Notes: Abstract New computation methods for removing saccades in analysis of smooth pursuit eye movement characteristics were developed. They have removed saccades more completely than previous methods, and were very effective especially for noisy data recorded by the EOG method. The fully developed method was applicable to eye movement data in tracking of pseudo-random target movement as well as deterministic target movement. Furthermore, the methods were also useful for extracting the number and magnitudes of saccades more precisely.

Notes: Abstract Arc-shaped turbulence promoters along the circular tube inside surface which have capability of cleaning down tube fouling by sponge balls are proposed for enhancing the heat transfer performance. First, flow characteristics and heat transfer performance of air flow in a rectangular channel for several promoters were investigated. The arc-shaped promoter was found to have the lowest pressure loss. Secondly, turbulence structures of water flow by the arc-shaped promoters in a circular tube were measured by use of a newly developed two-color LDV. The local heat transfer coefficient was shown to be well correlated to the Reynolds stress and the existence of the optimum height of the promoter as elucidated. Lastly, performances of thermoelectric power generation by using cascade arc-shaped promoters for OTEC were measured and the optimum condition was investigated.

Notes: Summary Phototactic responses in a giant amoeboid cell ofPhysarum plasmodium were studied both by analyzing intracellular ATP content and by applying image processing for recording oscillatory changes in thickness with use of a microcomputer. The ATP content fluctuated and deviated from the initial level upon exposure to light with varying wavelength from 400 to 600 nm. The maximum decrease in the integrated value $$\int\limits_{\text{O}}^{\text{T}} {{\text{ATP}}}$$ dt with T=9 minutes occurred at the wavelength 450 nm. The ATP in a migrating plasmodium distributed twice as high in the front as in the rear. This polar pattern became unstable, and a new wavy pattern appeared by stimulating a local frontal part with blue light. In a concentrically extending plasmodium, peripheral and inside regions oscillated in opposite phase to each other. When part of this organism was exposed to light, stimulated and unslimulated regions began to oscillate in opposite phase, and phase waves propagated inward the stimulated region. And the protoplasm there became thinner, the strongest avoidance reaction occurring to 450 nm light as in ATP response. Phototactic behavior inPhysarum is discussed in terms of bifurcation in spatio-temporal organization appearing in a self-organizing system.

Notes: Summary ThePhysarum plasmodium shows rhythmic contractile activities with a period of a few min. Phases of the oscillation in the plasmodium migrating unindirectionally agreed sideways throughout at the frontal part. So, time course of an intracellular chemical component was determined by analyzing small pieces cut off successively from the frontal part of the large plasmodium. Intracellular NAD(P)H concentration oscillated with the same period as the rhythmic contraction but with a different phase advancing about 1/3 of the period. UV irradiation suppressed the rhythmic contraction without affecting the rhythmic variation of NAD(P)H. Thus, the NAD(P)H oscillator works independently of the rhythmic contractile system, but seems entraining with each other.

Notes: Abstract Recently commercial equipment using sedimentation field flow fractionation (SFFF) has become available for analysis of particulate materials in the sub-micron range. This paper describes the DuPont instrument and discusses its performance. A particular study is described on the comparison of the SFFF technique with that of quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS). The paper concludes that the instrument is capable of measuring particle size distributions with high resolution and precision, provided that no particles above the upper size limit — about 1 μm — are present.

Notes: Abstract The surface and the interfacial tensions of mutually immiscible liquid systems were experimentally studied. The measured systems are n-pentane-water and R 113-water, which are proposed as heat transfer fluids for a direct-contact heat exchanger to be used for geothermal and waste heat recovery plants. The experimental apparatus was constructed based on the principle of the pendant drop method. Measurements were performed in the temperature range from 20 to 150°C. Based on the correlation of the surface and the interfacial tensions, the temperature dependences of the spreading coefficient, the film pressure, and the work of adhesion in each system were calculated.
