservation features in the home. The index provides a calculated numerical value for each dwelling unit, derived from the number and kind of water-saving features present, including indoor and outdoor water savers and water harvesting or recycling systems.A W-Index worksheet, devised for on-site evaluation of single-family residences in the Tucson, Arizona, region shows that a nonconserving residence with all the water-using features would use 151,000 gallons per year or 148 gallons per capita per day (gpcpd), while the fully conserving model would use 35,300 gallons per year or 35 gpcpd and with water harvesting and graywater recycling systems would have a maximum W-Index of W-160. A Tucson water conservation demonstration home, Casa del Agua, received a rating of W-139, and field tests of about 30 homes in new Tucson subdivisions show values ranging from W-75 to W-100, indicating the incorporation of some water conservation in current new models.By adjustment of some climatic or water-use parameters, the W-Index format can be applied to various types of dwelling units or to other urban areas. The W-Index can be used by individual homeowners or builders to evaluate water efficiency of residential units, or by water providers or water management agencies as a device for promoting and achieving water conservation goals.

    Notes: : Although the effects of vegetation management on streamflow have been studied in many locations, the effects of augmented streamflow on downstream water users have not been carefully analyzed. This study examines the routing of streamflow increases that could be produced in the Verde River Basin of Arizona. Reservoir management and water routing to users in the Salt River Valley around Phoenix were carefully modeled. Simulation of water routing with and without vegetation modification indicates that, under current institutional conditions, less than one-half of the streamflow increase would reach consumptive users as surface water. Most of the remainder would accumulate in storage until a year of unusually heavy runoff, when it would add to reservoir spills. Under alternative scenarios, from 39 to 58 percent of the streamflow increase was delivered to consumptive users.

    Notes: Light absorption by a solid material and conversion of part, or all, of the optical energy into heat due to nonradiative deexcitation processes within the solid can give rise to an electrical signal in a pyroelectric thin film in contact with the sample. This effect forms the basis of a new spectroscopic technique for the study of condensed phase matter. A one-dimensional theory is presented, which describes the dependence of the pyroelectric signal on the optical, thermal, and geometric parameters of the solid/pyroelectric system. Specifically, the theory examines the conditions under which the photopyroelectric signal exhibits a linear dependence on the optical absorption coefficient of the solid. Thus a theoretical basis for the technique of photopyroelectric spectroscopy is established. Qualitative comparisons between predictions of the theory and preliminary experimental observations are used to test the applicability of the theory to experimental configurations of practical interest.

    Notes: Competition between wild oat (Avena fatua L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was studied in two experiments; a replacement series model and a technique for separation of root and shoot systems. Wild oat and wheat in association resulted in a relative yield total very close to unity showing that the two species were‘crowding for the same space’(or competing for the same resources) and were‘mutually exclusive'. Wild oat was more competitive than wheat, as shown by its aggressivity relative to wheat, relative yields, shoot dry weights and other plant attributes. The greater competitive ability of wild oat was predominantly due to its greater root competitive ability, while the two species had similar shoot competitive ability. Root competition had a much greater effect on the relative performance of the two species than did shoot competition. The effects of root and shoot competition were additive.

    Notes: The influence of time of emergence of wild oat (Avena fatua L.) on its competition with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was studied, using boxes that allowed separation of root and shoot competition. The relative yield total for mixtures of wild oat and wheat, grown under different forms of competition and with different wild oat sowing times, was very close to unity, indicating that the two species competed fully for limiting resources. Wild oat was more competitive than wheat when the two species were sown simultaneously, due largely to its greater root competitive ability; the two species had similar shoot competitive abilities. When wild oat was sown 3 or 6 weeks later than wheat, wheat was more competitive than wild oat and the production of wild oat panicles was prevented. This was mainly the result of greater root competitive ability of the wheat, although shoot competitive ability was also greater. The effects of root and shoot competition were additive. It is concluded that in order to prevent the return of wild oat seeds to the soil, and hence obtain long-term benefit, it is necessary to control the wild oat seedlings emerging within the first 3 weeks after drilling a wheat crop.
